Singles thread - 10 years single

Aberdeen

Last month marked 10 years of my being single. I have dated a couple of times here and there, but nothing concrete like a relationship.

I'm keen to hear from some of you singles. How long you've been single and how do you feel about it?

To an extent I'm pretty settled and happy in my own peace and space, but there are definitely times I think it would be nice to have someone

I was single best part of a decade, then a 5yr relationship, now back to single. Sometimes a regular fwb in between that too. I don't mind my own company, and it turns out I'm not really a fan of living with anyone.

I stopped having relationships when I was 26 and I've no plans to go back.

I have FB and FWB arrangements, sometimes they've been monogamous but mostly not, some have lasted for many years, some I met once or twice a week for many years. Some of my FWB have been very relationshippy, the only real difference being there's no expectation it will progress, no plans to live together or get married or have kids.

It suits me and is what I look for now.

I've technically been single around 7 years now, part of me enjoys not having to answer to anyone, however a part of me fears growing old alone,I would love to meet someone, but I want my happy ever after not just my you will do for now, so I'd rather be single than with the wrong person.

3 years single after leaving an abusive relationship...

I would like another relationship but I was massively controlled previously so I'm enjoying the freedom to do what I want when I want now.

I've never had much luck when it comes to finding a relationship so it's been a whole lot harder to find something now after all I've been through. If I find a FwB that's fills the intimacy void then that will do me.

Just over 7 years now and very happy with a very busy single social lifestyle. It would take someone pretty darn special for me to change that

Single for 5 years (apart from a brief 3 month relationship I was pushed into a couple years ago). Being single is great, I love it. Being able to do what I want, when I want without taking someone else into consideration, not having to deal with another person's agro or mess or dirt.

I’ve been single for 6 years.

I don’t have space in my life for a relationship at the moment and I enjoy my own company and peace & quiet.

I like the idea of a relationship but when I think about it in practical terms it’s probably not for me and I’m happy with that

Depending on the sort of relationship, the most I have done single in my adult life is 9 months. I took that time to recover and improve myself.

I've been single almost 2 years now, I had a short 6 week fling that I'm going to say doesn't count.

I'm content being single and being able to see who I like and do what I want to be honest but I do miss having someone special in my life

I’ve been single long enough to know there’s no hope of getting back together, but not long enough to deal with the heart ache.

I don’t want anything more than a good friendship in the future. Filled with laughs trust openness and great sex. True love is for suckers.

Coming up on three years de facto single. Dated but can't compete. Always someone with more money, looks, muscles, whatever. Heard all the excuses. Mostly money it seems. Not much you can do against a guy with two Ferraris. :/

Think I'm just too used to my freedom now to be domesticated again. It has its ups and downs, advantages and disadvantages. Just have to learn to live with it.

I've been alone for just over 12 years, but I was divorced and not wanted way before he left.

I don't mind being single, but it would be nice to have someone to do things with and spend time alone with that wasn't just sex.

Think my last proper boyfriend was about 14 years ago. But I've never had much in the way of long term, only ever lived with someone else briefly.

After becoming a mum, I never really met anyone I considered good enough to be a part of both of our lives. My son always came first, some guys couldn't handle that. Mostly kept being a mum and dating completely separate.

Then I was really quite ill for a few years and not bothered at all, had the odd friend with benefits along the way. And now I find myself on Fab!

It's been 17 years for me since my last proper girlfriend.

I've been involved with quite a few women since then, but nothing I'd call a proper relationship at all. I've considered myself single for that 17 years.

I love it, and wouldn't have it any other way. I don't want to partner up or share my life with anybody. I don't feel the urge or desire to do that.

I tried relationships when I was younger, probably because I had no-one to role model an alternative. I have always preferred being single as I feel a relationship erodes my sense of identity. Probably need to go into deep therapy over that one

19 years since I lived with anyone. Last relationship was about 15 years ago. I too like being single in most ways. Certainly don’t think I’d want to live with anyone again. I like my own space and tend to the introvert these days especially when tired. Had some enjoyable flings and fwb type things going on which suit me fine. Be nice to have someone or several someone’s to do more social things though.

Given that it seems there are a number of us with similar ways we would like to manage our sexual and social friendships you’d think it would be easier to meet people to have that situation with together.

Yet “in real life” few people admit they would rather actually stay single in terms of cohabitation/monogamy norms so it’s hard to meet like minded folk

Having space certainly helps. Not been single for 25 years but can imagine living in each other’s pockets would drive someone to prefer solitude!

Dating/singles scene these days sounds a minefield though!

Single 3 years. Had a lot of fun being single and I've learned to enjoy my own company and I cherish peace now. I do miss having a special someone though, I'm open to date but I'm avoiding dating apps now. I'd prefer to meet someone from here tbh.

Married for 26 years. Single for 11 years. The best thing I ever did was get divorced and settle on my own. I am much more confident and content and don't feel I am stepping on egg shells, tip toeing around my partner in a manipulative and volatile relationship.

Yes, I am alone, and it's lonely sometimes, but I have met many nice people on fab. Some fwb who do come and go after a while. But at least I have my sanity and freedom to do what I want when I want without being answerable to other people.
