"Mad" Jack Churchill. A Royal Army Colonel who fought in World War II with a longbow and a broadsword, escaped two different concentration camps, played bagpipes in a trench while being surrounded on all sides by enemy soldiers, and lamented that the war was over because it meant he couldn't kill Nazis anymore.

"You might want to clarify which Stuart Hall, Steve.

Er, yes, I think that might be a VERY good idea. The iconic presenter of the hit 1970s 'It's a Knockout' TV show experienced a dramatic fall from grace in 2013. That is certainly not 'your' Stuart Hall.

Too many. But Nikola Tesla, Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo were ridiculously ahead of their times and such absolute enigmas we may probably never know the reach of their impact.

Nah I’m on about the Black sociologist Stuart Hall. Love him very much he’s inspired me.

Some great suggestions here - I’m forwarding Nellie Bly, look at her investigations into the treatment of supposedly “crazy” women in asylums

Lady Jane grey - obsessed with her as a kid, stubborn, outspoken and brave a queen for 9 days executed amid the whole catholic/Protestant Tudor mess. Dignified and stoic to the end

Fleming's contribution to penicillin as an actual useful drug is overstated. Yes, he observed it and named it, but he was not involved in purifying it and working out how to produce it in quantities useful for therapy. That honour goes to Howard Florey and Ernest Chain. Woefully under appreciated scientists in the penicillin story.

When studied Turing machine as part of my introduction to computer science I always had a great respect for this man. Its such a shame that the Enigma code breaker was prosecuted because he was a gay.

Fleming lived very close to where I live and we went to the same school. Albeit a couple of years apart.

In the west.

I have read a bit about Admiral Lord Cochrane. He was in 4 different navys, a mercenary, politician, served some time in jail for a stock exchange fraud and he was the inspiration for CS Forrester's Horatio Hornblower.
