I am in awe.

a Primark shoebox in Leicester

I was taking some of my dad’s clothes to a church which runs a homeless shelter and by chance bumped into someone I knew when I was at school.

When I was at school he lived in a children’s home. His parents put him into care when he was at junior school and never bothered coming back for him. At the age of 17 he found himself being given a bedsit in what was then the roughest part of the city and that was it…. he was left to fend for himself. I know he went abroad to work a holiday and then disappeared off the school posse radar. So it was getting on for 30 years since seeing him last. We both kept doing that “I am sure I know you” stare four or five times before speaking.

After the “OMG it’s you” moment, we exchanged numbers and have been catching up on who has seen who and what are they doing now.

So what was he doing at the homeless shelter…….. he’s now a doctor, well a dermatopathologist I believe is the correct term . In his free time he visits various shelters around the country to give advice to people who are unlikely to see a GP.

I couldn’t help but comment about his past and how fucking amazing what he has achieved is. I hope I quote him correctly when I say his reply was:

“They were not my choices, they shouldn’t burden me or define who I am.”

I don’t just admire this man, I am in awe.

I admire those who have the "Don't let the buggers get you down" mentality.

A wonderful inspiring outcome from a crap start in life - if only we could inspire a lot more kids and be able to show them that a crap start doesnt have to mean a crap future - sadly its a rarity ........... but we carry on trying

How very true

It reminds me of something the late Randy Pausch once said after he'd been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer:

"We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand".

Was just going to use a similar quote.

We all take things forgranted at times.
