"It’s the wrong time of year to plant a tree. I usually plant 100-150 over winter every year filling in hedgerows etc. I also reuse tree guards rather than buying new. " I disagree. With care they will thrive.

They will start their life stressed which will cause problems through maturity. It’s far easier on them to wait until the cooler months where they can establish a good root system before excessive warmth/drought starts.

I’ve planted many trees all year round. They still live and nature would not itself plant in winter.

"I planted four trees in spring... an apple, a cherry, a pear, and a plum. I think the plum tree might be dead though, as the others have leaves and buds on, but the plum tree looks exactly the same as when I planted it, nothing on it at all. If there's anyone who's knowledgeable about such things and can shed some light, in all ears " Some fruit trees prefer to be planted in autumn. We did exactly the same with our cherry last year and we’re just about to take it out when suddenly it went mental. Give it at least one full winter/spring cycle unless it’s obviously rotting/drying out.
