"MasterRopeKnot on here runs rope events - he would be helpful. Think he's midlands?" MRk is awesome. Book/video learning is always good too: Wax Lyrical: A Kinkster's Guide to Wax Play -Tinder Hella SM101 - Jay Wiseman The Seductive Art of Japanese Bondage - Midori Bondage for sex - Chanta Rose Two Knotty Boys - the YouTube Kink University - YouTube kinkcom As others have said the BBB and LAMchester often have workshops and teaching sessions on, as do many of the local munches.

"Don't use ordinary candle wax get some from a specialist shop, (you know the ones)" There's a number of areas of BDSM where things are not quite how they look from the outside. Wax is one, you need to know the difference between soy and paraffin. Another area people often get wrong is canes, don't go to the garden centre and get some 'canes', bamboo splits and the edges are like a razor. BDSM canes are generally ratten, kooboo is popular, if they break, they generally break at a knuckle. (I've never had one break, but I'm not into the more severe end of the hobby) Ropes, it's beautiful, but some areas, especially suspension require a lot of knowledge. Get involved in the community and learn about the specific activities you want to play with.

I've encountered a cane from bamboo and it was nasty compared to the proper ones. Ouch! And back when I didn't know anything I let someone use some very questionable rope techniques on me. Someone who has taken the time and energy to learn properly is much more likely to find willing play partners also.

When I first joined the BDSM scene I was tied up (and suspended) by someone who was well known on the scene and even led workshops on ropework. Turns out their book learning was lacking and I have permenant nerve damage from badly placed rope. No matter if you want to tie or be tied... Learn as much as you can, so you can truely give informed consent.

"...and I have permenant nerve damage from badly placed rope. " Sadly that's not as uncommon as it should be. Between the mass media encouraging everyone to try BDSM to spice up their sex lives, and us always going on about pervertables, what's a newbie to think? For the sake of clarification, pervertables means getting the wooden spoon out the kitchen drawer, not heading down to B&Q for some rope, a box of candles and a garden cane

"...Sadly, I bought some ‘bdsm’ candles at a bdsm kink market and it wasn’t the right type at all. So buyer beware " Sadly our hobby isn't regulated. Buy a condom and it has a quality mark and a date. Buy a candle, and unless you know what soy, tallow and paraffin smells like, it really is caveat emptor! Drop the wax from very high up at the start, and I think you should try it on yourself first...but that's a debatable topic, after all I'm a sadist, not a masochist

"Wax is a lot of fun. And as echoed , make sure you get the body wax. Sadly, I bought some ‘bdsm’ candles at a bdsm kink market and it wasn’t the right type at all. So buyer beware . " Thats a shame, but without knowing the event or seller its hard to gauge what they were selling. Sadly the best candle maker has long since shut up shop, but there are a few more makers out there with decent reputations. But I would stress don’t use table candles or you are asking for serious burns.

"... I’m struggling to connect with ladies on Fabs . Although, I tend to find..." Just a different market. E.g. a lot of ladies put spanking as one of their interests, but you have to accept that most on here have a different meaning to those who put it on a fetish specific site.

"We started watching a fairly informative and engaging tutorial about quick release and safe knots. It didn't really go so well" It’s always been drilled into me at the shabari workshops to have safety scissors always on hand .

Some of us live it as a 24hour lifestyle.

"Guy here looking to learn the rope would love to try candle wax to I am in Derbyshire area" There is a far better suited website to your search than this one, along with several events, again listed elsewhere, in your area a quick internet search should turn up what you're looking for.
