One for the ladies. I’ve been on this pill for just under three months. I’ve not used any contraception pills for nearly 15 years. I practice safe sex but want something as a back up in the background for the rare time it may not be 100%.

What an awful time I’ve had. Pretty much had breakthrough bleeds every week or so, this week being almost like a normal period. I take it as told and religiously the same time every day.

Anyone else had this problem? It makes any planning impossible. Plus it makes me feel like shit! I’m too old for for the regular pill but atleast without I knew when bleeding would occur.

Worth continuing? Will it settle? Spoke to the nurse at my surgery and she said this is common with this type of pill.

Manchester(ish).

Why not use something like an Implant or the Injection? Far far less hassle than pills.

The thing with the pill is I have a choice to come off if I have issues. Harder with the implant. Plus I thought this would give me period free when it’s almost doubled my periods

It should settle after 6 months but that's not really any help to you now.

I've been in the same situation. My body doesn't like artificial hormones plain and simple.

You could try the copper coil if you are happy to continue with having periods. Or the merana coil but that could have the same effect as your current pill.

As others have said, things take time to settle down. The implant is the same. It sounds bad for you, but stick with it for a few more cycles and see if it gets better. If it works then brilliant, but it doesn’t always behave…

Ah, yes, I see the on & off benefits. I think the downside might be this haywire behaviour might crop up evert time you stop and start.

Implant does stop periods, just not for everyone.

It really depends on your body. The first time I tried it I bled all the time. Second time it was fine. The first time I had the implant again I bled all the time so had it out after 3 months. Second time I tried it I loved it. My favourite method was the depo injection. Periods just vanished.

I had that with cerazette. Went back on the pull after not taking it for a few years and was bleeding every day for 4 weeks.

GP switched me to Desogestrel and the bleeding stopped in a few days.

My GP told me yes it's common, but it was because of my age.

It's with asking to try another pill as bleeding every day is shit.

I took it for years and it did stop my periods entirely. I didn't have periods for probably a good 8 years? I can't remember what it was like at the start but I do know that when I stopped taking it to get pregnant, I hadn't realised it was making my mood so low. I've never gone back on it or any other hormonal contraception for that reason.

The pop was good for me too

Stopped my periods.

Give it time to settle, it doesn’t work overnight. Your body has to adjust to the hormones you are now feeding it.

Give it time to settle, it doesn’t work overnight. Your body has to adjust to the hormones you are now feeding it. "

I agree but I’m three months in and having a period almost every week. It’s literally draining. I’ve been checked for other things. It’s the hormones in the pill

It took about 3 months to settle for me, but I was like you at the start. Now I never have any bleeding.

It is depressing feeling like it will never stop and settle down though.

Maybe speak to your GP about a copper coil if you want a hormone free option? Although because it is horome free it won't stop bleeding I am led to believe?

My GP did say although the Mirena isn't hormone free it is a very low dose of progestin compared to the pill.

I was on Cerelle (similar) and it was the worst experience of my life. Just constant massive bleeds and blood clots for weeks, to the point I was convinced I had endometriosis and had to have several examinations. Took a couple of months being off it to calm back down, now I'm terrified to have any pill every again

I think everyone reacts to these things differently, I had the implant in for year, persevered and had 12 months solid of bleeding. I was told to stick with it and I would end up period free but it didn't work for me.

Equally, I was told the copper coil would give me really heavy periods and not recommended at my age (I was mid 20s and hadn't had kids). It turned out to be great for me, shortened and lightened my periods!

The only issue I've had with this latest coil, is we can't find the threads, so I have to have a small procedure to get it removed.

I've found that Family Planning Centres are much more knowledgeable and open to discussing your particular reactions, than a GP.

Yep! I feel your pain!

I gave up with hormonal contraceptives in the end and have been using Natural Cycles since January which has personally been the best thing for me.

There is one type that does and one that doesn’t.

I’ve been debating this for a while because hormonal contraceptives hugely reduce my sex drive but I do like the convenience of the pill when it’s all going well.

I didn't have this, but a relative had debilitating bleeds from another type of pill.

It's been awhile since I've been on the pill, but my recollection is minor breakthrough bleeding in the years I used it. (but my cycle was heinously irregular before that, so I was extremely grateful for any regularity)

I'm on my second Mirena coil and that doesn't stop my periods either (not that you want that), although they're pretty regular and extremely light.

Always ask the doc for a different brand to try. They aren't all the same.

Women are also not all the same....

If you become allergic to the injection you have to wait until it wears off, it cannot be removed.

The implant can be removed but try finding a dr willing to do it before the two years is up. I had that issue and in the end she had to refer me to the hospital as I’d had an awful experience of removal of the first one. The second one had broken inside my arm and moved and was causing all sorts, & she refused for 6 months before taking me seriously.

I don’t mind having a period but it’s the not knowing when that’s the issue. It’s very difficult for women to be in control of this side of things when the side effects are so difficult depending on the woman

With it being near impossible to get GP appointment, in my area at least, I would rather either go with the Pill or something much more long-term. I have Mirena Coil, second now, and it seems to be working well after initial hiccups.

I've never known when my period will come. It's disempowering. (I don't mean "will it be day 28 or day 29". I mean, pre hormonal birth control, will it be 14 days of bleeding or nine months with none. On birth control, will it be three weeks between or five weeks between)

I tried all pills under the sun. Couldn't do combined pills because if my migraines and was on cerazette for a while. They stopped my periods completely but I am useless at taking pills. The implants and the injections just made me feel terrible and killed any sex drive I had totally.

I've now had the copper coil in for the past 8 years and it's a game changer. I haven't had to think about it. My periods are regular albeit a little heavier but nothing I can't cope with. I am myself without any fake hormones inside me. Not looking forward to the removal of it I have to say but I will be having another to replace this one until I hit the menopause.

Copper coil is amazing. I'm on my 2nd one, and my 3rd will take me through the menopause. No hormones, no side effects. Slightly heavier bleed, but I'm only have a 4 day cycle anyways. I tried several different pills over the years, and I always ended up a blubbering, anxious wreck

The old style copper coil doesn't, but it can actually make periods worse.

Thank goodness women sort this stuff out. Imagine if men had periods. Erratic bleeding, heavy bleeding, pain. Hormone shifts that make them feel crap or kill their libido. A piece of copper implanted inside them.
