Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb from Pulse is the obvious choice, but I'll always choose Daryl Stuermer's guitar solo from Phil Collins live version of Inside Out. So on point, technically difficult and fits the track especially with Chester on the drums.

I could make a list about a million long and it would be different tomorrow!

A few of my favourites as a guitar player are:

Unchained - Van Halen.

Bleed & Scream - Eclipse.

Escape - Journey.

Little Guitars - Van Halen.

Angels Don't Kill - Children Of Bodom.

Bad Penny - Rory Gallagher.

Little Wing - Jimi Hendrix (Stevie Ray Vaughan's version was also amazing).

Decadence Dance - Extreme.

I'll stop there....

So many technically brilliant solos to choose from. Jimmy Page, Richie Blackmore, Gary Moore, Scott Gorham, Angus Young, Steve Howe, David Gilmour. But the one that really sets me going it Michael Schenker's solo in UFO's Only You Can Rock Me. Melodic and slightly simplistic but it has that certain something about it. Abso-fucking-lutely love it!

I actually love you now ..

I’m a bit disappointed by their new music since he rejoined the band but all the stuff before he left was amazing.

Totally agree .. I'm literally on a YouTube RHCP hole right now ..

I was supposed to go see them a few weeks ago but couldn’t make it… the gig was cancelled on the day so I guess I was lucky."

Also if you haven’t watched it already search for Under the Bridge Amsterdam 1991. It’s just Anthony Kiedis and John Frusciante on a boat with a guitar and it’s amazing.

Oh wow is that on YouTube??

Yeah I’ve just watched it again. It’s so raw but great at the same time.

Do you have the link please

Rocket Queen. Seriously good riff. Especially with Duff's bass. And Steven's drum groove.

I was at the GnR gig at the Tottenham stadium and when Rocket Queen started, the guy in front asked 'whats this song?'

Got to say Smoke On The Water as its inspired so many to go on to have amazing careers.

PS - People are free to choose whatever as theirs of course but - at the risk of sounding pedantic - many are confusing guitar 'riff' with guitar 'solo' but hey its no biggie.

I don't think that people who can't distinguish between a guitar riff and a guitar solo should be allowed to vote

Judging by the number of times you hear them played by beginners in guitar shops the ones that have entrenched themselves in the public psyche have to be...

or maybe it's just that they're easy to play

Any Bonn Scott era AC/DC

Roadhouse blues - Doors, but I think Status Quo’s version is better and pretty much all Quos hits are full of great riffs!

La Grange - ZZ Top

You really got me- Kinks

David Watts - The Jam

Ace of Spades - Motörhead

In fact probably any 12 bar blues based music is pretty much the basis for most great guitar riffs

I reckon they can be

Lemmy used to play his bass as if it was a 4 string rhythm guitar.

Royal Bloods Mike Kerr plays all the guitar parts on a bass - blown away the first time I saw them live took me a while to realise he was doing bass, rhythm and lead all on his bass; fantastic live and amazing how much sound they get from him on bass and a drum set accompanying

For me, a guitar riff can only be played on a guitar... there's a big difference between a bass line and a riff... I get that there's a bit of a crossover with a few artists where the bass is playing effects laden chords outside of the usual bass window, but that's not what "The Chain, Seven Nation Army, etc" listed earlier are.

I think we need a Best Bassline thread.

I get where your coming from as the examples given using a bass are the exception to the rule, and we all know guitarists like to think the bass is played by those who can’t master six strings

Seven Nation army wasn’t played on a bass it was a guitar tuned to open A : but the song is very, very easy to play on the bass as you can play it just sliding up and down the E string.

If no one else does a best bass line I’ll pop one up in a bit
