What do you feed the ducks?

I was out for a walk earlier and saw a couple (adults) feeding the ducks bread.

I always thought bread was bad for ducks but apparently not, in small amounts.

These two had distributed half a loaf.

There were no peas or rice or oats or seeds.

Another park near me as signs up for alternative things to feed ducks.

What do you feed the ducks?

Mostly false hope. The kids like running up as if they're going to throw food in, and watch the ducks get hopeful. But if we remember to take food it'd be bread. Our local park has no such signs about we should feed them

Most animals will eat things if fed them.

Doesn't mean they are good for them. Bread is not for ducks or garden birds.

Think they charge about 50p for a bag of oats to feed the ducks at our park, the swans are in charge though.

Supermarket own-brand oats are about £1/kg; your local park must be turning a nice little profit

I would say swans are quite amicable compared to canada geese; those things are just born evil.

Shame on you, can't use lead for wildfowl (won't be able to use it for any birds soon if FACE get their way)!

The park near me also has signs saying what to feed them and what not to mainly because it clogs up the bottom of the lake and creates an unhealthy environment for the ducks and fish.

I feed them duck food. It’s that simple and a lot cheaper than bread right now

I get duck and swan feed from the local garden centre. We have resident swans with their 8 cygnets at the moment. I love watching them grow and learn to fly.

I normally spend £10 - £12k on shooting, plus membership of wildfowling clubs, not going to be great next season with the severe shortage of partridges!

I remember when the lead ban for wildfowl came in, BASC (the leading body for wildfowlers) stated that they would support the ban on lead when there was a viable, both performance wise and price, available, and when the case against ingested, rather than penetrative, lead had been proven (something that we're still waiting for!)

Within 6 months they'd rolled over, and the lead ban came in.

Guess who's leading the "voluntary" phasing out of lead shot!!!!

The reservoir near me urges people to feed the ducks only birdseed and also in particular sliced grapes.

They do clearly request people not to feed them bread.

I sometimes feed the sparrows too...

Apparently peas are good for them. Defrosted frozen ones.

I feed the swans corn or seeded bread.

My ducks eat scraps (vegetable), slugs and other things that they find in the grass and pond, and grains.

Bread is fine. I've worked with all manner of ducks, swans and geese and it helps to supplement their diet. If people stopped feeding them many more would starve to death.

The thing I find wrong about that is 10,000/1,000 = £10 per bird.

I should point out that I have nothing against hunting or farming animals for food as long as it's humanely done. But £10 per duck? My local market sells 2 whole ducks for £9 or £6 each individually.

Even though I have a somewhat carnivorous diet I find hunting purely for sport to be abhorrent - I don't even understand fishing for sport. Just catch me a rainbow trout and I'll make a harissa fish special!
