I was 18 and in hospital for a minor operation. It took 3 young nurses to shave me down below. One to shave, one to hold me out of the way (not necessary after 10 seconds) and one to check for stubble.

They then gave me an enema and told me to get to the toilet fast before it exploded. I clutched my pyjamas to my chest and started to sprint to the toilets at the other end of the ward to discover it was now visiting hour and the ward was packed!

Afterwards I was told I needed a bath and one of the nurses had to stay with me to ensure I soaped everywhere. She was very thorough. Sigh.

My 94 year old nan was one of the first NHS nurses and she would love this story. In fact it sounds like a rumour she would start herself . She does have an incredible sense of humour after all. Often comes with the profession .

"I was 18 and in hospital for a minor operation. It took 3 young nurses to shave me down below. One to shave, one to hold me out of the way (not necessary after 10 seconds) and one to check for stubble.

They then gave me an enema and told me to get to the toilet fast before it exploded. I clutched my pyjamas to my chest and started to sprint to the toilets at the other end of the ward to discover it was now visiting hour and the ward was packed!

I came around from a general anaesthetic and the nurse looking after me was stunning. I became embarrassed immediately when she laughed and told me the stuff I was saying to her. She was very matter a fact and laughing. the things I said

The following day I was back under for an emergency op and apparently wasn’t so flattering this time to another nurse. I found this out after the nurse on the first op was wheeling someone into the ward and laughed as she passed me. She then came over and told me what had been said to the other nurse. I was mortified. Said nurse then said, I forgot to ask, still want my phone number? Acting all brave I had to say yes as I nervously fumbled with my phone. She put a number in my phone and left smirking. I thought fake number no way and didn’t dare message or call. I waited until silly o clock and text it. Prompt reply received…. It really was her number! I’m not going to billy big balls and say I’ve shagged her all over, I haven’t mores the pity. We still chat shit and laugh about my absolute filthy mouth when coming around from anaesthesia and have said we will meet up at some point. Both work shit shifts, live 70 miles apart and sometimes it’s the not having the person that makes it more exciting.

So no phone numbers, not hands on help etc as you will loose your registration. Not ignoring Tom. Never ignoring. Occasionally tuning it out, but never ignoring.

What Tom might not have seen is the HCAs reporting to the RN about a patient who is crying out because of some reason or another that is (usually) prerecorded on the notes.

Tom won’t have seen that the nurse has already been to said patient a dozen times already that day to make sure they are ok, not to mention the uncounted times the HCA has done everything they can to help.

Tom should work a month as a HCA / ward assistant/ nursing auxiliary or whatever the title used is.

It is honestly one of the hardest parts of the job to become accustomed to, and, for me anyway, made me feel like I was being so cold and hard hearted, but you have to tune it out to do your job.

It’s okay. It goes with the territory. You find us male nurse are often amazing as we feel we have to push ourselves harder to prove we can do it, to prove we can make it.

No offence intended towards any of my female colleagues in nursing, who I know work just as hard, but because men are so rare they stand out, so they HAVE TO be exceptional. It’s a difference between being “that nurse” and “that male nurse.” One stands out the other is part of a mainstream crowd

"Tom thinks that times on the ward have changed. Nurses on the wards are often busier now. It may be a throwback to the old days but the truth is that they used to have more time.
