Cod's the most expensive, and usually the one that is substituted. Usually with a fish called Pangasius. Ok geek mode over.

Our local chippy is £6.50 for haddock and chips, unless you are an OAP then you get it cheaper. They do other types of fish too, rock, plaice, etc. The cod price changes daily depending on how much they pay for it.

They don't serve gravy though.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

When I started my little thread I had NO IDEA there could be so much to say about fish and chips and the north/south divide. It has been an eye opener.

Lobster and chips was £14.90 a few weeks ago. Haddock and chips is £7.50.

It's about £6.50 for large Haddock and chips around here.

As well as the usual stuff (except gravy..!), they also do things like Rock Eel and battered Mars Bars too.

Around four fifty to a fiver in Leicester and about the same here in MK. All the Leicester chippies get their fish fresh delivered from Grimsby (so they should too as it's the best, and I'm biased). Not many places fry my favourites though these days - plaice and skate.

They all give you far too many chips and could knock the price back by giving smaller portions to be honest. Some chippies sell really mean looking fillets as full-size which I refuse to buy telling 'em I've seen bigger fish fingers! :-d

I think we need a fish and chip tour. You all need to come to my chippy and have the wonderous choice on offer. Then in the charra up to the Midlands, over to the central North, then NE, through Scotland and down to the NW. What do you say? Full price and taste comparisons and local delicacies tested in each place.

In Norwich a large cod with regular chips is around £6.00. I've found some have shops have started selling gravy, chips with cheese etc. In Great Yarmouth on the coast there is a marketplace with several chip stalls who offer flavoured vinegars (chilli, mustard, pickled onion etc) as well as sweet chilli sauce. Chips with pickled onion vinegar are lush.

Went into town and found a chippy, and paid nearly 10 GBP for a small piece of haddock, chips and a can of Coke!

i remember as a kid when my dad had organised fishing contests on the local river severn that eels were not allowed to be weighed in as part of the contest catch but the other anglers used to save any they had caught and give them to my dad and we used to have them for breakfast the next day!,fried in butter or boiled in milk were lovey, jellied eels are nice but there are ways to cook them.

The whole food safety legislations are a minefield.

PCBs and dioxins are bad for you, yet one can eat enough for a year in one well-BBQed burger or rack of ribs!

Go figure!

You can get a decent fish supper in Scotland, especially along the West coast (Anstruther has a cracking chippy), but none of them are a patch on the fish & chips in the NE of England. Whitby really does have the best places.

Like a steak and kidney pudding. The pastry is made using suet.

Because they are steamed the pastry is paler in colour than a pie and that and the shape of them (made in a pudding basin, even the individual ones) is reminiscent of a babies head.

If it sounds gruesome just take a good look at a saveloy next time you're in a southern chippy! If northerners ate those they'd have a nickname for sure!!!

Btw I'm thoroughly northern but if I have gravy with my chips I like it in a tub so I can dip my chips. I don't like them getting soggy before I've eaten them.

Plus I need to know what a babies 'ed is when talking about food!

It's a babbies yed and it's a suet pudding.

What is a suet pudding ?

Like a steak and kidney pudding. The pastry is made using suet.

Because they are steamed the pastry is paler in colour than a pie and that and the shape of them (made in a pudding basin, even the individual ones) is reminiscent of a babies head.

If it sounds gruesome just take a good look at a saveloy next time you're in a southern chippy! If northerners ate those they'd have a nickname for sure!!! "

Doesn't sound appetising at all.

Full price and taste comparisons and local delicacies tested in each place.

Yes. My chippy make a lovely tartar sauce. The pickled quails eggs are really good too.

I remember going to a chippy in Yorkshire with a friend and musing on which fish I should order. She pulled us out of the queue to tell me firmly that I should just ask for fish, that it would be cod and my silly southern nonsense of expecting a range of fish nobody else will eat would hold up the process.

I would just like to put my southerner input into this debate.

The default fish nationwide was haddock back in the day, untill the northerners ate all the fish

Then they brought in the cod, because of the high stock levels that was at the time, at sea.

. Would Like to see your Evidence of This..

As I think its Complete Rubbish..

Its always Been Cod in England and Haddock up North..

Iv lived in London and most Chippys and most people haven't ever heard of fooking Haddock !!

Iv lived in Yorkshire and if want Haddock - you Have to ask for it specially !!

Iv lived in Scotland - and its only Haddock they Serve - And just the same as Yorkshire - If you want Cod you have to ask for Cod..

Fish Supper / Fish n Chips / Fish Teas Expert Here..

And as for your comment about the Northerner's Eating all the Fish..

Haddock is still classed as Sustainable.. Cod is Not..

I'd say it's about £7.00 for haddock & small chips, cod is a couple of quid cheaper.
