It’s quite an old quote; much like All Cops Are Bastards which has been around since the 60s. It’s also the same as ‘even a gay landlord is still a landlord’

Sorry for the lack of clarity. I have woken up sad today at many many things. One thing is how unaffordable and inaccessible decent housing is in this country. What I would like, is to live in a world where everyone has access to housing and if I have to live in a world with money, then access to *affordable* housing. The precariousness of access to good, safe housing in this country should frighten us all. Forget the money for a second. People deserve access to homes. How can we exploit housing for profit? Why? Like isn’t that sad? Doesn’t that make you sad?

It makes me very sad. We weren’t put on this planet to suffer- I often get frustrated and sad about how people have to work several jobs, use food banks, unable to afford proper housing. We shouldn’t have to live like this! We only get one life and I’ve always resented having to work for half of it.

Don’t you get violently offended if someone accidentally uses the wrong pronouns?

But calling all landlords parasites is just a friendly opinion everyone calm down

I think some landlords can be tough, but some are great. I owe my entire apprenticeship to a great landlord that treated me like family. Invited me to their bbqs, got me a present on Christmas and even let me be flexible with how much rent I paid

No, I don’t mind if someone calls me the wrong pronouns, as long as someone corrects themselves after. I mind when people are transphobic and threaten my very existence.

But why are you bringing this up on this thread? What a low and immature blow.

It’s about to get a lot worse on the upcoming recession too.

Recession hits, banks stop lending (to poor people) and the rich swoop in and claim a bunch of property

I’m very lucky to be buying my first house on a few months. Because rents are going up

Last week I told someone (not from London) how much I pay in rent (two thirds of what I make a month on a decent salary) and their eyes watered. And childcare on top of that, costs about the same. This is an unsustainable way to live. And this isn’t an attack on landlords because they’re just playing the game. I know. Lots of my family members are landlords. And I they know how I feel- we don’t have to agree. It’s just to say, what a sad state of the world that housing is that expensive, unjustifiably so often. And housing is only going to get more unaffordable. Someone on twitter said they just got notified that their rent was going up by £400. Like where are people getting an extra £400 JUST to keep a roof over their heads?

Can we not do better?

Anyways again apologies for the title of the thread- just annoyed is all. I know landlords aren’t solely to blame though I certainly don’t think they’re without blame.

I don’t want to have to be a cog under capitalism my whole life. I want to be able to actually live rather than work and then live in those 2 days a week I actually get to LIVE. I want to be able to not have to worry about money or housing or when my next meal is going to be. Yes, I know it’s a fantasy; but why can’t it happen? Why do we have to suffer? I’m proud of being working class, but why do we NEED classes? Why does there have to be a social divide? Is it the commie in me speaking or is it the fact that I’m frustrated with my own debts, lack of enjoyment in life etc. i don’t know; but I know that this isn’t a life I want to lead.

Absolutely I resent having to work to barely be able to afford to survive. To skip meals to be able to afford rent. Let’s not forget, we’re not paid in relation to the actual value of our labour. And I also believe access to shelter, a roof over your head, a hole, is a human right.

I would suggest a part of social divide stems from people saying they don't like the class system while defining themselves by it.

I don’t think you resent work then, you sound like your quite willing to work. You resent the amount of you have to work to be comfortable. You resent the value your work is “worth”

Which is fair

It’s fine that we disagree, but I am just saying I disagree massively about what we aren’t entitled to. I honestly believe that everyone is entitled to the safety of a home, clean water and food. I honestly believe that and would gladly live in a world in which my labour went towards making sure we could all afford to live with those basic human necessities. Rather than to line the pockets of selfish, greedy people.

The precariousness of access to good, safe housing in this country should frighten us all. Forget the money for a second. People deserve access to homes. How can we exploit housing for profit? Why? Like isn’t that sad? Doesn’t that make you sad?

It’s about to get a lot worse on the upcoming recession too.

Recession hits, banks stop lending (to poor people) and the rich swoop in and claim a bunch of property

I’m very lucky to be buying my first house on a few months. Because rents are going up

Lucky? Is it luck though or hard work. Hate the word lucky. Lucky is winning the lottery. "

Hmmm. I guess your right. I moved 2 years ago to find work with £0 in the bank

Now I’m putting down a 15% deposit on a 275k house.

All while renting a flat. All by myself. With zero help from anyone.

So yeah, you’re right. Fuck luck. I did this all by myself

And you know what it made me realise? It’s fucked out there for most people. It’s so hard getting on the ladder without some help. Something needs to change

It makes me very sad. We weren’t put on this planet to suffer- I often get frustrated and sad about how people have to work several jobs, use food banks, unable to afford proper housing. We shouldn’t have to live like this! We only get one life and I’ve always resented having to work for half of it.

You resent having to work to live?

