The 72-year-old man suffered from a rare condition known as pneumoscrotum - which was caused by an excess of air building up in his body - and doctors spent three days steadily releasing air from his body in order to cure the problem.

There have been several similar cases in past years, but the whistling issue has never previously been reported.

Dr. Brant Bickford admitted it wasn't entirely clear how the problem had been resolved.

He explained in the American Journal of Case Reports: "Whether the air escape attenuated the patient’s presentation and led to a more favourable outcome will never be known."
