Definitely a weird one and I don't watch rugby to know what the difference is. But the refs in football are legitimately shite and have their own ways of interpreting the rules which makes the inconsistencies annoying to fans, let alone the players actually affected.

Maybe the FA should write better/clearer rules then?!

Oh I agree, I'm just saying I get why footballers get pissed off. It's like the whole farce with the handball rule we had in the last couple of years where if it hit the arm, it was handball no matter what.

See above. Change the consequences for dissent and other bad behaviour. Hand out more cards. Points deductions for X red cards handed to a team in a given period. Players who dive should be placed in the stocks in the town square of the next away game. Etc.

I mean, the refs can book and send off players foelr dissent. But then fans say the ref is ruining the game and making it all about him. Maybe a sin bin would be a good idea to being into football?

But that's like attacking the Police officer because they enforce a law dictated by Parliament. The ref doesn't make the rules. If footballers don't like the rules, they have a union and can attempt to influence things at the decision making level. There are some jolly influential people sat in boardrooms around the country.

Rugby refs get respect because they explain what they're doing. To the players, the captains, and in TV games to the audience.

In football they just issue free kicks, cards and refuse to actually comment most of the time.

I suppose this comes back to what Inevitable said. You show any threat to a police officer, you get arrested. The equivalent doesn't happen in football and they do have meeting of the managers and captains to explain rul changes. I just don't think the rule makers are in touch with the issues faced by players. The players are probably more pissed off with the decision than the ref, so I can understand their anger.

That's a great point! They do that in cricket too when they go to the 3rd umpire. The audience can hear the decision making process which makes you also understand that they're only human too. Refs in football are pretty much insulated from accountability when they make a wrong decision by not explaining it

There's tons of Police at most footy matches - sling 'em in the riot van for back chatting? It'd certainly spice up a nil-nil thriller on a wet Tuesday night in Wolverhampton

If they can do that to half of Man United's squad, that would be most helpful

I don't discriminate - in my playing days I was rude to both footie & rugger refs - hockey & cricket umpires too for that matter - I was a competitive bastard that didn't like losing!