Yes

How exactly do you want life to be then? Genuinely intrigued

I would suggest a part of social divide stems from people saying they don't like the class system while defining themselves by it. "

I suppose; but if I had my choice I wouldn’t be classed as working class-that’s just what I’m labelled as and as such rather than having it weaponised against me, I’m making it part of my identity. Much like how I reclaimed the slur dyke because I’m not giving it the power to hurt me. I’m proud of being working class; but I’d much rather there be no social divide at all.

Of the 11 different landlords I've had there's only one (ONE!!!) I would give a positive review to. This is where an app with a star rating would be outstanding. Get rid of estate agents let the lesser and lessee talk direct and see how well they are rated from former transactions. All landlords are parasites? Maybe not all, but most. In my experience.

Yes it’s a fantasy. We all have to work to live. Nobody is entitled to have everything handed to them on a plate.

Who are the selfish greedy people though Steve? The ones who have shed blood, sweat and tears to make something of themselves?

Yes, not all landlords are parasites; they can be wonderful people who genuinely care about their tenants. I mean it more in the whole practice of being a landlord. I don’t believe in privately owned homes as opposed to social housing for all. So landlords can be good people; but the act of being a landlord isn’t.

It’s funny your first comment was about landlords being parasites and now your asking why you can’t living in a society without working. Isn’t that by definition a parasite? Just taking from society and not giving anything back?

Definitely. Impossible for young people to get on that ladder right now. I have one here working every hour to try and get on it!

I don't know if your question was rhetorical but here's a simplified version of my theory.

Before farming became widespread nobody worked in the way we recognise it now. They put the hours in hunting and gathering for sure but nobody paid a wage to anybody at the end of the week. It's been suggested by observing the very few hunter gatherers who remain today that those people did far less in the way of labour than we do now.

Then farming became prevalent, humans being what they are began to specialise, stay in one place and rank people by what they could do and what they decided they owned...and the rest is history.

I don’t think you’re understanding what I’m saying lol. Of course, work needs to happen for things to happen. I’m perfectly okay with working in the career that I want; and I know it won’t happen and it frustrates me. But people aren’t paid for their Labour or how much work they put in.

Working is fine; but why should I have to have my whole life consumed by work? My whole childhood and teenage years it was hammered into me that one day I’m going to have to get a job and work until I retire and it scared me if I’m honest; I’m fine working, but I don’t ENJOY it. I don’t enjoy HAVING to work; but I’ll do it.

People aren’t paid what they are worth. As a trainee teacher I’m only going to get £25k…for how many hours a week? Teachers work overtime and all through the weekend. Where is my break? Yes, I know it’s demanding job; but I deserve to actually reap the fruits of my labour.

Yes it’s a fantasy. We all have to work to live. Nobody is entitled to have everything handed to them on a plate.

Who are the selfish greedy people though Steve? The ones who have shed blood, sweat and tears to make something of themselves?

In my experience they don't sweat their own blood sweat or tears.

Oh is that right?!"

Not all of them. Didn’t kylie post above that she’s a landlord? I might be assuming, but I don’t think kylie has worked herself into a landlord position. She’s been lucky enough to be gifted parents that could make that happen, and money makes money

The amount of people that turn up on building sites to buy their kids investment properties is crazy.

Imagine turning 18 and being told your parents have 5 flats all turning a profit for you to have

Money makes money

"Sorry for the lack of clarity.

You resent having to work to live?

Yes

But why; like genuinely? Why do we HAVE to work? Why was life invented so that we have to work our entire lives and then get a few years at the end of it. I know I’m getting philosophical now and I’ll just frustrate myself but idk…maybe I wasn’t made for this planet LMAOOO

Genuinely, is that a question?

I’m assuming your quite young and naive. How do you think houses get built? And food grown? Who makes your electricity? And the pipes that make water come out your taps?

People work to make that happen, so you gotta work to receive it.

It’s funny your first comment was about landlords being parasites and now your asking why you can’t living in a society without working. Isn’t that by definition a parasite? Just taking from society and not giving anything back?

No right, that’s fine

Your first comment made it sound like you wanted to live on a society comfortably without working

However after that reply, I do agree. Wages aren’t lining up with living costs.

It’s incredibly frustrating. I don’t mind working- ideally I’d have a career as an author but it’s an incredibly hard career to get into without prior contacts. But my second option has always been a teacher, and as much as I’m going to enjoy it- I’m not going to enjoy the act of working. Even when I was 16 and had a retail job I still didn’t enjoy it. Idk…it’s just not for me lol. That being said; I’ve never had benefits or anything like that (other than DSA). My ex best friend once said ‘unemployment is the best route for me’ and it made me wonder how you can live like that.

I agree with the point that labour is necessary. Because labour is required to maintain life. However I dispute the types of labour we have to do. And I resent, as I said and thicc clarified, the value of our labour. It’s massively, deliberately, undervalued. And I think there are things we should as a society ensure we all have access to. As decent human beings.

Just to note, some people can't work for very legitimate reasons.

I know that isn't what people are talking about when they say everyone has to work and contribute or they're a sponger, but it probably doesn't feel great for those who can't work to have to read those kind of unqualified statements.

