Middle age

This thread is due to an incident that happened to me recently, but caused me to think about my age and place in life.

If the thread gets any traction I’ll elaborate at bit more but what are your thoughts on being middle aged ?

For starters when does it begin ?

As a younger man I always assumed it started at 30 (blame club 18-30 holidays for that assumption )

Young 0-30, middle aged 30-60 and old age 60-90.

But surely that’s changed or has it ?

What irks you as a middle aged man or woman ?

How your seen in TV programmes or film ?

The younger generation critical of how you dress or appear ?

Are middle aged men seen differently than women. We men as boring and predictable world views and women as more progressive ?

Are you actually more content now, without the pressures to conform to peer pressure, comfortable in your own skin ?

Younger folk how do you see the eventuality of middle age ?

I’m just musing on my middle aged afternoon exercise on a sunny day. Also looking forward to a nice cup of tea when I get home.

So no pressure to answer any of the questions above.

I'd say middle aged was 45+, 30 is still young. People are living longer so the ranges are different these days.

I'm lucky that I look younger, but I know some women feel they become invisible past a certain age.

I'm officially elderly. People make assumptions about me and stereotype me due to my age but they do the same for every age.

The only thing that really makes me fed up is when younger people assume I can't use the internet or a computer. I was using those things before half of them were born

You might.

I mean you'd be wrinkled like a prune, dusty like an unpolished shelf and your vag would probably have dried up like the Sahara...........

And you'd be fucked for meets (not literally of course!) as the age search limit is 99.

So yeah. Probably best to pop your clogs before reaching three figures really.

I'd say middle aged was 40, will probably push it to 45 when I'm 38.

I think that getting old is inevitable and I'm rather looking forward to moaning about the state of things, wistfully reminiscing the halcyon days at any given opportunity and not giving a fuck.

Im quite rapidly approaching 40, but definitley dont even feel like Im a grown up yet let alone middle-aged! I think maybe its a mindset more than a specific age? X

I don't give it much thought. I skipped my teenage years completely and I'm 4 years older than my dad was when he passed away 35 years ago.

Apart from that I dress how I like and I do things now that I didn't have the opportunity to do before but that's not age related.

I'd be lying if I said I was passed caring what people think of me but I've never been selfish and I've had to learn to be a little selfish every now and again.

I'm happy in my skin and content with being a father and grandfather.

I'm almost 40 and I crack, creek and pop like a old banger, I'd say I'm middle aged if not more.

I dress how I like and as long as I'm happy with how I look then that's good enough for me and I don't think anyone looks at me and thinks he shouldn't be wearing that

Desperately clinging on to my youth and practising saying things like "I don't feel my age", "age is only a number" etc. :D

I've been called directly or indirectly middle aged countless times this week.

This probably explains why I'm already 1 bottle down.

Well to add context to the thread.

I was at the office and I work with a much younger demographic. A couple of the guys saw my Black Sabbath T-shirt and took the piss a bit, about me dressing too young.

It appears ‘rock T-shirts’ are for the younger generation.

I told them the T-shirt was from an album released in 1971 ‘Masters of Reality’ when their parents were probably children or teenagers. That I had more right to wear it than any youngster with little or no musical knowledge. This by the way was done with humour I wasn’t angry and they took their telling off well.

So it’s just that, that got me musing about mid life. Nobody would question if a younger person had that T-shirt on, even though they probably never heard of the album. But not only did I own it I have it on vinyl….the cheek of them

The whippersnappers!

I mentioned this quote the other day

"What should women (or any gender or identity) never wear after 40?

The weight of other people's expectations."

Age isn't so relevant these days. I participate in an active sport where I'm still kicking the arse of men half my age. It's ability and your mindset..

I am chronologically middle-aged at 44 but have my disposition has been middle-aged since about 19 so I've been waiting patiently for my lifestyle to catch up

My boyish looks are still hindering my full assimilation into middle age though

I am 47 and am happy to claim being middle aged. Although I kind of have to remind myself of it as I just feel the same as I always have done. I just have more life experiences behind me. I love being the age that I am, and I love my life at this moment.

My daughter is 25 and has started referring to me as old. Now that doesn't bother me but what I have realised is that it's not me ageing that's bothering her, it's her own age that is bothering her. She is comparing her life to my life at that age, kids/home/marriage and is putting pressure on herself.
