We wintered seven cows plus calves indoors and only needed to fill their water barrel twice a day so the bathtub part isn’t quite right I’m afraid x | |||

Farmers are now experimenting and cows being bred naturally to enhance the longevity of lactation. Something that has been done in places since the 70s. So for longer than 500 days post birth. Obviously this is governed by economics and like all mammals lactation peaks in the first third, but drying a cow off early. Is not good for its health so the vast majority are dried off at 305 to 400 days then a dry period before AI or running with the bull. Longer costs lots more money because of reduced yield over time and that cost needs to be born by the milk price which it isn't really. So same old story... More Welfare means more expensive food and I for one am very definitely a supporter of that. Supermarkets need to charge and pay more and it can be done. Simples. | |||
