Less in our yard too. Plus bats seem to be quiet

It’s the wrong time of year to plant a tree.

I usually plant 100-150 over winter every year filling in hedgerows etc. I also reuse tree guards rather than buying new.

I disagree. With care they will thrive.

I disagree with you OP.

When did you last plant a tree? When have you seen mass hedgerows/scaling planting between March and September?

They will start their life stressed which will cause problems through maturity. It’s far easier on them to wait until the cooler months where they can establish a good root system before excessive warmth/drought starts.

I’m a suburbanite. I’ve planted many trees all year round. They still live and nature would not itself plant in winter.

I planted four trees in spring... an apple, a cherry, a pear, and a plum.

I think the plum tree might be dead though, as the others have leaves and buds on, but the plum tree looks exactly the same as when I planted it, nothing on it at all.

If there's anyone who's knowledgeable about such things and can shed some light, in all ears

Some fruit trees prefer to be planted in autumn. We did exactly the same with our cherry last year and we’re just about to take it out when suddenly it went mental. Give it at least one full winter/spring cycle unless it’s obviously rotting/drying out.

I think you might have planted 3 trees and a stick, but I will let an expert confirm

Also, recently planted some oak saplings that the kids propagated from acorns when they were toddlers. Over ten years old and both doing really well

I planted some a couple of weeks ago, some sweet chestnuts. Usually in winter I spend a couple of days planting bare root trees on the estate where I work.
