It's sad how certain reality programmes like Love Island and Naked Attraction can cause viewers to feel negative about their bodies.

Whoelse agrees this rubbish needs to stop?

I think naked attraction is the total opposite. There are people of all shapes & sizes. As for love island, it would be nice to see some more run of the mill bodies. the age range of the contestants it’s more likely that they’ll be toned & fit.

Maybe we could see it as promoting healthy living and looking after our bodies?

At what point does body positivity become promoting an unhealthy lifestyle?

It's not the tv show that's making them feel bad, it's their insecurities. We all need to focus on loving our own bodies rather than criticising others.

Why should it stop because you don't agree with it?

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

Those are not the only programmes on TV, are they?

I don't look to TV for validation, personally, but I think that there has been an improvement in this area overy the last 10 years.

Which is not to say more couldn't be done - although I imagine the love island applicants may be self-selecting a particular body type

Why let a bunch of self centred half wits make any form of statement to your life.

Who on earth would want to emulate them.

If you feel they threaten you in any way, it's not their fault, it's yours.

I would believe you are leaps and bounds better than them.

Naked attraction tend to have different body types. I agree about Love Island though if you do feel like that about a reality tv programme or someone on social media dont watch/follow. I do feel like things are changing now though there is more people on instagram showing pose vs reality of skin texture/bodys etc and how filters are so damaging.

Good point and I completely agree. It is good to see some more body positivity out there.

I've never seen love island but doesn't body positivity extend to every body. Is it wrong to be positive about young fit bodies?

I don’t watch love island but I’ve seen naked attraction a couple of times and there seems to be all different shapes and sizes on there.

I also caught this morning the other day when I was in a waiting room and was so pleased to see a lot of larger women modelling the clothes on there. I actually do think things are changing for the better on that respect.

As a fat girl, I dont find these programs have any impact on me. My lifestyle choices have put me where I am. I'm working on changing that, for me, not because society tells me I need to x

I think body positivity does the exact opposite. It promotes acceptance, lack of shame and the celebration of difference. That’s a great starting point to work on any health concerns that are there, should you wish to.

Love island is pushing negative stereotypes about bodies and encouraging young people to think that you need fillers, a boob job, teeth veneers and/or Botox in your early twenties to be acceptable and attractive to men. Just look up what surgery the contestants have had. It's eye opening.

I was specifically talking about a tv show with young people and the audience is young people. I think that messaging sucks. They don't have normal faces or normal bodies if they've had thousands of pounds of enhancements. No wonder young girls judge themselves so harshly if these are the examples of beauty held up but they're not aware of the amount of work the women have had. Like airbrushed photos of celebs. The messaging is - this is what you should aspire to.

Who actually cares?!

You can't be anything these days.

God forbid you look after yourself and look good. No because that upsets people.

Or if you feel the need for surgery to help you look good/feel good. No because that upsets people.

Or if you're overweight but perfectly happy, no because that also upsets people.

I agree with you to a large extent but I see my contemporaries in quite significant numbers having procedures to make themselves look similar to the young women you're talking about. Similar pressure is felt by older women I think

There's irony in the level of negativity expressed towards people of a certain body type and look on a thread about causing body negativity

I totally see what you mean by this. I’ve often thought if I did have what was perceived as the perfect body/beautiful face etc I would almost feel embarrassed to post pics. Good on those people who flaunt it I say! Whatever the size and shape.

Yep. It's also perfectly acceptable it seems to imply that 'beautiful people' have low intelligence or bad personalities, not just here but generally. Body positivity should be in my opinion about positivity towards all bodies.

I find they're quite different groups though. And I see absolutely nothing wrong with Botox etc. But the reasons why an older woman might want to have Botox are quite different from why a teen may think fillers are a good idea. And that's what bothers me - that shows like Love Island are selling this trope of perfect bodies and perfect faces to impressionable kids. Who then feel that they're not enough because they don't have plumped up lips but aren't old enough to be making good judgements. That's why Superdrug offering fillers horrifies me.

"It's sad how certain reality programmes like Love Island and Naked Attraction can cause viewers to feel negative about their bodies.

Naked attraction is probably one of the most inclusive reality tv programs around.

There are people of all shapes and sizes, gay, straight and bi, trans and they even had a couple on there looking for a third.

There's no comparison with Love Island.

But people will always compare themselves to what they see in front of them, be it a reality TV show, a film, a documentary, a soap opera, a music video, a sports event....or just a clothing advert. You can't ever prevent people having negative body image issues simply by stopping broadcasting certain things. You can only encourage them to feel less negative by portraying a wider, more realistic representation of people on screen, in magazines and online.
