Cornish Seagull Killed

A Cornish seagull was kicked to death after a child's ice cream was snatched by the hungry seagull. An adult then kicked the seagull senseless. It was taken to a rescue centre and died.

What's going on here guys?

Technically to be murder it needs to be a human perpetrator and victim plus it needs to be premeditated. Which this fails on all counts.

Maybe gullslaughter?

Personally I'm not convinced there's any moral difference between this and squashing a mosquito, setting a mouse trap or indeed eating a KFC. Of course, moral reasoning is almost never logical and moral reactions never are so no doubt many will disagree.

Personally I'm not convinced there's any moral difference between this and squashing a mosquito, setting a mouse trap or indeed eating a KFC. Of course, moral reasoning is almost never logical and moral reactions never are so no doubt many will disagree.

A seagull stole my tray of fish & chips right out my hands as I walked out a chippy in Scarborough in 2015. Then they all flew down trying to eat my tea off the floor. I'm still raging

I wonder how he treats his family if he gets that angry over an ice cream . Round here you daren't eat outside without being on the look out for gulls all the time. They stalk you if you're sitting outside a cafe and I've had my lunch taken.

Where I grew up in North Devon, gulls were culled every now and again. I’m not sure that helps much.

I can understand the emotional reaction the parent had, be he should have had more control, seeing what he did could have been just as traumatising for the child

Some people visiting the seaside have little or no awareness of the hazards it's one reason so many get in difficulties on the water.

I think kicking a seagull to death in front of your child indicates a huge anger management problem personally. I honestly don't think that him being concerned for his child is any excuse at all, witnessing his father killing a defenceless bird probably did more harm than having his 99 nicked.

I'm amazed that the gull didn't fly off when the first kick was aimed. I hope it didn't have avian flu

I wasn't excusing nor condoning the father's behaviour, not in the least. I was saying that it is a shock seeing a big bird swooping down on a small child and that the birds dare to do it. People don't react by attacking the bird more than to get it off the child, not go on to chase down and kick the bird. I am, however, saying that people need to be made aware that the gulls may swoop down to snatch their belongings, especially from a child's hands, as I've seen myself.

Generally speaking I don’t condone violence to animals especially pets or domesticated.

However I’ll always side with a human over an animal, especially a wild one. Seagulls are not some fluffy creatures- they can be huge, big enough to take small dogs, have very sharp dangerous beaks and yes people should be aware of their dangers so one of these flying rats getting killed by a father possibly protecting his child?

We have them nesting at work and they try to kill us and poo on us every time we go outside, which unfortunately is often.

I appreciate they are protecting their young, however they are a pain, and have not yet noticed that not one of us has been on their sodding roof or anywhere near it for that matter.

Seagulls must be thick as well as nasty.

I would have happily killed and eat them, but, having googled this, well, they don't make for good eating, so best leave them be. Lol

It’s a seagull? Maybe it’s because I lived near the Canadian border in the Wilderness for a summer where you are absolutely at risk from bigger, faster, stronger much more violent killing machines like Cougars that you re assess your risks from animals. Even mice, yes little mice carry nasty viruses Hanta.

In the UK we as a general population are insulated from such risks so sorry if I couldn’t care less that a bird got wrecked. Like I said it wasn’t done for fun, but it’s no exaggeration to say it could’ve taken her eye out.

There was a thread on here about slugs, a lot of comments pouring salt on them and drowning them in beer. No difference really although kicking a seagull to death is a little more brutal.

Wouldn’t of been able to stand by and watch this happen it’s awful behaviour and a shit example to his children.

Down here in bognor / pagham these vermin birds can get very aggressive and territorial . I got one attack me yesterday at beach while I was sunbathing. Pesky thing seemed to want to peck or go for my feet for some reason. . I whacked it with my towel to get it to fuck off in end .

Pretty big birds some of them strutting about.

Is it me or is this a recent thing with seagulls.

A couple of years ago my child and friends children all lost their ice creams due to being attacked by seagulls. I don't remember this a few years before.

Its stopped us buying or eating any food at the beach, my children wouldn't want anything now so multiply that with other children affected. I would have thought that councillors of coastal areas would see this as a risk. I know in London we used to have a hawk flying around in the area in the early morning and evening to get rid of pigeons and gulls. They do something different now but it does seem to work.

Kicked to death sounds brutal....

Was it 1 kick to protect the child (which ended its life) or repeatedly kicked to death for stealing an ice cream

Seagulls are a flaming nuisance, they wake you up at 4 am, nest on your roof then attack you if you leave your house, ruin the paintwork on your car...but kick one to death? Nah that's just wrong

How do you know it was Cornish? It could have been on holiday.

This is my thought. I go sea fishing . Yes live inland. Do posters on here know size of a sea gull ? They close up are not small. If a sea gull . ?Then can be approx about 19 inches high and have a wingspan of about 30 inches plus . Plus on feet have ‘talons ‘? Plus beaks which possibly do injury to a child or adult . If as I have described . Then an injury to a child had occurred ? . What would be the conversation , people wanting to do ?

I was at the beach with two of my daughters a little while ago. They were being bothered by seagulls as they tried to eat doughnuts, we were beating a hasty retreat for cover, when one swooped down behind the youngest making a beeline for her food. Without really thinking, just a split second reaction, I stuck out my arm and with the back of my hand sort of swatted it away. The seagull sat on the ground momentarily, had a bit of a hissy fit and flew away. It has turned into a running joke about dad slapping rowdy seagulls. Had I decided to kick the seagull to death while it was sat on the floor regaining composure and some dignity, that amusing little episode would have taken a much darker turn and probably traumatised the girls. Not the sort of thing you want children to see or learn is an acceptable behaviour. Whatever you think of seagulls, spare a thought for the child.

