So this month I hit the big 30, seriously where do the years go! Even though I walk like an adult, talk like an adult and have a bank account like an adult, I'm still a big kid at heart

So it got me wondering..

What are the most rewarding things about getting older? What comes with age and experience? Are you happier the older you get or is it all downhill from here?

I think you become more comfortable with who you are as a person as you get older and care less about pleasing everyone you meet. It's easier to accept that there are some people for you and others who aren't. That's what I've learned so far anyway

In all seriousness, my take is that getting older isn’t what people think it is. It doesn’t make you wiser or happier. Life experience does that to you. Plenty of people have had lives that haven’t taught them anything by the time they’re 30/40 years old. I know young people that have figured life out and I’m like- how tf have you managed that already. Teach me

So, I'll start at the 30s then. I guess that was the time I realised that I'd never be an international sports star. Also perhaps my chance at following my university career of being a marine biologist was probably not going to happen. I somehow found myself working in IT, which was probably lucky as I'm sure it pays a lot more. Scuba diving has remained of my marine ambitions. About this time I noticed that teenaged girls no longer really interested me sexualy.

My 40s, I bought a motorbike (still got it...more on it later). I also bought a saxophone, on the basis that I'd always wanted to play and if I didn't do it now, it probably would never happen. Ladies in their 20s began to have less appeal to me.

50s, I got the saxophone out the attic on the basis that if I didn't do it now, it was never going to happen. I took up triathlon in my late 50s, a silly sport to take up at that age, but I can't really say that sensible decisions have always ruled my life. I put the bike in the garage on the basis that I was going to kill myself if I didn't. Ladies in their 30s still were attractive, which I guess I didn't expect going on the past.

60s (i just got here), I'm considering getting the motorbike out the garage, but I did my day skipper sailing course and bought a share in a yacht instead, sailing currently competes with scuba diving and triathlon now as my main hobby, I have no idea where the saxophone is, it's probably in the attic again.

For anyone wondering, I'm as interested in sex as I ever was, I still enjoy enthusiastic ladies, and I find that those who are that way inclined, much prefer to lie over the lap of a mature gentleman, than that of a teenager

I hated getting older and thought reaching 30 was it but then realised when I hit 40 that my 30s were great even better than my twenties and hitting 40 was the end...then I hit 50.

In summary age really is just a number and it's all about being young in mind and heart but don't try to be hip as that really doesn't work either

The only other thing I find with getting older is that I shout at the TV more.. especially when Mrs Brown's Boys is on....uh oh I just triggered myself even saying it

I agree, life experience paves the way for most of us. I don't think anyone can truely have life figured out especially as we don't know what's round the corner.

I wish I could take the mind I have now and transfer it to my 20 something year old self! I feel far more comfortable in my own skin now than I ever did when I was younger, I feel like I didn’t start to discover who I am/want to be until I was 30. I feel at ease with who I am now but spent most of my younger years doubting everything and worrying about what other people thought of me.

Strangely, I’ve found I’m happier now in my 40’s than I was in my 30’s… but mostly because I’ve re-embraced my passions and activities from my 20’s

For far too long I stopped doing Nerdy things and going to concerts etc because it’s not “sensible” to do them when you get older… turns out being sensible is a fucking killer that can sap your will to live.

The trick to growing older happy, is to not grow up while you do it

The older I get the more I realise people actually don't give a shit so wear what you like, do what you like. Spent so many years being drab for fear of people seeing me. Now I have fluorescent hair, big makeup and the biggest smile ever.

I’ll be joining the 30 club just like you OP in about 3 months time.

My 20’s have a been blast so it’ll be interested to see what the next decade brings. Society says I should be married with kids and a mortgage. I’m guessing this is where the real adulting must start!

On the plus side, turning 30 means as a man I’m deemed “more desirable” to a greater amount of the fab population so not all bad I guess

Being an OAP you are still a youngster. Once you get to my age there are some bonuses free bus pass, free prescriptions to name a couple. Down side doctor seem to care less about you, having to work still because the state pension is crap. Over all though I'm happy to still be here
