News that the base camp for Mount Everest is being moved because it is literally on a melting glacia where crevasses keep appearing. They are moving to dry land with no ice. Tom wonders if one day, Everest will have no snow or ice and it will be a gentle stroll to the top like Mount Snowdon ..

Yes, the ice is melting. No, it won't be a gentle stroke like snowdon, the Himalayas and Everest are getting higher

an 18.800 meter gentle stroll that requires oxygen to achieve ok .

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

They're getting less snowy, not less steep.

There's a shitload more to climbing everest than popping on some snow shoes and gloves....

In earlier times they wore ts and didn't Brian Blessed conquer it without oxygen....

It's training that is needed

If sea levels rise then surely Everest will be lower

The Himalayas are being formed by two giant plates colliding so they are getting higher.

I like how they call it base camp but it's at over 5,000m up.

Um, no it isn't.

If you're in a swimming pool and walk into 3' water are you suddenly only 3' tall?

Still won't a gentle stroll at almost 9,000m above sea level

Highest I climbed was 5,416m (not on Everest) and it was hard enough to breathe then...

No, because Everest is not measured at sea level. You are already at a very high altitude at the base of the mountain.

Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain from base to peak at more than 33,500 feet [10,210 meters]....so sea levels come into play here, but not with Everest.

He may have done it without ADDITIONAL oxygen.

It’ll be nice if they put a cable car in. Cafe at the top, take in the views.

It'll be a doddle via wheelchair. Once I get my new off-road tyres, I'll be up and down and home in time for tea

Could you fit a winch?
