In 1981 a song by UB40 was realeased. It was called, one in ten, and reflected the percentage of unemployed on unemployment benefits. Of course that figure changes over time. The left wing rag, the Guardian, is running an article based on the release of figures from the Office for National Statistics. Roughly one in ten females aged 16-24 identify as gay or bi. That is 10%. In 2004 the figure was about 3%.

As a country are we getting gayer, or is it just fashionable or as we evolving as a species or is it all smoke and mirrors.

What's going on here guys

Somewhere near here

In regards to the guardian article. I think there’s far more acceptance as a society to explore and identify. I remember as a child of the 90s my mum would make negative comments about homosexuality and my neighbour spoke of her concern to my mum of a film I watch which had a same sex couple, she felt it wasn’t appropriate for 12 year old me. Now times have change, it might just be in my circle but we see more in the media etc.

On a nutshell, people are no longer hiding who they are because we’re more accepting

I don’t have much faith in ONS numbers but it makes sense it’s increasing, as we become a more inclusive country , more people feel safe and happy to identify as different sexually , gender, religion etc. Fab users just need

to catch up with the general public now

There's a big difference.....

My grandson said of Southend " I like it here Nan, you can be who you want to be".

I think that's the ethos of today amongst young people.

We can be who we want to be.

Most of us are on the spectrum of sexuality and always were. It's just more ok to explore this now. I'm not strongly bi so if society was how it used to be I would have just ignored this.

No; people just feel more comfortable with who they are now. I’m 20 and yet I’ve still experienced homophobia and transphobia; yet I know it’s never going to be on the same level lesbians like me faced in the 80s. Lesbians married men and gay men married women to hide their sexuality; people are just happier to be more open now

by the big field

On a side note, 1 in 10 is an absolutely superb piece of songwriting, hugely overlooked when it comes to kudos for political commentary in music and sadly, a lot of it is probably more relevant now than it was when it was released.

Less stigma so people are more likely to be openly gay or bi.

I don't think we're becoming gayer, I think it's just more acceptable so people feel more comfortable considering that they may not be entirely straight and are more open about it.

@Essex tom.

Cheers! Spotify playlist UB40, time to sit back and listen to "Present Arms" in full.

1 in 10 one of my favs. Sadly 40 years later don't think we have learned that much over the years, listening to the lyrics. Unemployment may be lower, but most of the rest holds true.
