"Unfortunately the pandemic has caused me dental issues. I started grinding my teeth from stress thanks to a combination of work and loss of my support network and coping mechanisms (mainly the gym). I wore away the enamel on my back teeth on one side. I've actually never been more pleased to get to the dentist than when I got that sorted. "After bad toothache, I went to the dentist. He took X-rays and said I need two extractions, but as I have big roots he would do them a month apart. He said one may be a lot worse than the other. On the day of the first extraction, he asked which one did I want him to do. I asked him to do the one he said could be the worst, because if he did the other one and that was tough I would dread having the "worst" one out. The whole procedure took 10 mins and I got straight back into my car and went back to work. My work colleagues were rather surprised to see me back! The second one came out even quicker. The most painful extraction was from my bank balance!" Same here! I don’t know why I was so apprehensive

"I'm 36. I have no fillings and have had no dental work of any kind. I have check ups annually. I've not needed so much as scale and polish and my gums are scoring 0 (no gum disease) all the way around. My mother is many things, but her over zealous attitude to dental health and the outright banning of "fizzy pop, sticky sweets, lollipops Polo mints and sugary cereal" has paid dividends. She paid for fissure sealing of my molars as a child, which helps prevent cavities. My baby teeth refused to fall out and at age 14 (!) had to have six pulled out, they were that firmly rooted still. I have a gap where an adult incisor never grew (which annoys me, but is cosmetic). On the other hand, Mother's approach simply encouraged my bro to seek out all the forbidden fruits as soon as he had his paper round money. He has a lot of fillings and also other health issues associated with eating too much sweet stuff as a teen. I'm trying to take a happy middle ground with my kids...." Wow you’re so lucky Mrs KC

I can tell you though, the 10yo me did NOT appreciate it at all! I didn't appreciate the baby teeth extraction around my birthday time either, which left me toothless for the critical party time. "Mine keep getting cancelled. And appointments are not available for many many months now when trying to rebook. Although I’m NHS and feel that could be why. If I went private I might be seen quicker? Not sure." Ask why your appointments keep being cancelled, and when rebooking as for cancelled appointments. If they keep cancelling you it’s only fair that you’re given an appointment sooner than later. You can also complain to the BDA (British Dental Association)

The problem with dental tourism is when things go wrong - there’s not likely a UK dentist who will touch it with a bargepole. Then it’s not the easiest to hop on a plane to go back. Big issue is going to become super prevalent soon with people going to Turkey for full mouth crowns. Just a disaster waiting to happen.

"My dentist abroad teaches dentists in this country and until recently, was a UK clinic owner. My dental work comes with a lifetime guarantee. All of my scans etc were done at their sister clinic in Manchester and any work that needs doing is covered here, or there if I want a few days in the sun. £35 plane ticket, hotel sorted by the clinic, lifts to and from the airport and to the dentist. Space age clinic unlike my old fashioned shit hole of a dental surgery here and the highest grade implants etc that you can buy, the same ones used in the UK but for a fraction of the cost. It’s not for everyone but I’ve been made up and after the state of my mouth made by the dentists here, I’ll never see a UK one ever again if I can help it. Oh, and my dentist here has no issue with seeing me if I want. " As long as you’re satisfied is the main thing! I just know there will be a pandemic in approx 10 years of people who went to have “designer turkey teeth” and will be experiencing the very normal complications are having destructive work on their teeth. And just for the record “the state of your mouth made by dentists here” - did you not have any part to play in the condition of your teeth or do you shoulder all responsibility on your dentist/s? Just playing devil’s advocate.