My Dad came to this country with fuck all.

He worked his arse off and put his money in bricks and mortar. He didn’t take a penny out of this country and now he’s making bank in his old age sitting pretty. He runs a fair ship in my opinion and is certainly not a parasite.

I believe firmly in property ownership as well. It’s the world we live in and it’s not going to change in my lifetime.

I also believe in the necessity for decent quality social housing.

Yes definitely- technically due to my mental illness I can be deemed to have legitimate reasons not to work- I’m still going to work, but if I didn’t, I wouldn’t want to be made to feel guilty about that (not anyone here btw). It’s quite a slippery slope to ableism if I’m honest.

What a lot of people who rent don't seem to always take into account is:

Prices go up everywhere in the world all the time, yes that's shit but its not going to change anytime soon let's face it.

You get a letter through the door to say your rent will be going up by so much , yes that's crap but it's happening to everyone.

You still are not paying the full 100% bill increase like the mortgage payers or landlords are. If we don't pay them we loose our homes it's a simple as that, so the years it's taken the majority of people to get to that stage is all wasted.

To save money you could be moving location , save the difference and get your own home eventually.

Needs must and what you want for the future should take over in your mind to get to that position.

The future will never get cheaper so I don't understand why so many keep leaving it so long before they try to own a house when everything goes up in cost.

Plan early

Save as much as you physically can now and you will be better off in the long run.

And yes I do know what it's like as it's taken me 20 years to get to the house I own now and be in a good position.

Still usually skint each month though because of the bills but that won't change anytime soon.

I’m very academic hence why I’m going to be working in teaching and I’ve always had great grades etc- maybe I just have an overinflated ego where I feel my work isn’t being paid what it’s worth lol.

That being said; I ran an Etsy shop for a while and I was doing about 30 hours a week of work and only getting paid about £40 a week because of Etsy fees and postage etc- that really fucked me off because I developed carpal tunnel from it as well. I gave that shop up because my mental health was suffering but yeah- maybe that’s where some of my dislike comes from

Neither did my parents have anything. They worked bloody hard. No luck involved. None at all.

"Sorry for the lack of clarity.

You resent having to work to live?

Yes

How exactly do you want life to be then? Genuinely intrigued

Yes it’s a fantasy. We all have to work to live. Nobody is entitled to have everything handed to them on a plate.

But why; like genuinely? Why do we HAVE to work? Why was life invented so that we have to work our entire lives and then get a few years at the end of it. I know I’m getting philosophical now and I’ll just frustrate myself but idk…maybe I wasn’t made for this planet LMAOOO

Well get ready buddy.

AI and advanced robotics are gonna make huge portions of the working world jobless in the next 10-20 years.

I dunno what’s gonna happen when a huge % of the work force is forced out of jobs due to robots that work 24/7 for the cost of maintenance.

UBI probably?

It’s fine that we disagree, but I am just saying I disagree massively about what we aren’t entitled to. I honestly believe that everyone is entitled to the safety of a home, clean water and food. I honestly believe that and would gladly live in a world in which my labour went towards making sure we could all afford to live with those basic human necessities. Rather than to line the pockets of selfish, greedy people.

Who are the selfish greedy people though Steve? The ones who have shed blood, sweat and tears to make something of themselves? "

Listen, as someone with family members who have come here with literally nothing to owning property and renting it out, I appreciate it’s not easy for everyone. But, Sorry, are we not all doing the same? I’ve shed plenty of blood, PLENTY of tears, plenty of sweat, all to make something of myself. I cried plenty of tears and lived through multiple episodes to get my degree, to get a good job that pays well, to support my family. We’re all working hard. And yes, some people are greedy. The value they place on material goods means they’ll exploit others without a care in the world for the harm they do. Landlords are, generally, an example of this. The implication here that people that are better off simply because they worked harder is genuinely gross and sad to see. Wanting others to have a good affordable standard of living should not be as radical as people are making out in this thread.

Well sadly that feeling doesn’t go away. So get used to it.

That’s why we say try hard at school. So you can get a job where the money is worth it.

I gave that shop up because my mental health was suffering but yeah- maybe that’s where some of my dislike comes from "

Did you look up teachers pay before hand?

If you wanted to be paid well, you picked the wrong career path. And while I do think teachers should be paid more, and I agree that living cost and wages are a problem. You picked the low earning job.

As my dad said to me once. If a job isn’t well paid, you better fucking love it

I’m never going to agree with this. And the “gross and sad to see” comment is simply ridiculous. So yes I’m happy to agree to disagree.

Yes- I’ve always known it isn’t a very high paying job BUT I wasn’t fully aware of the hours until last year. I think the pay doesn’t reflect the hours, If I’m honest. I haven’t even started my course yet and I’ve already put in hours and hours of work.

"Just to note, some people can't work for very legitimate reasons.

I know that isn't what people are talking about when they say everyone has to work and contribute or they're a sponger, but it probably doesn't feel great for those who can't work to have to read those kind of unqualified statements. "

It really doesn't.

