A quick question for those who are fitness conscious

What is better:

Yoga or pilates?

8 weeks off the gym due to an injury and I'm now clear go get back into it.

Obviously I'll have lost a lot of general fitness in this period.

I'm just aware that as I build my fitness abd strength back I should take care and do some gentle exercise and stretches.

However I'm pretty clueless about that entire world.

Both are good for strength and flexibility, but pilates is good for your posture and core strength so may be better if you're recovering from an injury

I'd go swimming first, zero impact and great for every muscle, plus relaxing.

This, exactly. Best fitness if recovering from an injury. Getting on the bike is low impact too, depends what sort of injury you had.

If you get on the bike make sure you stay in the small chainring on the front as you will be spinning more which increases you aerobic base and doesn’t work the muscular system as much

They're both similar. Pilates is based on yoga, is a bit simpler to pick up and has less of a spiritual side to it.

I suggest you choose a teacher you like and understands what you need from your practice. Thats the more important thing imo.

Good luck finding your practice. I love mine.

Yeah there's a place near me that does open water swimming so I'm going to start doing that twice a week as my main cardio.

I've been given the clear now to start using free weights again but I've been advised to do that no mote than twice a week for a month, tbh I think I'm just going to start with body weight for a few weeks.

I was told that due to the injury being a torn ligament I should do plenty of stretching to help recovery, hence the interest in yoga and pilates

Yeah I'm quite sedentary at work now and I can feel my posture getting crap which I've never experienced before, abd it's leading to a feeling of tension in my back and shoulders

I’d agree with others and go swimming , great exercise. Yogas pretty pointless for fitness/strength and Pilates as pointed out is good for core stability, it’s great after lower back injuries where you need to learn how to engage your core in everyday activities to prevent further injuries. If you don’t have this I’d be swimming, walking, jogging and doing body weight or small weighted functional cardio
