"I wind em up. I can't resist it. I lead them on a merry old goose chase - as long as I have the time - and like you say its stops them scamming other people. My account number? Sure its 8008135 My name? I'll spell it for you. Its I + M + A and then its K + U + N + T Just read it back to me so i know you've got it right I often like to be a Potato Salesman and I eagerly hawk them various quantities of Maris Pipers and King Edwards. I've been the admin at a sexual health clinic and say I've got their results.... and what cream they need for what part I've been an upper class toff and offered to buy their company. One time I had one hapless girl on the phone thinking I owned Amazon for about 20 mins I've also been there long lost son/brother and was glad they got in touch as was looking forward to being reunited But the best one - the one that must drive them mad - is to put them on 'hold' i.e. put the phone down so they can still hear you and pretend to take a call from another rival scammer and 'pay' that scammer £5,000 and then go back and say sorry I can't buy you any Amazon gift cards I've just spent all my money. All good fun, I travel a lot so often have lots of spare time en route. Like I say while I'm being a total dick some pensioner - your mum? your nan? - isn't being scammed. " Classic! I will try of these

"Nothing prevents scammers. You can keep one of them on the phone for as long as you like it won't make any difference. People are vulnerable for many reasons, scammers will always exist. Make the people you know who are vulnerable (it isn't just the elderly it's also the naive, the susceptible to get rich quick ideas etc) aware that they should not trust *anybody* who calls or emails unless they 100% know for certain who they are. My mum was scammed, twice, by the same scam. We just had a conversation with my dad in which we told him to trust nobody who rings or emails. The problem is con artists are plausible and manipulative, they play on loneliness, greed, fear, pride... I've been targeted on Facebook by romance fraudsters although I knew straight away what they were up to. " Very sound advice. You can do all the tactics you like but they will target the elderly and/or vulnerable sadly. It will always go on. But educate people to be vigilant.

" The main problem is that people think they know better and it won't happen to them. The number of women in their 70s who get conned by younger, wealthy guys is shocking. They actually manage to convince themselves that the guy is genuine he doesn't need to try too hard beyond some ridiculously over the top compliments and declarations of love.
