Discuss.....

I was recently told by my gp, there is some evidence that fermented foods help the gut health and that in turn is good for all kinds of ailments...

Anyone got any experiences or thoughts on the subject?

I for quite into it a few years ago. Made my own kombucha, kefir, sourdough, sauerkraut etc cant say I noticed much difference but then I wasn't tracking anything.

Might start again but wait till it's cooler as things ferment very quickly in the hot weather

Fermented foods also help with serotonin production so anyone feeling of a low mood would benefit from increasing their intake of fermented foods.

I've heard the same thing about Kefir, shame it's so disgusting.

You can get really nice plain and flavoured kefir yogurts in all the supermarkets.

Where do you purchase kombucha? I've seen kombucha tea but guessing that's really watered down? I've seen kefir in most supermarkets so going to give that a go

Really? I'll have to check that out, I've only tried it once and it was just foul. Maybe it's time for another go

Sadly most commonly found sourdough in the UK is rubbish and not actual sourdough. Absurd to see things calling itself sourdough when it has more than 3 ingredients

It's an acquired taste for sure but you get used to it. You can second ferment it with fruit as well which makes it more palatable

Kombucha is made with tea so it's the same thing. You can get it in most supermarkets now.

Ask your gp to eat Hakarl in front of you so you know he’s not cheating and then get him to tell you how good it is

Well... I found the kefir and actually it's very easy to drink... Just like a drinking yoghurt so no great drama. Only thing was.. A bit like popeye and the hulk... I took a couple of sips and suddenly my biceps were massive... And my hair grew back

Back in this again for me lol just made my first batch of hot honey...need to wait a couple of weeks for it go ferment.

Going to start a sourdough starter again and reinvigorate my kefir grains as they've been a bit neglected in the fridge for a while

I believe this too. Greek yoghurt is good it has less lactose

I want to try this. I have to avoid lactose and certain vegetables so I've been toying with the idea of brining my own veg.

Unfortunately, I have an intolerance to fermentable foods.

Vinegar is fermented too - so pickles count, and some salad dressings.

There's a lot of interesting new research going on in the gut health area, it's definitely something to pay attention to as we're learning a lot about how important it is

Unconvinced by the notion of eating fermented foods for health. Dietary advice seems to have been based on guesswork and wishful thinking since the beginning of time.

Fermented foods often taste bloody delicious though. Sadly my experience runs more to pickled cucumbers, beer & sourdough than to regular dining at Noma in Copenhagen - but I believe the latter is partly responsible for some of the (culinary) fashion for fermented food these days.

I really want to try more Korean foods, in particular kimchi but I am not great with spicy food

Trying to build my tolerance

You can control the chili if you make your own
