Pink jobs / blue jobs

My ex wife was very much of the opinion that in a household there were men’s jobs and women’s jobs (blue and pink), which I never liked or agreed with but went along with to keep the peace. As someone who has lived alone quite often I’m used to doing all my own cooking, cleaning, laundry etc as well as all the Maintenance jobs and I much prefer a partner who thinks the same. I get that there might be things people just aren’t capable of doing but otherwise I think both of you should do any of the jobs that need doing and just share the work equally. How does/has it worked in your relationships?

I live on my own so do pink and blue jobs within my capability. I think jobs should be shared but whether one cleans the bathrooms and the other tends the garden shouldn't be a matter of gender or roles, just who is best at doing that job.

Interesting. Think these things differ from culture to culture. For example in lots of Caribbean households it’s pretty usual for men to do the cooking and I grew to with the idea of men cooking being normal compared to other friends.

Uh, I would say although roles are probably shared better nowadays I doubt they’re shared all equally (generally speaking) and think they’d probably still be categorised as ‘blue or pink’ roles.

Also thought it was interesting reading an old study that talked about men doing more housework but still seeing it as women’s work and calling it ‘helping out around the house’. Same way Dad’s often say they’re ‘babysitting’ when looking after their own kids .

I had pink and blue jobs with my ex, but used to pretty much do them all as rarely did he do anything - so much easier being single for me.
