Training my Cat

we seem to have a few moggy experts on here so.....

One of my cats has decided to sleep on top of my tv, on the sky box....how ca i make him stop?

He has already knocked the DVD player off and broken it (with my beauty and the beast DVD in it , its ok though, i managed to get it out )

Every time he does it pick him up and spray him with water, when he associates doing something with something he doesn't like he'll stop doing it.

We used to have same problem so I put a lip on front of shelf to keep DVD player on and few books under back of DVD player so it was on a 45 degree angle and every time the cat tried to go on it he slid off. It still took him a week or so to stop doing it.

Try covering the top of the DVD player with tin foil. Some cats hate it, (unfortunately some think it's great to play with).

Putting something sticky, like a sheet of, or strips of, sticky backed book covering with the sticky side up will usually stop even the most determined of felines.

Cats can be trained but it takes time and consistency. Positive reinforcement (rewarding the behaviour you want) works better than punishment for behaviour you don't want.

I dont think my views would be much help as I have the naughtiest pussy going - is still stealing the neighbours underwear and socks and we still dont know who it belongs too ..........

The best deterrents for cats tend to be fragrances that they don't like, or are too strong and they don't like.

I'd keep smelly things around the area - fragrances that perhaps you love, but your pussy doesn't. If these are in place for a lengthy period, your cat will acquire a new habitual resting place, and the behaviour that it's doing currently will become weaker and less habituated.

Someone posted citrus peel as an idea above, which is one option, and you could experiment and not have to keep the same smell there all the time by rotating them.

make a bed for the cat elsewhere, put catnip in the bed or place it under a radiator so the cat feels the heat.i have a old moses basket with a blanket in and they have both slept in there.

and one of my cats comes and lies on me, its their way of saying i own you isnt it??

but i do love my little pussy tats to bits.

this works with mine. Or raise voice at him then do it. He will eventually associate the raised voice as trouble and you won't need to soak him!

My cat used to do this with the kitchen work tops. Not very hygienic! Just put a box or something big and awkward on them for a few weeks to the cat can't physically get up there. It'll get the idea after about 2-3 weeks x

When my cats(i had two then) managed to climb on the work top, every time they did it i just used to take them down and say no. After a couple of weeks they never went on them again. Or try the water spray, the dont like that but it does them no harm

I must have one of those rebel cats...she loves water,doesnt take one bit of notice if i raise my voice...sits in the bowl thats full of lemon n limes and shes broke 3 vases,one wooden love sign ,her lid to her litter box and shes only a little kitten, she loves to sit infront of the tv especially when the grand prix is on....she eats bananas ,plaster and bubbles from the bath...mad as and ohhhh so funny .Cats do what they want ,when they want and how they want.

But catnip placed somewhere comfy may entice her or if like mine she or he will ignore and do WHATEVER.....they want....gotta love those pussies
