Exhausted from the gym

Been two days in a row after 2 years away and am suffering from DOMS like there's no tomorrow. Any other fitness fanatics (or couch potatoes!) about?

I am neither gym not potato. I enjoy being fairly active with plenty of rest and leisure. E.g. I like a walk to a local restaurant and have a bloody massive meal.

I've been doing two workouts a day for weeks now, and my body is telling me to ease up. Joints are hurting as well as muscles.

Gotta listen to your body or you'll end up with injury that puts you out for longer than you want and takes forever to get back to fitness from.

Bit of a couch potato here but I am going to the lido 3 to 4 times a week and doing a 2k swim each time to try and compensate for all the alcohol in the sun I'm consuming.

I've tried all sorts of warm ups and stretches over the years and I still get DOMS . It's manageable when I go to the gym regularly though. Not like the stiffness after some time away that leaves you walking like a badly oiled robot .

avid squash player for 35 years. introduced yoga into my routine once or twice a week on non playing days about 15 years ago when i hit 40. less injury prone too. plenty of good you tube videos. you don’t have to spend loads of money with a yoga studio (although it does help to get the basics taught to you in a class). you can explore from there

Had the same thing at the end of last year… after the first workout since covid was in full effect… i couldn’t even stretch my arms or tip toe (triceps/biceps and calves were shattered). Just the level of strain was excruciating even tho i had done 50-60% of what I used to do way back. I kept on going through the pain - 3 days on, 1 day off.

After 2 weeks with proper rest (sleep) and a good diet (high protein) the effects of that kind of severe DOMs stopped. Although i have to say that first week was hell, and yeh… a massage was sorta necessary otherwise no way was I gonna be able to go sleep with that pain.

Sounds stupid, but you gotta push through - your body will naturally adapt. I’m no doctor so take it with a pinch of salt, and if its not DOMS, obvs get professional medical advice.

Oh and try and stretch and warm up as much as you can. Emphasis on stretching, even when you’re back home from the gym keep doing it.

Chinese Takeaway near you

4-5 times a week religiously even on my birthday & Christmas.

It's a lifestyle now not just a hobby. Initially like most lads did it to attract the ladies lol but soon realised its for me! I do it cause I like it, I feel great during & after, clothes fit better & cause I'm happy in how I look I'm more confident . So many physical & mental benefits

I find it's always worse the 3rd and 4th days!

Yes, I'm back from an Olympic weightlifting session. I think all my limbs might fall off tomorrow.

Feels good though!

I do boxercise, zumba and gym inbetween. Boxercise is brutal but I feel so energised after it

Nutrition and sleep is important. I also find that stress has a knock on effect too. But sometimes you can have a good or bad workout with no rhyme nor reason. For me I still try to push myself but will adjust aims according to how I feel that day. Cycling the intensity levels week to week is a good tool as well.

The best way to start exercising again is to go lightly. DOMS is natural, as you're abusing your body but you'll probably get into a routine and become accustomed to exercise and it. But, go easy. Get some advice from gym staff on frequency and your exercise plan. Remember to warm up and include stretching.

It's natural to feel DOMs after a long period away. I'd say you need to wram up for about 10 minutes either through cardio or dynamic stretching and then after your work out, do some more stretching and use a foam roller and that may help reduce the DOMs. Although I'm sure the more you work on your routine, the more your body will be used to it.

On the other hand, once your body does get use to it, that probably mean you need to up the intensity or change the routine up a bit

Was my first day back on Monday after 5 weeks and the DOMS have faded enough now for me to go back today! Training legs today. That's gonna be fun :/

I was not even aware of the DOMS term.

Although I probably should be. But average about 90 minutes a day exercise.

A mix of swimming and cycling. I don't get muscle fatigue probably due to maintaining this regime for the last five years.

Have managed 42 hrs on the bike this month.
