Attaching music to people

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

I absolutely love music and tend to listen to a lot everyday. Anyway, does anyone else seem to attach certain songs to situations or people? Maybe people you are getting involved romantically?

And I’m not talking about music that they might like, more like.. music that somehow seem to fit them and the situation you are in with them?

I do it all the times and sometimes , I ended up resenting certain songs because it reminds me of them and the situation back then. And I need to press skip

What’s an album or songs that are currently maybe defining your year at the moment?

Mine is Taylor Swift Lover (the whole album), and already attached some songs to some people

Nope, I associate songs with memories more than people. Sometime I won't have heard that song while in that moment but just have it stuck my head the song is now attached to that memory

I attach songs to circumstances.

I associate songs with memories.

This why I hardly listen to music anymore, it makes me far too emotional.

I do at times. For a while I had the intro to Blind by Korn attached to me by others...

I loved this album, but there's one track I cannot listen to without getting tearyeyed. Its probably the most heartbreaking song anyone would hear if it's affected them.

I think an emotion can be found in pretty much any song, happiness, loss, sadness, elation, need to dance, euphoria etc

I find people who feel nothing from music very confusing, there is pretty much nothing that can’t be solved with a song

It evokes memories, reminds you of youth, that one gig where everyone was chanting back at the band, where all these strangers in one room for just a moment were like one, it’s like a therapy in my opinion xx

I feel much the same way as you do Kylie and JAG. Music is a huge trigger for memories and emotions through both associations and personal connections, so there are quite a few songs that I just can’t listen to because they remind me of situations or people

I’ve often come across an album at a particular time in my life that somehow allows me to process and understand what I’m going through more. I tend to listen to it over and over for a few weeks, and then move on. Happy, sad or difficult times. I trust that the next album is waiting for me!!

It's lovely to read you again Kylie.

Yes, I do attach songs to people, I'm another who thought it was weird I did that. I can tell when I really like someone because they get a song - platonic or otherwise.

Sometimes I listen to a particular song and it evokes such a strong response, the person becomes inexplicably linked to the song. I do it with lots of things. People. Events. Places.

There's not any song I can't listen to because even if things didn't last at one point there was a happy memory attached and I like to smile and think of that.

Mine's LMFAO's Sexy And You Know It

Not a massive fan of the song but it takes me back to my post-graduate days when life was just so carefree and fun. In the club we went to everyone would stop and do the 'wiggle' bit. Dancers, drinkers, bar staff, security, everyone would just wiggle and it makes me both giggle at the fun we had but makes me a little melancholy as those best of times will never happen again.

I'm exactly the same, huge swathes of my music collection plus songs on the radio are now completely off limits.

Yes, certain sogs remind me of people, pr times in my life. Music is evocative, and I can turn my mood around completely, from melancholy to happiness, if I am able to just listen x
