"If it’a causing unbearable pain won’t they do it on the NHS? " Honestly-I’m not sure. I have low pain tolerance so maybe they think my pain isn’t as bad as I’m saying it is? My mother had unbearable pain for years like 10+ years, and she only got a hysterectomy 3 years ago.

"If it’a causing unbearable pain won’t they do it on the NHS? " I'm sure the OP has done her research but I'd expect the wait to be quite long and there may even be an age restriction too. It isn't really but it's probably under elective surgery too.

I know They can be a bit funny about young people having them because of the children bit. My cousin wanted a vasectomy at 20 and they refused to do it. Worth checking though if it’s affecting your life badly.

" I know a few people looking aswell at different ages and it appears there is a lot of Sexism involved so you need to find the right GP and hope they refer you to the right specialist. My friends have been denied because the GP thinks they know better and refuse because "You will change your mind" or "one day you will want kids" and believe me neither are true for my friends. I couldn't tell you where to look but there is likely a resource somewhere that will point you towards sympathetic doctors

I’ve faced so much sexism from the doctors and the NHS that I’m wary to go with them. I’m not sure if they’ll do it because I’m not sure if they’ll even acknowledge me.

"If it’a causing unbearable pain won’t they do it on the NHS? " In short- no they won't- been trying for years to get one and their argument is they can control my pain (they haven't managed it yet) and I'll be done with painful periods soon enough

"Have you had investigation in to what is causing the pain? I suffer from adenomyosis and the pain is horrific. I’ve not had much of a life for the last two years trying to deal with it and the treatment I am currently on is slowly starting to work. I’ve asked about a hysterectomy but I’ve been told I’m too young (even though I’m much older than you!). There are considerations around HRT which is why they are reluctant to do it if you are too young. I’ve been put on progestrone and had a Mirena coil fitted which has made a difference but it has taken a while to get to this point. My only recommendation is make sure you speak to someone who will go through everything with you, explore what is causing the pain and covers the ongoing treatment/medication you might need moving forward. It’s not something to be tempted going abroad for even if it is cheaper…. Good luck on your journey whatever you choose." I’ve had a lot of testing and transvaginal scans, ultrasounds etc and apparently they can’t find anything, despite diagnosing me with PCOS when I was 18? I have a family history of endometriosis on both sides-yet apparently everything is completely normal?

" You should be ok with the “one hormone” one. I’m overweight, I smoke and I’m old! And this one is apparently totally safe for me. It’s decogestrel if you want to make a note of it. Changed my life, I couldn’t even leave the house for 3 days a month. If you use it as contraception though it needs taking at roughly the same time each day. As for appointments you’ll be lucky to get face to face. They seem to be only doing phone ones now.

There is a history in my family too and even having my mum coming to a face to face appointment with me and explaining it to the GP made little difference to her opinion. My brain is too tired right now and not working properly as there is a website I want to tell you to look at which had lots of useful information on it but I can’t think what it is right now!!!!

"With the shortages in HRT at the moment it’s something you need to seriously balance up because you could go from frying pan to fire. Have you tried any of the pills - when they wouldn’t give you one did they offer anything else? Mini pill, mirena or anything? Have a look and see if there’s a sexual health or family planning clinic in your area. Those people deal with contraception and it’s side effects every day. They are much more experienced with it than the average GP in my experience. A change in pill by a knowledgable practitioner changed my periods from being something that left me needing at least one or two days annual leave every month, ruined clothing/bedding and heavy painkillers to one day of discomfort and normal levels of bleeding (and I’m a pharmacist so knew a lot myself - they just knew even more!!) " What she said! I was told to speak to my local sexual health clinic (called iCash where I am) as they could probably see me quicker than my GP but because other things were going on my GP bumped me up the list. I have also experienced problems getting my additional hormone medication and went 10 days without it which was awful so that side of things is a huge consideration. Still not remembered that website name though

"If it’a causing unbearable pain won’t they do it on the NHS? " Nope. Not until at least 30 - older if they can get away with it - unless for cancer related conditions. I wish I’d gone private. I had severe endometriosis, adenomyosis & fibroids. They moved the goal posts everytime I reached them. T is not a violent man (never even raises his voice) but even he was ready to punch my vile female Gynae. I finally got one just before my 43rd birthday - 24 years after diagnosis. J x

" It took me 3 years of solid fighting - I had to have Prostap (a prostate cancer drug) injected every 28 days to induce a chemical menopause & take HRT. But having the op totally gave me my life back. Everything was removed. I do have a small issue now but that’s due to where my endo was.

"It will be very difficult to persuade a gynaecologist to perform a hysterectomy under the age of about 40, for any reason. I've wanted one for ages because my uterus is prolapsed and held up with a silicone ring. Despite the fact it's trying to exit of its own accord, no-one will actually surgically remove it "because I might want more kids". My last pregnancy left me disabled so I do NOT want to be pregnant again! Absolutely NOT!! Now they're trying to force long acting contraception on me to continue taking my pregabalin, yet whipping my womb out would solve a multitude of issues. There ARE potential negative effects to hysterectomy, including vaginal vault prolapse later down the line, but that can be partly mitigated by securing the vaginal cuff during the surgery. However, that's not standard NHS procedure which is insane. " God, it fucking pisses me off so much, that we can’t make decisions about our own bodies! Op - I had one last year, and kept one ovary, but have gone on hrt anyway (as I is well old) and it’s been fine. Mostly an easy recovery, and don’t regret it. Happy for you to message me

"At 20 I would of thought you would find it difficult to get any GP or consultant to sign off on a full hysterectomy. There are so many other options available before you would be considered, unless it was deemed to be absolutely necessary. Counselling would likely be recommended too. No surgeon is going to give you the option to sue *should* you change your mind in later years A private hysterectomy will cost you upwards of around £7,000 if not more probably closer to £10,000 It would also kick off other health issues too. Your reproductive system is factored into how the female body works and if you mess with it then other complications will no doubt prevail. Early loss of Oestrogen - bone/skin/hair/ structure I would take some me serious advice first " Full hysterectomies are rarely done nowadays, unless post menopause and there's a good reason. They usually leave ovaries or one ovary behind for this very reason.

"Am I making the wrong choice by saving up for a hysterectomy? I’m 20- so I know I’m going to have to go private- but even then, will they even accept me? I’ve done years of research and I know this is what I want- but is it even worth trying to get one at my age? I can’t bear the pain I have any longer and I just want it gone. It’s the cause of 75% of my misery. Opinions please-is it worth waiting or just saving up and going for it? I’m going to be saving for several years, so I know that it won’t be for awhile. Or, is it better to just go on the NHS? Idk there’s so many options!! And before anyone says it-no I won’t change my mind- I don’t want kids. I don’t want my womb. I don’t want any of it. " I had a hysterectomy about 5 years ago and it’s the best decision I ever made. Although you are given morphine while you are still out I only took paracetamol when needed throughout my recovery. I wasn’t cut it was a suction job so no scars etc. The nhs will only do a hysterectomy under certain circumstances (you have to try other methods for a couple of years) go for it if it’s what you want x
