If you are going on a social what would you like the person you are meeting to wear ? Casual or dressed to impress?

Casual always. Suits are only for weddings, funerals and criminals in court.

If a man turned up in a suit to a social I'd likely walk out.

I don't like scruffy. We've met men socially who've been suited and booted and men who've worn jeans and a shirt and everything in between. They all dressed according to their style and taste. One common denominator was that their clothes were clean and maintained and they were well groomed.

I wear what I like and I think men should too

Casual as I think it gives you a idea of the sort of person you're meeting , and I dont mean being judgemental but as in if someone turns up with heavy rock clothes on and that's not your thing, you know there will be a lack of compatibility

Depends who you’re meeting and where..

I’m casual and wouldn’t be meeting anyone that was super formal. It’s laid back always for me

Some people wear formal clothes as their style. I have started to wear slightly more casual clothes recently but while I was working I wore what some would call formal clothes a lot of the time, smart dresses, shoes, jackets that sort of thing. Do people think dressing like that is designed to hide something? That would go some way to explaining some remarks made to me

Not at all, as if your going on a meet I would presume that you would of had some communication before hand , I myself wouldnt judge anyone for the clothes they wore , Its the person that wears them that makes them , clothes are a personal preference, I might not like the clothes someone wears but could find them one of the nicest people I'd met

Ok I just wondered be because of your comment that casual clothes give you an idea of the sort of person someone is.

I'm secure in the way I dress so not upset or offended but it made me think that people possibly assume I'm trying to give a false impression by dressing smartly.

As always, context!

A drink straight from work, I'm likely to be in a suit, but wouldn't put a suit on specially for a social! In general you're going to catch me in jeans and a shirt/jumper...

Though my last social I was in (clean) gym kit - I did warn them beforehand as we agreed a quick drink while I was on my way and they were off somewhere else! I promise I don't make a habit of it...

Remarks from who?

If it was an office type environment, formal clothes would be normal. If it was a garden centre I'd find it odd.

The same if they were going for a job interview

But seriously I wouldn’t mind as long as it’s Very much situation dependant whether that is daytime or evening, location etc.

I would know through talking to them before meeting up I would have some idea of who they are and therefore what they would be wearing

Smart casual.

Back when I wore a suit for work, if I was meeting someone I removed the jacket and tie to make it less formal but also so that I would be slightly more comfortable.

I always liked them to dress how they were comfortable, but in a way that's suitable for where we're meeting and what we're doing...if someone had ever turned up at a nice cocktail bar in jogging bottoms and trainers I'd have been leaving very soon after they arrived.