The human race has made a rod for its own back here leaving food around and actively feeding them things they would not naturally consume, mind you it does not appear to have harmed them. One flopped down in a car park in Seaton Devon some years ago obviously injured and looked like it was in its death throes so being of farming stock I thought best thing to do would be to euthanise it quickly so I get a sledge hammer handle out of my van to administer the treatment, kin hell I didn't get a chance to do the job nearly got lynched had to get out of there fast lol

Tom is well skilled in the martial arts and self defence.

His club teaches ways to stave off animal attacks by anything from a wild bear to a seagull. When a seagull opens its wings to look big and try to intimidate it leaves itself very vulnerable to a blow to it's chest. Tom cannot reveal his techniques in an open forum like this but increasingly he is seeing clubs start teaching ways to defend against dog and bird attacks

The seagull problem has grown directly because of the demise of our fishing industry. They had evolved to follow our trawlers and eat scraps of gutted fish. Now that the EU is sabotaging our fish exports there are few trawlers left.

This has decimated the seagull population forcing them inland. From the sky the saegull sees a child with an ice-cream or an adult with a tray of chips and probably mistakes them for little morsels of fish. This is learned behaviour. Tom watches these buggers and the French fishermen have a lot to answer for

Not sure evolution works like that Tom and certainly not that fast. It's also a bit far fetched to suggest that a gull struggles to tell the difference between fish scraps floating in the sea behind a trawler and a tray of chips held by a tourist

Gulls are intelligent and inquisitive and will quickly learn to take advantage of any new food source, whether that's a trawler,tourists eating chips or a landfill. Her ladyship and I stopped to eat our lunch in the mountains of North Wales a few weeks back, were quickly spotted by a herring gull that then came and flew ever closer before landing nearby in the hope of getting scraps. I wonder it it was me or her ladyship that looked like a fishing trawler?

Savaloy has been eaten in this country since at least Victorian times. Nothing to do with the EU.

They live inland as well I feed them daily out front of me! They wait on the roof for me to get in from work bless them! X"

Recently on our local news a gull expert warned people about feeding them as it encourages them to swoop down and then steal food from others. It is people feeding them that causes the problem in the first place....just so you know.

Recently on our local news a gull expert warned people about feeding them as it encourages them to swoop down and then steal food from others. It is people feeding them that causes the problem in the first place....just so you know. "

Similar happened in St Ives 20 years ago also, probably the same again.

Think the guy got time for it. Came running out Sloop Inn and kicked one halfway across the harbour.

Council need to do something they've promised for years. If you've not been, they are very nasty and aggressive bastads in St Ives.

I've seen kids hurt by them. From Darwin's theory, the seagull's genetics has now been removed from the pool.

In living a coastal city our city centre is full of them. Nasty lil buggers that now are becoming more brazen in there actions swooping down and attacking people and pets etc. I think the best ways of dealing with them is:

!. Using a predatory bird (Example a Eagle or Falcon) to chase them off keeping town centres and places where public gather free of them.

2. Cull them to keep the numbers to a manageable level.

Interesting moral reaction. You guys are totally entitled to your opinion but I find sanctioning child abuse as punishment for a parents actions a little bit strange.

Then again, I find wanting to kick a person in revenge for a seagull a bit strange. I'm hoping you've never used a mouse trap, slapped at a biting insect or poured boiling water in an ants nest? You know in case someone pins your kids on the front lawn and assaults them...

They do have one good purpose. Alarm call, chuck bread on the noisy caravan next door's roof, all wet n soggy. When morning comes, the frenzy begins. Pecking and skidding on the roof and the fighting..

Then, they fly inland during winter, sit on sewage works eating shit, scavenge on land fills then head to reservoirs to sleep contaminating them with Salmonella, E Coli and anything else that sticks to them.

Next time you smell strong chlorine in you tap water, now you know!!

Fresh reports that this injured seagull was taken to a place called the Mousehole Bird Rescue centre and the seagull was a Herring Seagull. Presumably its main diet is herring which is an oily fish thought to have healthy properties if part of a balanced diet. It is also known to be an oily fish which is healthy for the heart

They don't land in my back garden as they need a run bit like a plane to take off which would not b possible in mine but out the front of me there is a small green where I feed them my daughter who lives home moans at me as they shit on her car! "Kicking a seagull to death. Honestly people, how many times do you think this grown ( startled, protective) father had to kick an animal 95% smaller than him with hollow bones before it died. I wager just once, but he may he stamped on it after just to make sure. As I do with wasps. Or do you think he grabbed it by it’s throat and did a scene like something out of goodfellas saying “You think I’m funny huh, you think I’m a joke”. Sensationalism news making a protective and startled father’s instant reaction out to be psychopathic and dangerous. And now some on here are worried how he treats his family. Laughable, I may be wrong but I’m more impressed he connected with the disease carrying, fesses dropping, ecosystem destroying pests. All those who feel bad set up a sanctuary in your gardens or towns, see how many people thank you ????

And yet somehow I don’t think you have ever had a flock of seagulls living in your garden. If you did would love to be fly on the wall for any meets you arrange at your house

They don't land in my back garden as they need a run bit like a plane to take off which would not b possible in mine but out the front of me there is a small green where I feed them my daughter who lives home moans at me as they shit on her car! I say what's more important your car having shit on or seagulls eating? X
