They’ve had security tags on for years now… my son is 10 and I remember them being on his brand as it was a certain type therefore more expensive than others

Lidl near me keep them in the stockroom or under the tills.

You have to ask at the till for the one you want.

It's £8 a tin.

In Tesco they keep Jack Daniels in the stockroom and you have to ask for it at the till.

I didn't realise this and was heartbroken when I saw the empty shelf, until someone pointed out the little notice stuck on the shelf.

When I was studying I worked in a Co-op and our store was the same. We actually only put empty ones on shelves and kept full ones behind the till.

Another reason is that it's low risk. Supermarkets don't want the publicity that comes with prosecuting someone for stealing baby milk.

It's first stage milk (up to 6 months). Heavy marketing at new parents undermines breastfeeding rates. Now in reality that's a bag of shite and breastfeeding rates are low for many reasons, including personal choice. But that's the WHO international code rule.

Everyone ultimately, if wealth was distributed more fairly. Can easily be done we just prefer to have the insane inequality of billionaires flying on private jets whilst starving mothers shoplift basics.

Society would probably have progressed much further if people didn't need to worry so much about paying for food and having a roof over their heads.

Why should everything be free? The “human race” has far too many participants who cannot look after themselves? We will not evolve to be able to leave this planet by depending not on feeding those who can’t even plan to feed their babies.

So yea whilst I agree on pure humanitarian grounds food should be affordable. I don’t think it should be free or we as a global society encourage the low intelligence to breed even more. It serves no purpose other than the accelerate our doom!

So a few recipes and a story about a wizard are going to change the destiny if humanity? Fair enough I stand corrected.

As fir the rest of your question:

iPhone and Most of the tech you buy

tesla, and the general advancement if transport.

Nuclear fusion.

Space travel.

Next gen micro processors that will enable faster technological advancement.

There will always be an edge case that proves the rule. But JKR was never destitute. Her oarents were very wealthy.

You obviously don't know much about the work Jack Monroe has done, or the people she has helped.

And Rowling inspired multiple children to read, who likely would not have done otherwise. I'm not sure about you, but I'd consider that pretty significant.

As for the rest of your reply, I specifically asked about the toffs running our country. You've just named a series of inventions, so I'm not sure what point you're making.

(Incidentally, iphones wouldn't exist without the poor and destitute mistreated in Apple's factorys.)

I’ve no idea about the toffs you think are running the country. My original comment to which you replied was based in intelligence, market value and the additive value to the general advancement if humanity. Actually, the comment I responded to was based on presumed intelligence, which is precisely the point I was making.

You seem to have assumed that poor = thick. And then you have made another assumption that they are only useful if they make a significant invention.

I won't respond to the rest of your post as it borders on social cleansing and the implications are alarming.

If you equate arrogance with excellence and achievement then that’s fine.

Musk created a few companies. A nicish car company and a rocket amongst other things. Plus he’s punked twitter which sk quite funny.

Btw I don’t want the mother to have to steal baby milk. I want her to have considered her life options before putting herself in a position where she has to. There is a subtle difference.

I don’t think the milk should be so expensive as ti necessitate theft in the first place either.

My response that seemed to have triggered you was against giving all life necessities for free - do you not think this would encourage the feckless to breed even more? After all the stats of the lat 30 years suggest that would be the case.

You might want to double-check which of those Musk actually created.

"Btw I don’t want the mother to have to steal baby milk. I want her to have considered her life options before putting herself in a position where she has to. There is a subtle difference."

That's very helpful to the baby who now exists. "Sorry, kid, your mum should've made better choices in the past. Best of luck."

Regardless of how correct your idea might be (should have considered her life options), in this case it appears impractical. It doesn't actually do anything to support that baby here and now.

Yes, I think life's necessities should be "free." That includes things like education and healthcare too. In the past, rates of e.g. teen pregnancy have gone down. And it was not because things were made more expensive.

Don't worry, I'm not triggered.

Ok. So let us both put our money where our mouth is. I’ll donate 100 units of baby powder to a charity if your choosing. That way your argument will have made a difference. I'm not sure what that would prove, but it would be wonderful if you wish to do that. I wouldn't even limit it to winning a fab. Just do it anyway.

I won't be matching that particular act, as I do not have spare funds like that available. That's what happens when you work for a non-profit supporting the "feckless," as you put it.

I'd recommend checking if your local food bank take baby milk. If so, you could simply drop it off to them. If not, ours does and I'd gladly receive it and take it in.

Fair enough. I'll have to go it alone then. There’s a food bank up the road that we regularly support.

But just goes to show that it is easy for people to spout off about this and that unfairness. But when it comes to ponying up….. well. Easy to spend other people’s money I guess.

I don't need to pony up. The sort of thing you're making a grand gesture of - to win points on fab - is precisely what I do with my life 6 days a week. As does my eldest child, who was raised with the same values.

I'm sure your food bank will be delighted with your generosity. Nice one.

Who’s winning any points? Nobody gives a fuck. This is not a grand gesture. Is is a trifle. Well milk actually. But that’s besides the point. Action speaks louder than words.

Pointless spending 6 days helping out if you can help the same amount with an hours work right?

"What is sad is that anyone is in a position that feel the only way to feed their baby is to steal the milk. It's just so sad and wrong."

What is more sad is someone not in a position to feed their baby doesn't use protection in the first place. No matter what the excuse they shouldn't be stealing shit. If their selfish enough to reproduce they should be selfish enough to go out and pay for the babies requirements at the very least.

The most stolen items from supermarkets booze, razors, baby stuff, bacon and other meats but bacon is top, cheese, TVs and now boxes, games.

Usually by junkies to sell on organized gangs are not that common.

How judgemental. You do realise people can be in a good position and then lose everything ?

"I thinking it should be free, along with most other Staples.

I think the human race would be in a much better place if we didn't have the dog eat world of people fighting tooth and nail for the most basic standard of living.

Who's going to pay for it?

Everyone ultimately, if wealth was distributed more fairly. Can easily be done we just prefer to have the insane inequality of billionaires flying on private jets whilst starving mothers shoplift basics.

Society would probably have progressed much further if people didn't need to worry so much about paying for food and having a roof over their heads.

And yet technology advancement progresses at an almost exponential rate.

Playing devil’s advocate here - what invention is that person struggling for baby formula going to come up with that benefits humanity?

If the ingenuity to buy a pot of milk powder is not there - how are they going to achieve something ‘greater’? "

Perhaps nothing, perhaps a cure for cancer. Since they don't and never will have that opportunity, you will never know.

But you surely can't dispute that a very large proportion of societies problems are caused by poverty leading to low quality of life and poor health - all things that cost every single one of us both financially and in terms of safety for everyone.

Bacon is the most stolen item?

Well to be fair, not everyone shaves but everyone likes a bacon sandwich...

"Pointless spending 6 days helping out if you can help the same amount with an hours work right? "

If that was the case, you might have a point. Colleagues of mine have over 30 families on their case load at any given time.

That's 30 families being supported through difficult times. Over 90 children being safeguarded. And potentially 30 families being referred to a food bank, where they can access items like the ones you'll be generously donating.

Even if all of that can be done in an hour (which i, I'm not sure why the two actions are mutually exclusive.

All the best.
