An expert has claimed that growers will be able to make chocolate taste like berries, nuts or caramel without adding any extra ingredients.

Chocoholics will only need to change the way they ferment cocoa beans to create a variety of different tastes.

Dr. David Gopaulchan, of Nottingham University, told the Royal Society summer exhibition: "I think the industry is going to become like the wine industry.

"People will be able to enjoy chocolate in their favourite flavours, from a specific country or a certain year."

Gopaulchan also suggested that chocolate will be made healthier thanks to changes in the industry.

He explained: "Better natural flavour also means we can use less sugar and more cocoa, which will make the chocolate healthier."

One for all the budding Willy Wonka's out there.....

I've noticed a trend towards this already. Not so much in the way you describe op but there's much more information on cocoa content, country of origin etc

Surely it's not the growers who make the chocolate. They provide beans to the manufacturers. If they are saying they can gene edit or cross pollinate to produce different flavours..who cares as its easy enough now to just add flavorings. You can easily buy food flavorings yourself via Amazon so melt your fav plain choclate add a few drops of a different flavour, stir and let it cool.
