Where the flamboyance of flamingos live

It is something I’m debating doing myself as I’m single and don’t fancy holidaying with family, as that seems to be only other option.

It scares me to be honest, not the thought of being on my own but the travelling bit.

I have been to Barcelona twice and this may be somewhere to go to alone as it know it and love it there.

I’ve done a lot of solo travel - can absolutely recommend. You soak up a place so much more when you are there alone, run on your own schedule and you decide where dinner is every night. Plus you always end up meeting other solo travellers.

I’d recommend doing a solo trip flying into Malaga (I’d spend a day there too if you can as there is good art to see and a couple of amazing restaurants) then a short train journey on to Cadiz, Cordoba, Seville and then Granada. So much to see, so much culture, amazing food, more sun than I can take.

I've done a few holidays by myself. Mostly to Thailand to train in Thai Boxing. Thoroughly recommend.

I'm in Mykonos at the moment. I travelled alone and it's the best thing I did. Met some amazing people. Even managed to have sex while I was here. I travel back in a couple hours xx

Been to Thailand on my own and had a great time. Unfortunately will have to wait till next year to do Cambodia or Vietnam alone. In all three cases you need at least 10 days in county.

Their summer is our Winter so maybe save up holidays and money go long distance, still quite cheap.

The US was great as I hired a car and just saw the sights....and got picked up by a couple there on one visit, so what's not to like?

I've always taken Solo Holidays, as it suits me, my wishes and can choose my own daily routine.

Though most were package holidays with included flights, I usually didn't follow the options of going on Tour Company recommended excursions.

Instead, I behaved and acted like the locals, using local buses and allied services to get around. I often ate off the Tourist Track, preferring to eat where locals meet for a meal; that too, can often mean paying far less!

My favourite parts for touring are Cyprus, Malta and the Canaries.

Alas, due to a Medical issue, I can no longer take foreign trips, so my Touring days are over.

I didn't holiday on my own until I was 43 and it was the best decision I've ever made. It's so incredibly liberating, it's an amazing confidence booster, and it gives you more reason to talk to other people.

I usually vary my accommodation, depending on where I'm going..hotel or self catering studio..but in Florence I thought I'd try a hostel and I loved it. There was a great bar and restaurant where I made friends with people of all ages from various places around the globe. And the Trenitalia trains are fantastic for zipping between cities, and much cheaper than the UK.

My favourite trip so far has been Christmas/New Year on the east coast of Sicily (Syracuse, Catania & Taormina). It was stunning and the weather was glorious. Oh happy days

The wanderlust in my veins is itching to travel again. Fingers crossed it won't be too long

I went to Lesvos on my own recently and in the past I've done China, India and Nepal.

You can choose a hotel and just browse local tavernas to eat. You soon get chatting. Another option is organised tours like the India / Nepal ones as you are with the same group seeing sites and soon get to know people. There are companies that do solo holidays if you want to try that option first..

But holidaying on your own is great as you go where you want and at your pace..

I went into the travel agents and asked what deals they had to a Greek Island that I'd not been to and booked the cheapest

I went a couple of years ago to Tenerife Costa Adeje for the first time holidaying on my own.

I felt like a lemon and a bit strange at the airport with nobody to chat with etc and on the plane.

It was also weird going for meals on my own as it was all inclusive lots of couples and families about etc.

However I spent days at the pool chatting with others and was playing golf as well so also met some really nice people for different parts of the world.

Yes. I went by train to my mates wedding in Burgundy a few years back. Made a little holiday of it, stopping off in Dijon on the way down and Paris on the way back. It's was really important for me in terms of self development being a socially awkward and anxious weirdo. I went out for dinner and drinks and forced myself to socialise with random strangers and sometimes having to over come language barriers. After a couple of bottles of wine over dinner in Dijon I hit the town. I became quite the social butterfly, befriended a fair few people and had a brilliant night out. Proved to my self I could do it, I could hold my own in unfamiliar and scarry social situations. This confidence in myself paid dividends a few years later when I went to my first club as a single.

I now think self holidays are a great adventure and push you to do things for yourself.

Previously been away twice on my own. Both times to Lanzarote - has its own micro climate but can be a bit breezy. First time I went all inc. But was hardly there apart for food and sleep. Befriended an Irish bar owner who knew of places to rent, so got in there for my next visit, right in the beach front!

Have been in Toledo (Spain) by myself for a week. I've made lots of friends on a language and culture course and have barely had an hour go by where I was wondering what to do next. Don't recommend Toledo for wheelchairs though

As much as I am fine in my own company at home, I've never holidayed alone and have travelled with friends or family since being single, but think I'll break that duck later this year. Contemplating an activity holiday so I don't get too bored - tennis or something...

I've only done it in this country, not abroad, and I really loved it. I felt really self-conscious the first time, as if everyone could see into my soul and tell I was a Billy-no-mates. After a day or two I relaxed into it and enjoyed the new place I was exploring. I remember far more about my solo trips than those with family.

I love travelling on my own. Got the bug at 17, when caught the train from Victoria to Dover, ferry and three trains through Europe, arrived in Venice to meet my parents 33 hours later.

Since then done numerous 3/4 day city breaks in Europe, week in Egypt travelling down the Nile,; various trips to Italy arriving in one airport and departing a different one 3 weeks later, travelling as I please via train; and Mexico.

I love the freedom of doing what I want to do, when I want to do it. It’s normally long days exploring, food and just sitting taking it all in.

When I got divorced, once the dust settled I drove to Hull, overnight ferry to Zeebrugge then to the Nurburgring Nordschlife and paid for a fast lap in a 991 GT3 RS.

It’s such an underrated country to explore, and they love fast cars so it really helped sort me out.

I do lots of solo holidays and tend to find that the better experiences are when you can immerse yourself in local culture. As some others have said eat or drink at the places the locals go to and avoid other tourists as much as possible.

^ Yes, exactly this. I've never paid single occupancy charges. I book my flights directly, and I use Booking.com for accommodation. The more trips you make, the more discounts you get, and most have a refundable cancellation policy up to 1 or 2 days before the trip.

It all depends what you want to do, I’ve travelled alone a lot, I like exploring and have been pretty much everywhere. Meeting new people and travel mates is not on my agenda when I travel.

Cruises are good, you can meet new people if you want and keep to yourself if you prefer. You tend to get a lot of solo travellers on cruises and a lot of large family groups, so you get a lot of single people, but travelling with family who may be looking at hanging out.

I always find that city breaks are better than resort holidays, generally, as you don’t stand out travelling alone.

You should be able to get from London to Milan quite easily in a day with just one change across Paris. The train journey through the Alps is great.

I did what I wanted,

when I wanted,

barely spoke to anyone,

had a great time sightseeing, it really is a brilliant city.

I've booked a horse riding holiday to Andalucia in September. I'm going alone, but there will be others who are booking for the same week. There will be daily riding, plus trips to local places of interest etc. I figured for a first holiday alone, it'd be good to have an itinerary & company!
