Funny Games.

You don't even see much gore, but just what's implied made me very disturbed.

I also don't know if this next one should even be classed as a horror film, but it's usually included in lots of Disturbing Horror Lists. Men Behind The Sun. There are a lot of disturbing scenes in it, but I think it really got to me because these things really happened to prisoners of war and shows the real cruelty humans can inflict on one another.

Irreversible is definitely the most disturbing film I have ever watched. I just felt it didn't fall into the horror category that the OP asked.

I thought Saw was good. It's the rest of the films where they suddenly decided to make it a torture festival instead of having a good plot.

If anyone is in London, my friend Nick runs the "cult cinema club" at the Genisis cinema. This year he's shown "Irreversible" and "Salo" that people have mentioned so far on this thread. Next Thursday he's showing the original "Supria" if anyone fancies it. There is a film discussion afterward for all those that like to chat and listen to other opinions on the films.

Massively impressed with the suggestions so far. I’d add ‘The Vanishing’ original version, disturbing but it was also regarded as a PG film when it first came out.

Irreversible I watched once, have the DVD it’ll never come out again.

Night of the Demon, ‘it’s in the trees, it’s coming’

A Serbian Film and The Human Centipede, rubbish shock horror. Think of the worst low budget but high in controversy topic and make a film about it.

Martyrs, on the other hand is truly shocking and has a great story and message behind it.

Never liked ‘Funny Games’ just felt the Director was telling me off, for watching his film

but it’s a good one for this list.

Well according to the BBFC there are only four horror films classed as 'too disturbing' so currently don't have an 18 Cert allowing them to be shown in cinemas and/or released on DVD etc... so they are effectively banned...

Murder-Set-Pieces (2004)

Grotesque (2009)

The Bunny Game (2010)

Hate Crime (2013)

Slumber Party Massacre II (1987) is a comedy slasher but it too has never got an 18 Cert as the required small cuts were never done so it never got a release. It would likely get a 15 Cert uncut now!

PS - Martyrs (2008) is the most disturbing horror film to date

I've been told about a film by a friend this weekend. Man Under the Sun. She said even thinking about it now made her feel queasy. She said the fact it was made in the 80s with limited special effects made you question whether some of the stuff was actually real. I'm always intrigued by these films due to not believing I'll be moved in any way. But my friend's assurances has made me hesitant. Interested to know if anyone has seen it.

I mentioned it up thread. It's definitely not for the fainthearted.

I found it most chilling as it was about POW camps in Japan and these medical 'experiments' were actually carried out on people, even if the ones in the movie weren't real, just knowing that someone actually suffered like that at some point is quite jarring.

I think it has a cult status kind of like A Serbian Film and Cannibal Holocaust.

I have seen both of the latter but came out unscathed. A Serbian Film I actually credit for being well made and well acted as my expectations were a low budget amateur production, which it was but it was nevertheless, professionally made. So, would I need you to hold my hand to watch Man Under the Sun? Films going for the shock factor normally fall flat as they don't capture the dark and the light, rather they just go in with a sledgehammer I feel.

I've never watched A Serbian Film, reading about that one scene that everyone talks about was enough to put me off. I will hold your hand if you hold mines for that

If you do watch it, let me know what you think. It's been a good 10 years since I watched it, so I might give it another go and see if I am still as traumatised.

The Vanishing original Dutch version, not the absolutely terrible remake with a Hollywood ending. What really surprising it was released as a 12 certificate, so that’ll put a few kids into therapy afterwards.

Men Behind the Sun is brutal. So is Black Sun: The Nanking Massacre.

Salo, aka 120 Days of Sodom is a film that leaves you feeling like you need a shower afterward.

Possession starring Sam Neil is a good one that gets under your skin. The acting in it is amazing, even as it heads into WTF territory

I loved A Serbian Film. As you say, it's well made and acted but it's so over the top at times it's more like a comedy in places.

Deal! I have seen most of the films discussed on here and none have left their mark on me emotionally. Perhaps I'm clinically insane. I guess this is the challenge. For me to find out what my limits are. I find it interesting to see how imaginative filmmakers are in pushing the boundaries.

I've not seen Irreversible mentioned. I found the first sequence a bit disorientating and more impactful than the subway sequence. But still not enough to sicken me per se. I may revisit it too as only watched it over a decade ago myself.

Me too, the realism of kids, peer pressure, things escalating with no main agenda... freaked me out for a fair while & I love the saw/ battle royale collections & general gore.

It’s just a very realistic film about a nuclear war breaking out and the effects after.

A slow burn where society crumbles and people slowly die next to their loved ones from radiation poisoning

Watched that online. I thought the story behind it was more interesting than the film itself but it's worth a (difficult) watch.

The actress and writer Rodleen Getsic has had a pretty traumatic life and I can see why she had to make this film.

I’m interested in crime and serial killers, but I remember watching a drama based on Ted Bundy and it was so horrible my partner at the time stopped it and didn’t restart it