It's got to the stage here where people will actually bid on rental properties, whoever offers the highest rent gets the property. And the LHA isn't in line with private rent, but there's not enough social housing.

Yes- I’ve always known it isn’t a very high paying job BUT I wasn’t fully aware of the hours until last year. I think the pay doesn’t reflect the hours, If I’m honest. I haven’t even started my course yet and I’ve already put in hours and hours of work.

Well that sucks. Your young though. Change career path. Find somewhere that pays you what your worth "

In an ideal world I’d be paid £1000 a minute and only work 2 minutes a month. Perfect (don’t worry, I’m joking. I know that’ll never happen in a million years. Unless…)

"Of the 11 different landlords I've had there's only one (ONE!!!) I would give a positive review to. This is where an app with a star rating would be outstanding. Get rid of estate agents let the lesser and lessee talk direct and see how well they are rated from former transactions. All landlords are parasites? Maybe not all, but most. In my experience.

"Sorry for the lack of clarity.

You resent having to work to live?

Yes

How exactly do you want life to be then? Genuinely intrigued

Yes it’s a fantasy. We all have to work to live. Nobody is entitled to have everything handed to them on a plate.

I’m never going to agree with this. And the “gross and sad to see” comment is simply ridiculous. So yes I’m happy to agree to disagree. "

So you genuinely believe that people are better off simply because they work harder?

I actually agree with Steve here

You can’t honestly tell me that these kids that got born into a rich family, given a house + rental properties, went to the best school, no university debts, parents had all the right connections etc is better off through only hard work

These poor kids born into absolute poverty in dysfunctional families. They just had to work harder right? Then they’d be fine

I believe in both. Hard work helps, but you don’t choose what you get born into.

Perfect example on this thread is kylie talking about how hard it is being a landlord. Sounds awful, having parents rich enough to get you a rental property to turn you some cash

Awful ain’t it Steve? Why didn’t you get born into a rich family and get gifted a rental property? You didn’t work hard enough obviously. You deserve nothing.

This idea that life cannot change is absolutely hilarious. Money isn’t real bro. Capitalism is man made. Of course it can change. I recognise that global capitalism is probably too far gone for any country to successfully attempt any alternative but it’s not crazy to be anti capitalist or imagine a world where you can exist outside of capitalism.

Absolutely I resent having to work to barely be able to afford to survive. To skip meals to be able to afford rent. Let’s not forget, we’re not paid in relation to the actual value of our labour. And I also believe access to shelter, a roof over your head, a hole, is a human right. "

Well obviously but I have been talking also about people that are tenants. Like me. Like my friends. Like plenty of others. That have shed the same blood sweat and tears to get what we have - unaffordable rents, jobs that exploit our labour for maximum profit, childcare that’s unaffordable. People that, you know, go hungry so that they can pay rent and childcare. They work every bit as hard as the landlords that own their homes. I have worked every bit as hard as my mum, who bought her first home when I was a baby working a retail job lmao. Or my Nan who came here from Jamaica and has been able to afford multiple homes. It’s not the lack of hard work all the time. On a 30k salary out of university living in London, how many years, living a life that doesn’t involve starving yourself or not enjoying yourself, if ‘hard work’ does it take to be able to afford a house?

Terra Firma

Some crazy comments on this thread!

I'm a landlord and I rent 1 house. I made choices early on to study in a profession I considered to be longterm and high earning, it paid off for me maybe 20 years ago. Until that time I was saving, scrimping by and working to gain experience. I worked out that pay rises for long serving employees were never great, but leaving for a new job every 2 years bumped up that salary considerably. All my choices!

I purchased a house to rent with the idea that I would sell the house should I ever need the money, or sell it to become part of my retirement fund. I have had tenants that wrecked the house after living in it for 12 years, I did not put the rent up in all that time. I now have tenants that are notching up year 10 and again I have not put up the rent. House is kept in great order and they are happy, probably really happy with cost of living crisis effecting us.

The tenants that have lived in my house, couldn't get a mortgage that allowed them live in the area, with the size of property and location. I could, so made the choice to invest and rent, I will only reap the benefits of this choice when I decide to sell.

Life is all about choice.

I’m not twisting your words. That’s what I think Steve was getting at, unless I’m wrong

I don’t think he’s saying working doesn’t matter

He’s saying that sometimes all the hard work won’t fix a shitty situation. So this idea that “is you worked hard enough you’d be fine” is insulting

And that’s from someone that worked hard enough all by myself. I still understand that some people are fucked no matter what. And some people couldn’t mess up if they tried because the privilege of who and where they were born into is too strong

I've rented four properties and every landlord was a greedy wanker who only cared about money.

I have known plenty of people who are landlords, and they are also massive wankers.

I'd say most landlords are wankers tbh.

