How long do you wait before intervening? My mate just told me off for doing this when my point was particularly relevant to the topic in question

You can reply with,"sorry for talking while you were butting in."

In a discussion I try to wait until the person has finished the point they're making. If they move on to something else I will interrupt because they're not giving me the opportunity to express my opinion. In a normal conversation I just keep quiet until there's a natural break. I really hate being interrupted or talked over unless they're trying to tell me a lion is charging towards me

I hate being talked over and always call it out. It's so rude.

Not that I ever have much to say in a group for exactly that reason.

surrounded by twinkly lights

I'll wait unless they try to change the subject, then I'll bring in my point.

Some however really don't want to listen, so I keep to lighthearted subjects and let them waffle on

It depends on what sort of a conversation it is.

If it’s just casual chatting around a topic, then I’ll wait for a natural lull or change of speaker to add my bit.

If it’s a topic I have actual real knowledge of and someone says something glaringly inaccurate, I can’t help but just jump in.

Does your mate ramble on without getting to the point of monopolise the conversation? I think you have to interrupt then or it becomes a monologue.

Does that happen often? Hastings has clearly got a lot wilder since I last visited.

OP, sometimes not long enough, sometimes too long. I try hard when I have something I want to say not to fall into that trap of just waiting for a gap in the convo just to say what I want to and forgetting to listen to what the other is saying.

I did not interrupt to be rude but sometimes by the time they finish I’ve forgotten what I was going to say

Same lol.

If someone continually interrupts me I just stop the dialogue because they obviously have no interest in what I've got to say.

I can either be quiet or very full on. I don't seem to have a middle ground.

I think there are times it's perfectly acceptable to butt in.. If someone is trying to make a point, says something that requires clarification or justification - a simple, hold on a moment but what about etc, a reply question mid sentence, (as a 3rd party ) but if 2 people are engaged in convo and someone joins and butts in adversely - that can be annoying. That said, if in a group of people, I try to engage with everyone that way all have input into the convo.

I work with a woman who constantly does it and tells you the same story 55 times.

When we tell her she stops, but she also repeats what you've just said ,like a parrot !.

Tbf they'd fit in quite nicely on the Fire hills outside Fairlight from what I remember.

As i have been chair of a few charities i have to take meets some people just love the sound of their own voice as chair i get to shut them up to allow others to express their opinion.

But in general conversation to butt in is hard i will let some one put there point across if they start to just ramble on i interject with a comment weather agreeing or disagreeing. As to time before that depends on subject and person
