"Did anyone here learn to swim as an adult? Asking for a friend... " I could swim but I looked ridiculous. I didn't know how to do freestyle and do that thing of putting my head in the water to breathe out and turning my head to the side to breathe in. Whenever I tried it I would ch*ke. (this site doesn't let me use that word!) I went for lessons on how to do that and they were well worth it. It took a couple of attempts at getting the right teacher. I'm a proficient swimmer now. I may get some lessons to do the breaststroke, because when I do the frog-like leg motion, my legs don't do shit to propel me forwards.

"So I did have lessons as a kid but I was scared of the water and never really got past the floating stage I've been thinking of having lessons for years but always been too body conscious. I really want to learn though as I want to be able to have proper holidays and stuff. Just wondering what lessons in an adult setting are like. " There's a leisure centre near us and they advertise lessons for all ages with the emphasis on being sympathetic. I think you might find there are all ages in the lesson with you

Kids are the meanest " Would you consider private lessons? Is there a hotel near you with a pool, often they allow the general public to use them. We used to do that, it was adults only after a certain time and there were all shapes and sizes. Nobody really notices anyone else they're all too busy swimming. Although I have seen one too many very elderly lady bending over naked in front of me

"Given how much information is on the internet these days (especially YouTube) you could teach yourself the basics, maybe practice a bit a quiet times the pool or even at a beach or lake to get your confidence up? Swimming is definitely a valuable skill and luckily it's one you never forget " I agree with what you say except for practicing at the beach or a lake. Even strong swimmers get caught out in the sea.

I'd second the hotel suggestion by Mrs NiceCouple, especially later on in the day/during work hours during the week - you'll find they can be quiet/sometimes even empty. Some leisure centers offer private tutorials, they do tend to have a waiting list but that could be an idea? I've been for a swim when a size 30 and no one gave a hoot. Remember when you posted about going for walks? And then you did? Find that courage again. No need for any embarrassment or shame, you're doing it for you. You've reminded me I need to get back into it - if I can with my currently chubby generous self and surrounded by Cheshire yummy mummies, you definitely can.

" Thanks, yeah there's loads of hotels near me so I'll check if any of them do lessons You're right. I tend to overthink these things. It's scary but I'm almost 30 now; I need to put my big girl pants on and start pushing myself out my comfort zone before life passes me by!

Yes, got be very careful in the ocean but as a beginner I wouldn't recommend getting out of standing depth.

You'll end up regretting things as the years pass you by so start looking at places tomorrow. Fuck the comfort zone (bar when you're perioding because that's needed). It's good to challenge yourself a little.
