"My work colleague recently went on a cruise. Two ladies were wheeled on board the ship in wheelchairs with priority treatment past everyone else. Both ladies were spotted during the cruise taking part in physical sports activities, walking unaided etc etc. Then at the end of the cruise back in wheelchairs again getting the special treatment. So clearly there are a small minority taking the piss by faking it! " I was just talking to my husband about this and we have got to be a little bit careful, Some disabilities mean some things are difficult whilst others not so much. Apparently there's been a 20% increase in the number of people requesting wheelchairs at airports since delays have been reported. I was actually just saying to him I guess some people could maybe stand in a queue for 30 minutes without the aid of a wheelchair but not 2 hours. I guess my point is don't take things you don't need but at the same time consider anyone to be genuine as you just don't know. It's a tricky balance.

"There are quite a few people who have a condition that I have who now ask for assistance at the airport because of the issues with queues. I haven’t done it, generally I don’t let my health condition stop me from doing things at all, but multiple hours queuing at various points of Birmingham airport left me absolutely wiped out to the point of needing to up my painkillers considerably the next day. I also don’t like the way it’s been brought up - it’s almost blaming the increase for the problems when it’s actually most likely the other way round. Disabled people get enough stick as it is without them now being under scrutiny at airports with people judging if they’re disabled enough to warrant the help or not." Totally agree. I have sort of changed my mind on it slightly after reading excuses that airline and airport bosses have been coming up with and I'm starting to think this is just another way of blaming the customer.

"I'm absolutely fucking bricking it, when I'm supposed to be travelling on my own, from Manchester via Amsterdam to Madrid. I'm going in early July. I'm already being told that they won't bring my chair back to me for the transfer in Amsterdam, which petrifies me. What if they lose my chair or don't load it on the second flight? I'm stranded without it. Anyone pretending to be disabled can do one. It's hard enough without people taking the piss. " I totally get that, we are flying at the end of the month and quiet worried too although The airport we are flying from doesn't seem to have too many doesn't seem to have too many issues. I really hope it's all OK for you, this is what people don't realise It's not about jumping queues it can have very serious consequences when the assistance goes wrong or isn't available.

It’s exactly that - it’s just an excuse. My flight from Brum to Glasgow was delayed by over an hour the other day because two passengers in wheelchairs were waiting on the ambulift to get them to the plane (for some reason we were next to the airbridge, but not attached to it). The pilot made very clear it was because of lack of staff at the airport and they only have one of the lifts. Yet I bet that’s seen as one of the “disabled people causing delays” times. It’s an excuse.

People do not give two shits about disabled people, if it means their flight is delayed. They don't care that there's only one ambulift or that they need special equipment to board/get off. People are vociferously lacking in any shits in such situations because I've been there.

One guy had an email for some CEO somewhere that he gave them to complain. Other people shifted around so that their family members, who were dotted around the plane, could all sit together. The most bewildered person of the day was the ambulift guy at Glasgow waiting when we disembarked who was clapped by a few people and there was a cheer when he parked up. I doubt he had any idea why we were delayed so he just looked slightly baffled at how pleased everyone was to see him

"The staff at Spanish airports for "Sin Barreras" are always amazing. I know I'm in good hands with Sin Barreras. It's just all the fucking barreras stopping you from getting to Spain in the first place " We have always found the assistance in Spain 2nd to none.

Yeah it is tricky for the airport staff especially they are probably worried about getting it wrong and losing their job ..

"Some ppl obviously don't understand why ppl use wheelchairs either fulltime or part-time doesn't make them any less disabled why are ppl so judging when it comes to things like this! If it doesn't affect your life let them be! " It is a problem if they are only using it as a way of skipping queues that's the issue, Not people who genuinely need assistance or a wheelchair for whatever reason.

They obviously have issues too warrent assistant you get asked this when booking some airlines even ask for evidence of their conditions from a doctor or hospital professional...just cause you can't see what's up with them doesn't mean they don't need help! I'm simply saying it has been reported that some people are requesting wheelchairs simply to avoid queuing who do not need them to jump queues that is unacceptable." What am saying is how do you know that those ppl that you see dont genuinely need the assistant as your disabled yourself! So you yourself are judging ppl in using a wheelchair to jump queues...how do you know they haven't proven they have disabilities when booking ...

It doesn't permit my husband to sit with me at Manchester Arena, if I get a wheelchair space. They all ask for things like PIP or carers allowance letters, which we do not claim. A doctor's diagnosis is all I have. It was enough for a blue badge but seemingly not for other things.

