Hello;

Looking for some coping techniques for both gender and body dysphoria.

I’m non-binary and this is the label that fits me the best at the moment; but I’m struggling to admit to myself that maybe I might be a trans man? The gender dysphoria I’m experiencing currently is unbearable.

As well as that; this body dysphoria seems to be kicking my ass. I love being fat, I’m very positive, and now all of a sudden I look in the mirror and throw up.

Just looking for coping techniques really! Anything to either help or just take my mind off of it

Have you thought about talking to a professional?

I'm also sure there's bound to be some different groups across the interwebs dedicated to things like this for advice and support. But hopefully the lovely alphabet mafia community of fab who have experience with this issue can help you.

I’m waiting for my therapy to restart yet I don’t know whether to find a therapist that deals specifically in this issue, you know? I had a bad time in the past with therapists being quite prejudiced (ironically lol) so I get worried

That's a really tough place to be OP. Definitely speaking to your GP would be a good idea as they can help refer to other more appropriate places. It's important to not suffer in silence.

I’m training to be a therapist and this makes me really sad

I’m hoping this link will work, it’s a page on gender dysphoria by Counselling Directory. I think given your past experience I’d recommend looking for a therapist with a specialism in that area so you know going into therapy that you’ll be heard and held. Sending lots of love x

I’m the mum of a trans man (AFAB) he is now 25 but he has been on his journey since he was about 17 but it obviously started before then but became more unbearable to deal with as he got older as others have said you need to speak to your gp they will know where to start there are also a vast amount of help groups and society’s out there with people who are in the same place you are it’s a long journey but if it’s what you truly feel in your heart is your true self then it’s definitely possible don’t lose faith

I volunteer as a peer mentor for an LGBT organisation so it's well worth seeing if there are any in your area who offer a similar free service, or can signpost you to appropriate services if not.

Dysphoria is difficult to manage, particularly for people who are in the 'questioning' phase and for non-binary people, simply because sources of dysphoria can be really unpredictable and surprising and you won't necessarily have an immediate remedy I mind.

It's also worth being aware that it's very common for dysphoria to increase as you question further or become more sure of your gender identity, as you'll be more aware of the incongruence between your sex, physical characteristics and gender identity.

Try and find small things that give you euphoria - perhaps items of clothing or accessories that make you feel affirmed, ways you can wear your hair etc. It might sound trivial but if you must look in the mirror it can help to have something to focus on that's affirming, or an act of self care that helps (for me it's usually having my eyebrows done, painting my nails etc)
