Do they even realise how much it destroys someone when they do it?

What is the point?

fear, low self esteem, to impress you, because they can, because they have a mental health problem, because they know you won't like the truth, because they are trying to be nice and so on and so forth

"It's a polarising topic.

This is true. Even the autistic people who are brutally truthful let a little lie slip out once in a while.

Everyone does lie to some degree, but when you know your lie will destroy the other person I just don't understand why you would do it.

Can you really ever trust anyone?

It can only destroy them if they allow it too!

It sounds like you’re in a sad place right now through no fault of your own, so I send you care and hope it gets better soon.

Unfortunately, some people are basically shiz and they hurt other people through their actions.

Trust is hard won and easily lost. That’s on them, not you. Be kind to yourself first and foremost please OP. Kx

^this and lots more.

Cause they can then accuse you of doing what they are doing but you aren't doing what they are!

They know you've caught them out!

And their lies can destroy the innocent.

Know that one all too well.

It's something I struggle with now. Trusting. Not sure I'll ever allow myself to trust again and I find that the saddest of all of it. When they make that decision (and it is a choice) to lie, I don't think they fully understand how deeply the impact will be felt or how long the trauma will last (because it most certainly can be traumatising)

That shit can fully change how you live your life in the future. It ain't just the here and now it affects.

Yes.

But it’s hard to trust once it’s been proven that your trust also lies to you. (Profound eh? )

But I do believe we can trust people.

Sadly in the moment they don’t care about anyone but themselves and their own selfish needs. What’s worse is when you’ve tried to be encouraging yet they still continue to lie and cheat even when you know truth

For what it's worth - I believe people lie because that are worried about the consequences if they tell the truth.

Kind of saving their (nitrate-free) bacon or something like that...

I think we've all told the odd kind-hearted lie at one time or other. Complimenting someone's new haircut when you don't actually like it, for example. I agree with you that not everyone tells the more self-serving lies that the OP has been at the receiving end of.

Hence why I surmised that everyone lies, which is dependent on the context and sentiment.

I worker with one guy who used to be a friend but his lies were unreal. One time at work I was in the office and in the next room was my so called friend was telling lies about me I heard everything he said. I just never spoke to him as a friend ever since and this was back in 2011 or 2012

Depends on the lie.

If someone really fat asks you how they look in an outfit, are you really going to say - you look like a burst couch luv, have you not got any mirrors in your house ?

Or will you say - you look fine, I don't know what you are worried about ?

I've baked this cake and am super excited for you to try it ....

Takes taste, bland as hell -

A) it's wonderful, you are improving so much. (Lie)

B) Jesus, maybe you should give up and find something you are good at.

Wow.. This is a Whole massive debate that would probably need several types of expert professionals to help...

You go round the twist self analysing this. Self preservation, be true to yourself & try to absorb other peoples negativities. X

Like all the bad things we do as people, because we can. To protect ourselves, to protect other people, to hide from a painful truth, to do something we know will cause pain if discovered, yet feel we need/deserve to do it and the one thing you have to remember.

No matter how big, damaging and painful the lie to which you have believed, it is not a measure of you. You have not failed yourself, or anyone else by believing it.

Trust isn't failure, without it all your other healthy relationships wouldn't exist. So hold on to it for now, but you can and should invest it in others again.

Some continue to lie as they've told so many untruths that the truth would uncover their lies. Yes there are some who cannot or will not lie, they have learnt there is nothing but harm to come from lying and you have to remember all the lies you've told or you could come unstuck.
