What do you wear?

I’m not an idiot, (shhh, don’t reply to that bit!) so forgive me for asking this question. I’ve not had a job interview since last century. True story. And I have one on Friday.

It’s for a driving job. Full time, I’m not bothered if I get it or not as I’ve got other options. But what do I wear?

I’d always say pants shirt and tie. But for a driving job? In this weather?

Can you go smart casual as we are now in 2022?

What’s the general consensus?

I work in HR. My advice is

Collared shirt - white or blue.

Trousers.

Smart shoes.

In this weather don’t wear a tie. You can be a bit more informal and it’s usual to see ties even in job interviews these days.

Main thing - eye contact. Smile. Take your time answering.

There’s an adage that says ‘dress for the job you want’ so if you see yourself moving up the ladder with this firm I’d suggest going smarter.

I think the tie has had its day but a suit and open necked (1 button, not to the navel!) shirt looks smart but relaxed. Also if you’re hot you can lose the jacket, if the pressure leads to a bit of a sweat you can use that to cover any patches.

It’s about the details, you can look a bag of nails in a poorly fitting suit and scruffy shoes and a lot better in a pair of jeans, we’ll pressed shirt and polished shoes.

I'd agree with Glowupdoll - smart pants and shoes, shirt, not necessarily a tie.

Clean and neat rather than overly formal is the way I expect candidates to look, but if in doubt go smarter.

The last interview I did I actually rang someone who worked there and asked. They said go in casual clothes.

I wore a hoodie and jeans and another man was in a suit and I thought I was never getting it. I’ve been there 7 years and I’ve never seen the man in the suit again.

Tell the interviewer you need to squeeze them in right after work, so you'll be in your work attire- then you can wear whatever you want really.

I interviewed for my current role in a T-shirt and scruffy strides (not that they could see the trousers and it was a teams interview), but they knew in advance i was at work, so it wasnt important

As others have said. Dress smart but not over the top. Just my opinion. You dress and act for the life you want. Be it your job or the lifestyle you want.

100%agree, I'd be carrying a jacket that goes with the shirt and trousers; I'd have no intention of wearing it but I think it completes the outfit and suggests that you would've worn it, had it been cooler.

So thats why they looked at me funny in Walmart when I asked for pants with a 30inch leg.

I know they called knickers - panties. But didn’t know pants.

I try to always ask HR or the contact I have the dress code.

If I'm told completely casual (jeans and hoodie) is fine, I dress up a little and go more smart casual, if smart casual I go casual business etc (up to full business attire obviously).
