Anyone know anything about them!

I should be more specific, mid life crisis no 4 about to happen… (think I’m on 4)

Want to do my motorcycle test, the route: CBT, theory test, then 2 part practical

Question is, what bike, helmet, jacket gloves to get

And any tip tips. Popped into a lovely shop today and tried a few helmets on £180-£240 bracket

I used to have a Shark helmet, Furygan leathers, and Alpinestar boots. None of which broke the bank and were all great quality.

Remember: you're dressing for the slide, not the ride.

The bike depends on budget but you can’t go wrong with a zzr600 for a first big bike. You can lower the rear too.

I have an arae helmet now but had nitro ones before which seemed like really good value for money. Always happy with them.

Just really look out for cars cos even if you think they’ve seen you, they probably haven’t!

I’ve seen first hand minced up people in malia! The road doesn’t give!

I tried a shark in felt claustrophobic, liked the Nexx

You can't go wrong with a Yamaha R6, used to have a couple of mates who raced the pre-injection version and i was one of their pit bitches for a while, easy to work on, loads of spares/upgrades available, lots of fun to ride too!

Personally i like Shoei helmets, 1 or 2 piece leathers are essential even though sometimes they can feel impractical when having to get in and out of them for a short ride out, don't be one of those fools who thinks because its warm weather its ok to wear t-shirt and shorts... it's just not worth the risk of gravel rash when nipping to the shop. Decent boots too, trainers may be comfortable but toes are quite important for walking and ankles are quite fragile if you take a spill.

Yep, don't forget footwear... also recommend kevlar leggings which look normal but skin saving...

If you're going through a reputable direct access course it's possible they sell kit and you'll get a discount through your course ...

When I was 17 I had a 125 4 stroke Honda. It was so reliable. Then I had a 125 2 stroke yammah. The two stroke is fun and fast but high on maintenance. I'm 5'4, 57kg. One of my brothers friend had a 400cc he was the same height. I crashed my bikes and spent more time fixing than riding. I use to service and fix it all by myself. Bikes are easy and fun to work on. But the parts are no less expensive than cars! For your first bike don't buy brand new, I fell loads of times.

Hey Kitty.

Drop us a message if you like.

Ridden bikes since I was 6, competed for years and raced at a quite high level.

Stopped racing in 2007 and restore bikes now and potter about at the weekend.

Good friends with some of the local bike shops and happy to talk you through what you should look for.

And we’re quite local.

And currently have 7 bikes.

The best lid is not necessarily the most expensive brand. Proper fit is everything! If it doesn't fit properly, it won't protect you properly. Get good advice from the shop and try as many brands on as you can.

Warm gloves essential. Clothing needs to be practical and work with why you're riding. If you're commuting you want waterproof and warm to potentially cover work clothes if you travel in them. If it's leisure, why not go sexy with leathers.

Go with zip together top and trousers to prevent drafts, but for ease of undressing (loo breaks etc). I'd say get the best you can afford with the clothing and boots.

However you might want to decide on your bike before you buy the gear if you want to portray a specific image.

I sat on literally hundreds of bikes before I found one I was comfortable to ride!

Then I matched all my gear to it

If you want one of the "bigger" 600cc bikes mentioned here you need to look at doing a direct access course. If you just do the usual test you're limited to a power limit of 35kw (about a 400cc) for 2 years.

Direct access courses, you learn and do your test on a larger bike, but you can ride any bike you want afterwards

All depends upon what you want after you've passed

They are a great bike especially for a first bike. Mine was a bargain as the lady I bought it from was emigrating to the USA the following day !

Hey kitty,

Gear is bike dependent, youd look daft in full race gear on a harley or triumph.

Pop have alook at loads of bikes see what gives you that buzz, ive got afew

Yamaha r1

Yamaha r6 track bike

Harley 48 bobber

Harley breakout

I only ever ride the 48 bobber now, its the only one i get enjoyment riding.

get the gear that suits when your gona ride it olso. dont get suckerd into big brands and the like i bought all waterproof leathers & jeans - wast of money for me.. i ride a harley davidson only in the sun, so wear 'kevlar jeans' a tshirt and gilet.

Get decent footwear, i found 'alpinestars' the comfiest mine look like converse shape boot so look great and very comfy if i hop off it and nip into town ect, theyre as comfy as a daily shoe and also dont like 'bikey'

As for helmets- i have a few i only wear my carbon open face now. But if your looking at a decent reasonable full face i can highly rate 'hjc c90'i went for the full black one with the demist visor which is great, ventilation is good and the front flips up.

As for test... get your theory and hazard perception out the way! That held me up, i did a direct access 3 year ago which was £750 all in.

Good luck, stay safe

Go for it, I passed my test a week ago on Thursday, already had the bike waiting for me at home and I've never ever felt so free in my life. Spent all weekend on it and can't wait to get back on it weekend coming, good luck.

I was going to say! There's a lot of Harly riders who do ride in a T shirt because they think they look cool! Not sure how they dare do it when everyone out there is trying their best to kill you !

Helmet wise, Shark for the price is right up there. Especially their SKWAL line.

Clothing - definitely leather, saves skin if you do slide.

Gloves - I have Richa’s, they’re expensive but make a good all weather set.

Boots - get a proper pair of riding boots, not ankle boots. They’ll have shin protection as well.

In terms of bikes, that’s down to personal preference. I ride Sports bikes and have done since my first (Kwak Zx636), but as mentioned do your direct access, as you’ll learn to ride on a 600cc and the license isn’t restricted. So you could go straight on a 1000cc if insurance costs don’t burn you.

Good question. I (mrs) have recently decided to venture into bikes. I’ve got friends that have taken me out and about trying Lids and leathers out as I know what bike I will be getting once I’ve passed everything.

I was advised to get my theory booked straight off because of the delay and then book my CBT so I can hopefully fly through to my Mod 1.

Wry much looking forward to next summers ride outs

In ma life I've had 3 cars, 1 Transit van, and 26 motorbikes. I've completely stripped (including the engine) and rebuilt all the bikes. Even though it's about 10 years since I had ma last one, I still dress like a biker

Can't help you with any of todays fashion though unfortunately, only other than to say, good stuff doesn't come cheap

Have a look at Sharp Helmet Testing

It’s s government funded website that tests helmets passed the legal minimum and gives them a star rating. Price isn’t a guarantee of quality and the site will help you get the safest helmet for your money

Was a great bike, and taught me a lot about respecting the throttle on sports bikes. Shame she was stolen, as I would have kept her.

Now riding an S1000RR, brutal machine but clinical in how it rides.

I applied for my theory today, being Dyslexic I get accommodations, however pass the online practice test thing no problems and I’ve not read up on the subject yet!

So awaiting DVLA, looked at helmets yesterday like the Nexx, didn’t feel so claustrophobic compared to the shark

As for bikes… might be highly controversial, I don’t like those sports bikes! Might be due to fact I’ve seen three people knocked of around the Box Hill area, and a few days later flowers appeared where I saw the bikers off

That aside and I think I’d kill myself…. Thinking one of those naked is it? Or a classic. Mates dad has a shed full of Ariel’s those are sexy!

But yeah a naked or classic of some sort

Riding a motorcycle is one of the best feelings in the world.

Do not buy anything too big or heavy, you need to be able to move it around, park it and feel comfortable, confident and safe on it. Start with something around 400cc then in time get something bigger, faster if you want.

You also need to be able to get on it easy and touch the ground with at least one foot.

Best of luck with it, you will get huge amounts of pleasure from riding one that people who have never done so will never know.