"Not every disability or injury is visible. " I do know that and I'm not judging anybody for using a wheel chair or assistance. I have said further up it has been reported in a few been reported in a few newspapers. Obviously I have no way of knowing whether this is genuinely happening or not but my 1st thought was that it gives people ideas. Absolutely 99% of people that use wheelchairs or assistants at airports do so out of necessity.

"Not quite the same but i can only walk about 20 mins at a time currently so i may need to get some assistance when we go away!" We have always found the assistance really helpful. It does need to be booked but I think you could do it up to 48 hours in advance. They do have the langyard system at airports, you are supposedly meant to be pulled out of queues but that doesn't always happen.

"Always going to get people doing shaddy things to benefit themselves. It's the world we live in, I don't act that way and I don't let folk bother me that do, I've had a wheelchair once at an airport that I probably could of got away with not using, but for health and safety reasons I wasn't allowed to take my crutches on the plane with me . You just don't know others situation. Enjoy life with what you make of it " That's strange. I've taken crutches on every flight I've taken since 2017. It's the only way I can get from the aircraft door/ambulift to my seat. They do insist on putting them in the overhead locker which means when I travel alone, I'll have to rely on staff or other passengers to get them if I need the loo. I fucking hate being reliant on other people

"Requiring assistant is booked at time of booking a ticket and further at the airport people who need assistance may have limited aid and these disabilities can trigger at any time so without having to add to this.... The main problems were due to the tickets being bought and the airline Being not ready lack of staff causing havoc" Definitely lack of staff is a huge issue.

Am certainly not judging you for having a disability what so ever you started the post am just replying to what was said! What am saying is how do you know that those ppl that you see dont genuinely need the assistant as your disabled yourself! So you yourself are judging ppl in using a wheelchair to jump queues...how do you know they haven't proven they have disabilities when booking ... I'm not judging anybody and I think you need to read the post and what I written again. Us to avoid your confusion I will repeat what I have said one more time. Anybody who feels tempted to claim they need a wheelchair to simply jump a queue don't! That is not me judging anybody who is in a wheelchair. Are you not judging ppl then who supposedly fake being disabled to jump a queue? And telling ppl not to do this as its draining resources for ppl who are genuinely disabled? I'm absolutely judging people who pretend to be disabled. " See how would you know they are disabled are not though! Are you gonna ask them the problem here is they don't have enough staff to cope with and sort several disabled folk per flight not actually rhe disabled person themselves..

"Requiring assistant is booked at time of booking a ticket and further at the airport people who need assistance may have limited aid and these disabilities can trigger at any time so without having to add to this.... The main problems were due to the tickets being bought and the airline Being not ready lack of staff causing havoc Definitely lack of staff is a huge issue. " Due to the pandemic were loads of cutbacks

" I've been that person. The absolute hate from the people as I passed along the aisle to my seat (at the very back) could not be unseen. People do not give two shits about disabled people, if it means their flight is delayed. They don't care that there's only one ambulift or that they need special equipment to board/get off. People are vociferously lacking in any shits in such situations because I've been there. That’s awful. Thankfully people on my flight were outraged for the people waiting. I doubt he had any idea why we were delayed so he just looked slightly baffled at how pleased everyone was to see him " Love this!

"I have never used the assistance available to me at airports. (Not that I would even know how to go about it) However now I would really look into it. I don’t do well in the sort of environment that’s being reported. " If you need it it is a game changer. You simply contact the the assistance line for the airline you are travelling with the numbers are normally on The company's website. It's really easy to do, You just have to give them your flight details, Explain that you feel you need assistance and they will ask you some questions to best determine how they can help you.

"It has been reported that some people have been claiming to be disabled to skip queues at airports. Whilst I understand for some this may be tempting it is completely unacceptable and means less Facilities and assistance available for people that genuinely need them. Having a disability is hard enough without having people question whether you're one arseholes that are just pretending. I'm not suggesting anyone here would ever do something like this but I just wanted to put this out there for people to have a think. " I see this all the time Having a great unassisted time at the resort then in a wheel chair in the airport them and family skipping queues Twats

" They might not have been taking the piss. Scouse is disabled and cannot stand for a long time with being in agony. Queuing in airports for example is impossible so she gets wheelchair assistance through the airport. However she is OK to walk around so long as she keeps moving. So to an outsider it might look like she's taking the piss but she genuinely needs the assistance.
