Carrying on with the pride month threads

For me; I was 12. I realised I was lesbian at 12 and came out at 13. I ended up hiding it for several years after being outed and facing bullying. Identified as bisexual from age 14-18 but never felt happy with it as it just didn’t fit me. Officially accepted myself at 20 and came out (but now I’m back exploring )

What age did you realise you were LGBT?

I always knew, I really fancied my year five teacher and had crushes/attraction to female friends from a young age. I was fortunate that I grew up with a Mum who never commented on sexuality so I was a teenager before I realised that being attracted to more than just the opposite sex wasn’t the norm! I met my husband when I was 18 so I hadn’t seriously explored relationships with females, (something that may well change as obviously we’re on here!) I did always identify as bisexual but I would say to people that it wasn’t as simple as that, my sexuality wasn’t relevant because I’m in a monogamous relationship but for me attraction has always been about the vibe I get from someone, it’s their attitude and aura. About two years ago the TikTok algorithm got me and I realised there’s a word for how I work - I’m Pansexual. I could be attracted to absolutely anyone regardless of their sex or gender, it doesn’t matter to me how they identify or what they present as. Attraction goes far deeper than physical appearance for me. It’s hard to explain to others and most people don’t get it and some will tell me I’m still bisexual. Having that thing to identify myself was actually really freeing and was another step in me finding my true self and being happy with who I am.

about 20 years ago. the internet gave me the tools to finally get to grips with my bisexuality.

i always was but i had no words, no context, no positive information to draw from for so long.

not going to pretend it was easy before; tore me up, for years.

i knew plenty of gay people back then and when i was younger, never had a homophobia outwards or inwards just knew i wasn't gay because i always and still do loved women. and inside knew i Also wanted, needed something sexual with men

the prevailing ideas then and probably still now was that bi was just gay in denial amongst other things. being kinda stubborn and contrary i couldn't take the 'gay' step knowing it would 'prove' that erroneous 'fact'.

Anyhoo, so yes, early thirties but now I've found my own path, my own terms of my sexuality it's still quite disheartening knowing how deep the prejudice against bisexuality in men holds, how it drives us dark places, how hard it is to escape the cliches.

I'm not sure I have yet, to be honest. I never had any romantic or sexual urges growing up. I toyed with the idea that I might be asexual for a while but I decided not to let life experiences pass me by. From there, I'm just going with the flow and seeing what, if anything, I like.

When you're not really sure you've got much of a sexuality, bisexual seemed like the least misleading option so I went with that when I signed up. (Sidenote: anyone else find Fab's gender/sexuality options super fucking limited?)

I agree that people shouldn't *have* to worry about coming out any more. Yet, I also know a number of people who found the almost ritualistic aspect of it to be quite useful.

The sexuality tick box is limited but pointless. I think there's no need for it at all.

'Looking for' is more relevant on a site like this.
