Hamstring injury advice

Hey all so as it says need some advice. Back in early February I pulled my hamstring. Really bad waiting for an appointment with my GP at the beginning of next month but seeing anyone has had this type of injury before and what they did to heal it. The injury is at the top of the hamstring.

Mine is hurting non stop every day I'm taking ibuprofen had freeze spray but it's not touching it. I rest it when I can but getting fed up now. Can't kick a footie can't go to the gym. I am just stuck and looking for options.

I haven’t done a hammy in years but from what I can remember it’s a combination of hot and cold treatments and plenty of rest. If you keep feeling it then try some support such as Rock Tape.

I tore my calf muscle last year. Not quite the same, admittedly. Not sure how effective ice spray is? I used ice packs. I went to a physio privately for a couple of sessions on top of the NHS physio. NHS physio basically just chatted to me. The private physio did various things but ultimately it just took a long time too heal. Too much rest is no good. Need to rebuild strength gradually with specific, gentle exercise, increasing it as you can.

Iv been trying to fix mine for about 5 months altho i think its more to do with too much driving stopping it healing properly have to do a shit tone of arse squeezes as i drive and do that bridge thingy to warm it up for game days or i struggle to sprint 3 quarter speed

I would recommend paying a physio and getting it checked out properly.

A few years ago, I had a hamstring injury. I kept stretching, thinking it would make it feel better (it usually does!). I actually had a tiny tear in it and I was making it worse by stretching. I had ultra sound therapy to speed up the recovery process.

I had a severe grade 2 and nearly took my hammy off the bone a few years ago.

Time doesn’t help, if it’s a tear or rupture you’ll be building scar tissue which will just tear again once it’s under tension.

You need physio to break down scar tissue and repair muscle fibre or, ultimately, it’s a 20p fix to a 50p problem.

Sadly, hammy injuries are such a huge issue that they need physical therapy if there is any sort of tear.

Sounds like that’s your situation as a pull wouldn’t rectified itself with rest.

Not guaranteed as I’m no Dr. but my advice is pay a private physio for a consultation ASAP.

High hamstring, especially this long, your probably looking at proximal hamstring tendinopathy

I wouldn’t bother with the GP. They are useless at this stuff

Find yourself a good sports physio. You need a well planned out, eccentric based rehab program

If it is a tendinopathy, rest, like many are suggesting on this thread, will actually make the injury worse.

People are quick to throw around rest as a catch all for any injury. Our understanding of tendinopathy has changed over the last 15 years. Rest will absolutely make it worse, not better

Your local hospital may have a physio self-referral thing where you can just see a physio directly - have a hunt around their website.

Or pay for one. Or most gyms have an “attached” physio service.

I agree with other posters, get to a sports physio. Yes it costs but they will know and understand in a way that a GP just simply won’t.

If you chat with other sporty people in your area, they will be able to recommend a good one

As most others have said, a sports physio is best. If it is high hamstring it may also end up being linked to a weakness throughout your IT band or glute which is slowing the healing process. Well placed and well applied KT tape, gentle stretching and gentle exercise is certainly the latest advice from sports professionals. However, everyone including myself is giving advice based on our own past or thoughts. You may have something completely unrelated to our advice so see that specialist sports physio and I'm sure you'll be back at it in no time

Rugby is actually one of the safest sports to play injury wise

I'd be concerned about muscle atrophy, if doing too little. A physio will give you a good plan, so that you can know if stretching, light exercise like swimming etc, would be right for you. I could use my hands to ease things but I'd hate to make it worse.