Literally hating landlords is not that deep. But what I will say is I was on fab after George Floyd was murdered and there were racism threads like everyday, taught me a lot about navigating the forums. "

That’s absolutely disgusting. Even Facebook and Twitter was bad enough and I had to stay off those because people are just utterly vile. I’m starting to learn how to navigate it as a lesbian trans person- which shouldn’t have to happen. People should just be bloody nice to each other

"All Landlords Are Parasites cheers for the sweeping statement glad you're not one of my tenants but enjoy

Isn’t this world wonderful where we’re all allowed different opinions?

if you dont care as per some of your replies further down. why should others care if they dont like transpeople or care for your existence / pronounce or even remotely attempt to correct themselves in the slightest ,, that goes both ways right

If the government truly wanted to help people become property owners they wouldn;t be talking about this deposit scheme where you would stop getting benefits before you could afford a deposit (they are out of touch)

They would set up a scheme where the government would offer to underwrite the mortgage of anyone who can prove they have been paying their rent in full for at least 10 years.

Mortgage payments are less than rent. and rent payments are the primary reason people cannot save a deposit.

"Sorry for the lack of clarity. "

Well I agree about every time communism has supposedly been enacted in the world (although Cuba gets a bad rap they have a stellar health and education system, world leading in fact)

The problem is Communism in the world has been corrupted by corrupt people. Just like how capitalism has reached the state we are in now, because of corrupt and greedy people

I am a big fan of somewhere just short like a Socialist Republic/Democracy.

I dunno Steve. I do find it difficult to understand sometimes. You mention childcare, I have an 11 year age gap because I couldn’t afford another one. I accept that things can come crashing down and go wrong after people have kids but how many have them when they can’t afford them? Lots do. I didn’t.

I moved away from friends and family to afford a better life. It was hard. How many are willing to do that?

I gave up a well paid job because I had a disabled child. I could have not worked and claimed lots of benefits but I worked hard to set up my own business from nothing. Worked through the night whilst the kids slept most of the time. How many would do that?

So no. I don’t have much sympathy for those who want to live life and resent working.

Still missing a very valid point, if you can't afford the rent in an area you live in now and be comfortable that you can pay all your bills, have food and childcare costs sorted and be happy. Then move to an area where it is cheaper.

Older generations could buy houses years ago from what now seem like silly money, my nans house was £10k in London, but she earnt barely nothing in wages and still went without food to feed her kids.

Your bills won't get cheaper in the future, like any of ours so plan now to change it surely?

Manchester (he/him)

I can respect both sides of this and it’s fairly easy to see who has money and who doesn’t.

The way that I see it is that ten years ago, hard work paid dividends. I remember when £30,000 was a bloody good wage, enough to buy a property and live comfortably in most areas. Now that’s not even enough to keep the lights on.

Everyone at the bottom is feeling the pinch, everyone is seeing the pound of flesh being exacted over and over by every single living cost and it’s hard, especially when the line between have and have nots seems to be getting wider and wider with every incremental price rise.

I don’t resent the landlords for the prices, I don’t resent the tenants for complaining, it’s a fact of capitalism that everyone wants something from everyone else. What I do resent is the fundamental lack of respect and entrenchment of opinion that gets thrown around as soon as someone sees an opinion that *might* have something to do with them. Not just on this thread but every thread.

The complete lack of understanding is staggering at times.

To paraphrase Steve: People; amirite?

I have worked in the property industry for 8 years and in my experience there is a complete mixture. We have landlords who we have to fight to make essential repairs while others will do everything to keep their tenants happy. Guess which make the most money overall?

Personally I am lucky to have an amazing landlady. She brings wine whenever we have to do any business together and we always end up chatting for hours over a few bottles.

Todays route to home ownership is nothing like it was for previous generations.

1975 the average house cost was £10,388 (£97,884 adjusted for inflation).

Now it is £260,771 or 2.6 times the adjusted price of 1975.

At the average wage (£3,744) in 1975 it would take 2.77 years salary to buy that average house.

Today the average salary (£31,096) would take 8.3 years (3x as longer than 1975).

Just like how I don’t have sympathy for landlords Omg we’re so alike

Not really. I don’t resort to personal insults and branding a group of people as parasites. "

I think it’s very difficult for a lot of people on here to take the moral high ground regarding sweeping statements, especially when quite a few people make generations and then defend their right to their opinions and language usage when challenged.

One might accuse them of double standards

Better off than the people who don’t want to work or resent working or aren’t willing to work. Yes I do.

"I can respect both sides of this and it’s fairly easy to see who has money and who doesn’t.

One of my daughters is a landlady. She certainly isn't a parasite. The rent she charges just covers the mortgage and council tax and insurance. She certainly isn't making a profit. She's a hardworking advanced nurse practitioner. She moved out of the house when she met her partner (now husband). My own experience of a private landlord though is very negative but that was just just him

"

This is a valid point but moving away from your family, is not the easiest. Also not being funny but as a Black person, moving to another area of the country isn’t a decision you can make without considering many of the cultural impacts- moving to a place where you’re one of a handful, where your child might be treated differently, where you can’t even get a haircut, or get cultural foods. People underestimate the impact that stuff has, despite research. People always just want you to get on with it. And I appreciate for some, it’s a no brainer. It isn’t for everyone. Mate, I’ve not gone on holiday to some places because of what I’ve heard about the experiences are like for people like me. Living is going to be exactly the same. For me, the idea that you should have to move miles away from safety and support is insane. But I hear it.

