Manchester (he/him)

Jake Daniels has become the first top flight male professional footballer to come out as gay.

Is this a landmark moment in the sport?

While I understand the significance and what it means to him and others, can't help but think that it's a shame that's something so personal should be newsworthy.

Saying that fair dues to him

It's long overdue. Hopefully we will get to a point where its something that's irrelevant but atm it is important

Selby

In the 21st century shouldn't be important someone's sexually but it is what it is

Good on him. Looking at the horrendous comments on twitter I hope those that attend games next season really support him as I suspect he is sadly going to be in for a hard time from time to time. I hope the authorities are paying attention to the crowds at these games and hand out appropriate punishment.

He has done a good thing and he should be proud of himself.

Someone just pointed out that Justin Fashanu was the first. I stand corrected.

However the first professional in over 30 years and the only openly gay man in British pro football

Hope we have moved on and things work out better for him than they did for Justin

When the World Cup is soon to be played in a country where homosexuality is illegal (and punishable by death for Muslims) with hardly a word of condemnation by players or media...I'd say it's a long path ahead. A sporting boycott was key in defeating Apartheid yet football seems happy to sportswash the homophobic Gulf States.

The mockery has been instant, seen it all over social media, you can bet many of them are football fans. Good on the lad, this is long over due. I am not one for flag waving but in this situation I think it is needed.

somewhere sweet and sour

Hopefully one day it wouldnt be needed to posted all over media outlets. Is like when someone attends a "gay marriage" to me, its just a marriage.

There isn't the political will these days. Too much money to be made.

I have wanted to write this all day.

I am a straight male. However Jake Daniels coming out should be a non story. Why it shouldn’t matter if we like male / female / both of none. I know why it is a story and it is one that should be told and encourage other players who are gay to maybe coMe out so that over time it becomes a non story.

Now let me be clear this is in the mens game. The womens game I would say is a lot more open about sexuality. I have a number of my footy friends are gay / lesbian both male and female.

There's a lot of negative stuff around sexuality and sexual relationships etc in the women's game. The issues might not be identical to the men's game, but it's not all roses either.
