Seeing as it’s pride month (!!) there has to be a few nice things right??

So, what’s the first LGBT thing you ever saw, read, listened to etc that’s actually stuck with you?

For me, it was when i was 17 and read Giovanni’s Room for the first ever time…I haven’t been the same since; it made me finally feel seen, despite being MLM and me being WLW.

Probably the TV series "Queer as Folk". I doubt you'll be old enough to have seen it, OP. But it was the first representation of homosexuality I saw on TV, in a household of parents who openly voiced homophobic sentiments. I kept my viewing secret.

Yes, I remember really enjoying QAF at the time. I think we probably forget how novel it was, even though I agree 1999 feels very recent!

Even older, but I probably saw this at point in the 90s too, but check out "My Beautiful Launderette" - it's about a lot more than the main characters being gay, but is a great film.

The other, also from around 1999, I think, but not an easy watch, is "Boys Don't Cry". Stayed with me for all the wrong reasons - another great film, but I know I could never watch it again as I found it too harrowing.

Another one for Queer as Folk. For me it made realise that gay men could be edgy and cool and not the stereotype that had been pushed before it.

Plus the soundtrack was dancy as fuck.

I think the first one I really remember was a sex scene in This Life. Ferdy on the stairs with another man. That struck me as I'd never seen two men in that situation before.

But otherwise watching Beautiful Thing and, though it is cheesy and not to everyone's comedic taste, But I'm A Cheerleader. That was the film that made me curious about kissing girls. Only took me 20 years to finally do it

I had a much older cousin that was outwardly gay who had an older boyfriend, so it’s not something I’ve ever wondered about or felt curious about, it’s just something I’ve always accepted from as far back as I can remember

Tom watched Batman and Robin series as a kid and not sure why they called it camp, same for Laurel and Hardy and Morcame and Wise.

Tom has very poor gaydar and did not know that Tom Cruise 1994 Interview with the Vampire had any homosexual connotations until he read about it later. Great film though. Still not sure if any of those mentioned had LGB undertones...