If we really want to complain, let’s include banks

The hoops they make buyers jump through so they can make profit on the loan

Got an email this morning. The bank made an admin mistake and send me the wrong email

Due to their mistake, the cost of my mortgage repayments are going up by between £85–100 a month

And that’s not paying off the house. That’s the interest

So due to their fault, they earn an extra 85–100 off me per month.

Nothing dodgy About that

"All Landlords Are Parasites "

She is right, and here is why. It's all just another way by which moneyed (and by extension landed) individuals can extract unearned profits, simply through ownership.

For instance, say a person lived on land that was not owned by anybody. They could chop trees down and sell the wood, receiving 100% of the produce with the only cost being the the effort taken to extract the resource. Now if that land was owned by somebody else, the owner can claim a portion of the produce as well as a portion of the revenue created, while expanding zero effort.

All this is on top of taking up housing stock that could be used as social housing and for single home buyers, pushing up house prices rents in general. Hopefully you all know how I feel about this by now.

"Amirite?

Who knew that one word could cause such a furore!

I think it was me that caused the beef by stating my opinion lmao…you’d think people had never met a commie before

Do you really consider yourself a commie or is that a meme joke kinda thing?

I’d think you’re more of a socialist right?

You do know the history of communism, right?

Yes, it was a joke…kind of

Kind of how? Like I think socialism is a legitimate idea

I think communism is directly responsible for millions of deaths

Eh…idk. I’m kinda a communist, kinda not. I think people would consider me a communist because of someone of my views; but I think that’s because they see my views as radical when really they aren’t. I wouldn’t say I’m a communist in a tradition sense; I’m more of a socialist.

But that being said; capitalism is responsible for millions of deaths too. As Simone De Beauvoir said, ‘I was made for an entirely different planet altogether.’ I don’t think this planet is for me lol (that part I’m not joking about)

Capitalism is also responsible for the highest levels of living standards this world has ever seen in health care, technology, education, endless other areas

Communism is responsible for some of the biggest human rights violations in history.

I’m just gonna take the part where you says your a socialist.

I don’t think you truly understand what it means to be communist or the results of it. I think it’s just a catchy thing people say these days. A meme you’ve fallen for.

Personally, I think a mixture of regulated capitalism and socialism is the answer. "

Fully agree. The Scandanavian model seems to work pretty well. There's massive problems with capitalism but people thinking Communism is the solution is like having a headache and thinking the only solution is to chop off your head

Well yes and no, the communism we have experienced in the world is very flawed, but it is not a true representation of what communism is. It has been marred by the human factor.

I am also in favour of the scandinavian model of a Socialist Government that places limits on what the Capitalist machine can get away with.

But I also think there is more room to do even more than what they are doing right now.

The main thing is to ensure it isnt a select few with privilege running the show.

Somewhere in Co. Down

I rent and always have done since I moved out of home when I was in my teens. I have never been able to afford to buy a home so I rent.

I have had some amazing landlords who fixed things when they were broken and were were genuinely great and gave my deposit back with no issues when I moved out.

I have also had real crap landlords like one who flooded my bedroom when fixing a water tank problem I had to sleep in my living room for a week and for no discount or apology. Or one who did nothing about a rat infestation that I had to deal with. And then had to fight to get my deposit back from there. Or the one who decided it was okay to creep about and look at my lingerie in my cupboards in my bedroom .Another who moved a creep in cos he wanted more rent from the house and couldn't understand why we weren't happy that a complete stranger moved in, he was a creep who would be right outside the bathroom any time you had a shower or outside the bedroom if we had a partner over. He was another who didn't want to give the deposit back.

And that is one of my biggest issues with landlords I'm a good tenant I pay my rent and keep the house clean I have never ever caused any damage and I've quite often painted houses (with their permission) but in all my years renting I've only had a small handful of landlords who gave back my deposit without an battle. They have claimed they don't have it to hand or that I never paid it (I always have proof that I have paid one though). But they still always try and hold onto it as though it is their money. And that is one of the most infuriating parts of renting.

Are race problems really thaf much better in london, and worse everywhere else, that you wouldn’t move for a substantially better quality of life, financially?

I’ve got quite a few friends living in Manchester. It’s very affordable. Is it deadly racist there too?

I don’t want to doubt your experiences, I’m just trying to understand

Are race issues that much better in London you’ll pay 2/3s of your income to live there?

Vs living in Manchester where you’d be paying half as much?

I’m really struggling with that concept.

Like if it was London or Cornwall, sure. Pretty white in Cornwall. They really don’t like outsiders too.

