Might sound silly to any ‘big’ club Supporters but having watched lower leagues football most of my life I tend to admire those smaller clubs that prosper against the odds.

Like when Yeovil Town made the Championship, and even though it sticks in my throat to say it, the likes of Wycombe a couple of years ago (albeit in controversial circumstances when the season was truncated early). Both those sides didn’t have huge cash injections to dope the league like some teams do.

For example, I can’t really admire the likes of Bournemouth making the Premier League given the financial inputs and rule breaking they did go get there first then. Brentford however is more impressive a couple of seasons ago.

I didn't think of it like that but it's not silly at all! Any smaller clubs achieving against the odds adds to the romanticism of football that many think is lost

Grossly overpaid prima Donna's!

They'll fall over as if they've been shot if any opposing player comes within 5 yds of them!

I really always liked Arsenal under Wenger. He doesn’t get enough credit, revolutionised English football and football in general. The game wouldn’t be up to its current standard without his input and the invincibles team was the best I’ve seen play in person even though that pains me as I wish QPR got to that kind of level one day.

I also liked Lippi's Juventus team of the mid to late 90s with players like Del Piero, Boksic, Paolo Sousa, Paulo Montero, Ciro Ferrara et al.

The Deportivo La Coruna team of the early to mid 00s was also a great watch with players like Roy Makaay, Djalminha, Diego Tristan and Mauro Silva.

The Valencia team of the turn of the century with Claudio Lopez, Ruben Baraja, David Albelda, Gaizka Medieta was a brilliant counter-attacking team and regularly spanked Barcelona.

I don’t get the resentment that rugby supporters have for football, tbh, but whenever someone properly has a dig at football it’s inevitably a rugby man or woman that does it!

The “overpaid” players tend to be at the elite level. The average journeyman lower league player will earn a lot less than you think!

But then at the elite level in rugby, now it’s professional, the money is also crazy (not at football levels *yet* admittedly) yet nobody whinges about overpaid rugby players. Or tennis players. Or F1. Or basketball. Or American Football. Or cricketers etc. I could go on!

It’s easy to say it’s a bloody stupid game but no other has such a global appeal.

Italian football was the gold standard in the 90s. Deportivo also had that great comeback in the CL, once again against Milan! My argument is looking a bit crap now

I'm not sure many rugby fans resent football. I think there's an air of superiority about the behaviour of rugby fans when compared to the behaviour of football fans and its mostly well deserved as football fans behaviour can be dreadful... But its also creeping slowly into rugby fans and cricket fans behaviours too mow.which is nothing to crow about.

If footballers can get paid loads for what they do.. Good luck to them. I'm a rugby fan and love the values woven into the sport. But we are far from perfect and can always learn from other sports. Football has a widespread appeal rugby will never have.

Begrudgingly, the MUFC team of the late 90s (around the treble). Amazing team, winning mentality, but also played great football to watch (which is why I can't admire any Mourinho teams).

Outside the PL, was slightly obsessed with the early 90s AC Milan team of Gullit, Van Basten and Rijkard!

The Tranmere team when the had John Aldridge up front, Pat Nevin and Johnny Morrisey on the wings. They regularly beat top flight teams in Cup games and flirted so many times with the first division but never made it. They had a cavalier approach to playing - classic vindaloo tactics (‘we’re gonna score one more than you’)

I always wonder what could have been if they did make it. Now they are languishing in the lower leagues.

I always wonder what could have been if they did make it. Now they are languishing in the lower leagues.

Yeah! I couldn't choose that TRFC team because I'm a fan and supposed to be admiring another team for the purposes of the thread. But yeah, the TRFC team of the mid to late 90s was

Didn't they lose in the playoff semi finals about three or four years in a row?

My nan’s spare room.

The Blackpool team under Ian Holloway, you always thought they had goals in them but couldn’t actually believe they were where they were.

They even washed their own kits.

But I’m cheating because I support them.

The team I don’t support but admire is the Bobby Robson Ipswich Town team of the late 70s early 80s. 2nd in the league, winning in Europe playing great football. Introduced Dutch players to British football which was radical at the time.
