I visited an 'upmarket' retail outlet next door to Wembley Stadium in the afternoon. I bought some ZWILLING J.A. HENCKELS kitchen knives. Real sharp deadly bastards: bread knife and vegetable knife. Sharper than KC²'s filthy tongue and her fingernails across my bare back. I offered the retailer my personal details and driving licence, being a good citizen an' all.

But they weren't bothered.

in fact, I think more of my friends call me Tibs than my given name (Dean) in fact, I sign my paintings Tibs...would awkward to have to change it to Tib

There was chocolate in the fridge. Mr KC bought it for me last Thursday. Before I could eat it, I got a phonecall from A&E. My Dad had fallen, broken his neck and nose etc. I drove over an hour to be with him and stayed awake for not far off 48hrs straight. It's been a long few days.

I had a few squares of my chocolate earlier, the first time it had been opened

On this day 1592 this happened. Sir Walter Raleigh, English gentleman, writer, soldier, courtier and explorer was one of Queen Elizabeth I’s favourites. Why, he had even cast his expensive cloak on to a muddy puddle to protect the royal feet as the monarch processed through Greenwich. There was no stopping him after that. Until this day.

That was when the Queen discovered Raleigh had secretly married one of her ladies-in-waiting. Elizabeth had not been consulted and she was furious.

The pair were immediately arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London. And so began Raleigh’s descent into disfavour, disgrace, and, ultimately, death.

It is worth noting at this point that the story of Raleigh’s gallant gesture with his cloak came from Thomas Fuller, an English scholar and historian whose work, Histories of the Worthies of England, was published after his death in 1622. Fuller enjoyed anecdotal tales and was known for embellishing the truth.

For what it’s worth, here’s what he wrote about the cloak incident:

“Coming to the English court, Raleigh found the Queen walking, till meeting with a plashy place, she seemed to scruple going thereon.

“Presently, Raleigh cast and spread his new plush cloak on the ground, whereon the Queen trod gently, rewarding him afterwards with many suits, for his so free and seasonable tender of so fair a footcloth.”

True or not, Raleigh was never to fully regain favour with Elizabeth after the marriage betrayal and when she died in 1603, to be succeeded by James I, he found himself in a perilous position having spoken out against the successor.

Soon facing trumped-up charges of treason, he was to spend 13 years in prison before facing execution at Westminster on October the 29th, 1618.

But his courage never left him. Details of the execution, incorporating a contemporary account, are recorded in the book Criminal Trials by David Jardine, published in 1832:

“Then, a proclamation being made that all men should depart the scaffold, he prepared himself for death, giving away his hat, his cap, with some money to those that stood near him, saying: ‘I will now take my leave; for I have a long journey to go, and an assured hope to be quickly there.’

“And then putting off his doublet and gown, desired the executioner to show him the axe . . . So, it being given unto him, he poised it in his hand, and felt along the edge of it with his thumb, to see if it was keen; and, smiling, spake unto Mr Sheriff, saying: ‘This is sharp medicine, but it will cure all diseases.’

“As he was laying his head on the block, the executioner would have blindfolded him; upon which he rebuked him, saying: ‘Think you I fear the shadow of the axe, when I fear not the axe itself?’ ”

Other reports say that he told the executioner: "Let us dispatch. At this hour my ague comes upon me. I would not have my enemies think I quaked from fear. Strike, man, strike!"

On this day 1859 The famous tower clock known as Big Ben, located at the top of the 320-foot-high Elizabeth Tower, rang out over the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London, for the first time.

After a fire destroyed much of the Palace of Westminster, the headquarters of Parliament in October 1834, a standout feature of the design for the new palace was a large clock on top of the tower. The royal astronomer, Sir George Airy, wanted the clock to have pinpoint accuracy, including twice-a-day checks with the Royal Greenwich Observatory. While many clockmakers dismissed this goal as impossible, Airy counted on the help of Edmund Beckett Denison, a formidable barrister known for his expertise in horology, the science of measuring time.

The name “Big Ben” originally just applied to the bell but later came to refer to the clock itself. Two main stories exist about how Big Ben got its name. Many claim it was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, the London commissioner of works at the time it was built. Another story argues that the bell was named for the popular heavyweight boxer Benjamin Caunt, because it was the largest of its kind.

Even after an incendiary bomb destroyed the chamber of the House of Commons during the Second World War, Elizabeth Tower survived, and Big Ben continued to function. Its famously accurate timekeeping is regulated by a stack of coins placed on the clock’s huge pendulum, ensuring a steady movement of the clock hands at all times. At night, all four of the clock’s faces, each one 23 feet across, are illuminated. A light above Big Ben is also lit to let the public know when Parliament is in session.

On this day 1977 The BBC banned the Sex Pistols’ God Save the Queen. Thirty years after its release, John Lydon also known as Johnny Rotten, offered this assessment of the song that made the Sex Pistols the most reviled and revered figures in England in the spring of 1977: “There are not many songs written over baked beans at the breakfast table that went on to divide a nation and force a change in popular culture.” Timed with typical Sex Pistols flair to coincide with Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee, the release of God Save The Queen was greeted by precisely the torrent of negative press that Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren had hoped. On May the 31st, 1977, the song earned a total ban on radio airplay from the BBC, a kiss of death for a normal pop single, but a powerful endorsement for an anti-establishment rant like God Save The Queen.

While some in the tabloid press accused the Sex Pistols of treason and called for their public hanging, the BBC was more moderate in its condemnation. In response to lyrics like “God Save The Queen/She ain’t no human being,” the BBC labeled the record an example of “gross bad taste”, a difficult charge to argue, and one the Sex Pistols wouldn’t have wanted to dispute. Even with the radio ban in place, and with major retailers like Woolworths refusing to sell the controversial single, God Save The Queen flew off the shelves of the stores that did sell it, selling up to 150,000 copies a day in late May and early June. With sales figures like that, it seems implausible that God Save The Queen really stalled at #2 on the official UK pop charts, yet that is where it appeared, as a blank entry below, I Don’t Want to Talk About It by Rod Stewart, the ultimate anti-punk. Like every other effort to suppress the song, refusing even to print its name in the official pop charts played right into the Sex Pistols’ hands.

Like naughty schoolboys concerned only with the approval of their peers, the Sex Pistols baited the British establishment throughout their brief career, but never more so than during the Silver Jubilee. When they took to the waters of the Thames and attempted to blast God Save The Queen from giant speakers loaded onto a boat chartered by Virgin Records chief Richard Branson, the police dutifully responded by chasing the boat down and arresting its passengers when they reached the dock. When members of Parliament threatened to ban all sales of the single, a Virgin spokesman replied: “It is remarkable that MPs should have nothing better to do than get agitated about records which were never intended for their Ming vase sensibilities.” Like the BBC ban announced on this day in 1977, these incidents only fed the controversy the Sex Pistols had set out to create.