But is it that bad everywhere else, except London, that’s it’s impossible to live there?

I recognise the privileged position life has put me in. I’m low-key going to inherit property. Great. Maybe that’s why I am not killing myself to be able to afford to buy a house. I’m not trying to build an empire. And I’m not trying to be a landlord. The worst thing we ever did was convince people that access to basic human necessities were things you needed to be able to ‘afford’ and make one’s ability to do that dependent on what (likely) an exploitative employer values your labour as. What a joke. People deserve access to housing. They deserve it. In what kind of hell would anyone be carefree about people and children not having access to these things?

One of the biggest mistakes was introducing the right to buy imo! I've lived here since 1975 and very few are still council! Mine being one! My brother and son both said they would help me buy it over the years at one point could get 60% of the price but said no as against my principles my brother said when u die and it goes back to council who they put in it will likely buy it! I said cool but I'm not interested ! Had they built to replace to help peeps get on property ladder if that's what they wanted that would b cool! But that was never gonna happen! And why we have such a lack of social housing now x

"All Landlords Are Parasites cheers for the sweeping statement glad you're not one of my tenants but enjoy

Isn’t this world wonderful where we’re all allowed different opinions? . Interesting. So what would you have in place of landlords ? "

How about access to affordable, sustainable social housing

Or access to housing for everyone that doesn’t cost 2 thirds of your monthly income

"Sorry for the lack of clarity.

You resent having to work to live?

Yes

Surely working affords you the lifestyle you have? If you don’t like it change your job and if your not willing to do that then don’t complain

Not for everyone. If it were that simple there wouldn't be people slogging their arses off to make their landlords money.

"One of the biggest mistakes was introducing the right to buy imo! And why we have such a lack of social housing now x"

Agree with this. The right to buy should never have happened.

Burnleyish (She/They)

If I ever find myself with a large amount of money I have a whole plan for a social housing scheme aimed at helping people get onto the property ladder.

5 year tennancy with half the rent being savings towards a deposit.

Credit union style mortgage company on site, providing mortgages to Tennants only

First home purchased from the social housing scheme with the co diction that on sale or death it must only be sold back to the scheme (at current market value) to ensure homes are available to buy for Tennants...

But before that I have a famy property that I don't really want to sell for sentimental/family reasons but is not suitable for me from a disability point of view.

But to keep it I'd have to rent it out. And I am not sure how I feel about that even though I'd want to be an ethical, fair and hopefully nice landlord.

"Fully agree.

But what is a true representation of Communism? Complete equality amongst everyone where no one person has anymore than another? The Khmer Rouge did a pretty good job of that in Cambodia but wasn't exactly a great place to live

I was agreeing that a different socialist model is better. But peoples view of communism en masse is clouded by western propoganda and things that are not communist being called communist, that is all I am saying

"

Ye sorry sounded a bit more antagonistic than I intended. In my opinion like the guy I quoted said, well regulated Capitalism with strong and well funded social programmes is the best idea. Everyone should have an equal shot at life regardless of what background they're from. However I don't believe the aim should be fully equality of outcome. I don't want me not being a CEO to mean I have to use food banks and can't afford heating or healthcare but equally think there has to be an incentive for working hard

Life is what YOU make it? No such thing as luck bar winning the lottery?

This frustrates me as it’s simplification gone bananas. No one is saying people don’t work hard and that working hard doesn’t exist - what is important to note is privilege and your starting points/contextual environment in which you’re striving. Some people are lucky in their starting point and contextual environment and that plays to their advantage as they work hard. Others have more barriers placed upon them through no fault of their own - luck of the draw.

You resent having to work to live?

Yes

How exactly do you want life to be then? Genuinely intrigued

Yes it’s a fantasy. We all have to work to live. Nobody is entitled to have everything handed to them on a plate.

In my experience they don't sweat their own blood sweat or tears."

That's the problem with extrapolating your experience to the whole country/world

Mr

" So you genuinely believe that people are better off simply because they work harder?

Better off than the people who don’t want to work or resent working or aren’t willing to work. Yes I do.

Still missing a very valid point, if you can't afford the rent in an area you live in now and be comfortable that you can pay all your bills, have food and childcare costs sorted and be happy. Then move to an area where it is cheaper.

Older generations could buy houses years ago from what now seem like silly money, my nans house was £10k in London, but she earnt barely nothing in wages and still went without food to feed her kids.

Your bills won't get cheaper in the future, like any of ours so plan now to change it surely?

I honestly don't get why the colour of my skin and yours seems to warrant what you believe goes on in all areas we live in.

I have had just as much racist abuse in my life and at schools in London where I grew up for being at that time the "white kid" in the class.

I have loads of different coloured family members, none of us see half the problems that you always say "might" happen.

Everyone gets shit thrown at them in life regardless of what coloured skin you have. We all get the same comments SOMETIMES thrown our way, it has nothing to do with how other areas are now, it's a small minority of people who do it, you get that everywhere, rich or poor, expensive countries, poor countries.

