To break or not to break?

I always break my book spines- I hate reading a book half closed!

My friend hates that I do it so I constantly send her photos of me doing it just to annoy her.

Do you break yours? I am a big advocate for breaking book spines

I have a kindle so it’s not a problem now. When I was a lot lot younger, I was overly anal about books. I wouldn’t lend them out and got pissy if anyone looked and crumpled them!!

Oh god no. I hate damaging new books. I like them to stay as perfect as they can.

But if I have a second hand book, any damage doesn't bother me.

I have a Kindle so no books get broken in this house, however when i read paper books i did break the spines so it was easier to read the book.

I’m an active spine breaker. Love my books and the physical connection. I also fold corners instead of using a book mark. Sacrilege to many I know.

The smell of books. Love a second hand book store.

The look of books. I could live in a world of bookshelves.

Never got the hang of e-books. It has never worked for me.

I re-read books which means that my spine breaking tactics have forced me to replace favourite re-reads many times when pages start to tumble out

I’m with you on this one OP, but totally understand why your friend finds it tricky. Love that you photograph your book anarchy for them, that really made me chuckle.

If it was just a cheap paperback I picked up in the supermarket then yeah, chances are I'm gonna donate it to the charity shop at some point.

I do have certain books I keep pristine though. Nothing like super expensive first editions, mainly graphic novels & books that are special to me.

Most of my reading is done on Kindle app these days though. I like how I have instant definitions to words and I can see how long I have left in a chapter cause I am sad like that.

Feeling queasy just reading the thread. But I'm on my third copy of some books (mostly discworld) the annoying thing is that my first copies were signed.

Yeah and worse, if I’m travelling very light for an overnight climb / Wildcamp or to the beach for a sunset jet-ski without a bag I’ll sometimes just tear a few pages out to take to save space.

Buy hardbacks so that they open properly and the spines don't break. Use bookmarks. The only defacing that should ever be allowed of a book is an authors signature, or the writing of a carefully composed message on the flyleaf when gifting to a loved one.

Never! Not if I can help it, sometimes it happens when ther text ends?starts close to the spine though. Never read in the bath either! My grandad use to take me all over kent to 2nd hand book shops, one day said I could any book I wanted. I found and chose a Robin Hood book with colour prints which was £5. He told me I chose one of the most expensive he had seen and when he found I had written my name and age in the front I got a very stern telling off as it turned out was some first editiom worth alot more than £5! The only thing I do now is smell them lol