You can't live thinking the "what may happen" next all the time.

Multi cultural shops and supermarkets are virtually popping up everywhere now.

The whole point of the thread has nothing to do with colours of people's skin.

Anyone that wants a better life you do everything to get it, if that means moving out of your comfort zone then do it, if not for your sake it's for that of your child(ren)

Also, if you can afford a holiday you're already in a better position than I am as a "homeowner".

I've not had one in probably 10 years now....

Damn not even in real work and your complaining already? You are in for a very rude awakening when it starts

Around 5 years in are when the big “I can’t do this forever” freak outs start. You started early

Then they calm down. But they flare up again in the winter

You’ll learn to love it eventually. The endless grind. The slow and steady march towards death. It’s relaxing

Certainly doesn't feel that way right now. I've been working my way up my career ladder since I graduated. I'm now two grades higher in 5 years but honestly I feel financially no better off for it. We're still really struggling with scrimping and saving to even be able to afford a percentage of a property and every year it takes the rent only goes up as well as the rest of the bills. The only time I felt even somewhat financially comfortable was during the pandemic when I was working 6 days a week up to 11 hours a day.

Okay, teaching - I'm going to be brutally honest and say it's fucking hard work. HARD. There's no such thing as an easy ride in teaching. Hopefully you've done your research and spoken to current teachers before committing to the profession. Also, the wages are pretty shite, especially in the first few years.

Are you working yet? I thought you'd mentioned before that you're a student?

Not yet; but I have a career lined up as a trainee teacher and I have a forensics degree so if I was to go into either of them they are both very demanding hours. I have worked in the past though; in retail and as a cleaner.

Yeah- unfortunately even when I was interviewed I was told how hard it’s going to be I’m really looking forward to it as English is my passion so I can’t wait to teach it-not looking forward to the hours though. I’m worried about burnout as I’m mentally ill so things affect me quite differently than others-but honestly I’m sure I’ll be okay. Hopefully I can enjoy it; and if not, there’s always other things I suppose lol.

"Sorry for the lack of clarity.

It’s about to get a lot worse on the upcoming recession too.

Recession hits, banks stop lending (to poor people) and the rich swoop in and claim a bunch of property

I’m very lucky to be buying my first house on a few months. Because rents are going up

Lucky? Is it luck though or hard work. Hate the word lucky. Lucky is winning the lottery. "

It is a bit of both, right place, right time, right skills. I vaguely remember reading about high level CEO and other ‘professional’ performance, it turned out hard work (productivity?) had helped but wasn’t an essential quality. No one ever gets there by hard work alone, there’s always a helping hand in one way or another.

Out of curiosity, how did you obtain a degree at 20? Did you go to uni early? Or is it a two year degree? Genuinely interested.

I appreciate what you're saying but I'm not sure you're really in a position to say it yet. I've been working since I was 14, first as a Saturday girl for a family friend's business, then a proper retail job around my A Levels and I worked all through uni too. But working to build a career is a completely different beast, although rewarding in ways other than a salary.

If you've been struggling with the idea of work before even really starting I'd recommend re-evaluating your mindset towards it tbh - you're far too young to have such an outlook!!

My stepson bought his first house recently. He has worked hard all his life, worked difficult and at times very dangerous jobs, so yeah, hard work pays off. However, he was also very lucky. He was lucky that his mother and I spent a lot of time and effort supporting him through his teen years giving him experiences and opportunities that not many kids get - these have definitely played a part in the him getting the job he now has. He is lucky because when he was looking for a house there was one available in the right area on one of those first time buyer schemes on a new estate. He was lucky because he simply couldn't afford his rent and to save for the deposit needed but I was able to "give" him the money in order for him to secure the mortgage.

Hard work absolutely is necessary for most but I think those of us who are relatively successful in life are too quick to dismiss the role that luck plays. To use your lottery example, everyone living in a western society, with good health, stable loving home, reasonable genetic component to their intelligence etc etc has enjoyed lucky odds that are actually very similar to the odds of winning the lottery.

merseyside

I became a landlord many years ago when my daughter went to university and needed accommodation.

Most we viewed I wouldn't let our dog sleep in, so it was easier to renovate a place and make it safe, welcoming, affordable and for us to be contactable.

Was an easy process, never had a problem with any students, apart from the usual stuff.

Always found the students to be lovely and we have sometimes become the contact for worried parents.

Even have an Italian guy still send us cards, great to see he has gone on to have a nice life.

Still have the original place.

Am I a bastard, don't really care what you think of me, I know what I'm like and that suits me.

Did bring a smile to my face when on holiday a guy in a bar made the statement that it should be illegal for people in the UK to own more than one property.

I just shrugged, never told him our circumstances and we had some great days and nights with this couple.

Wonder if they had known would they still have enjoyed our company.

Like to think so.

East London

Housing Benefit enabled landlords to up their rents, back in the 80s. They knew that councils would pay when people took low paid jobs and claimed Housing Benefit.
