"Donna Leon. Through a Glass Darkly. À bit slow... Isn't that part of the point with Brunetti? I have read them all and love the depiction of life in Venice." There's nothing wrong with the depiction of Venician life. But half-way through the book I still don't know if there is a story yet. This is the first of Leon's books that I'm reading. Watched several Brunetti movies, though, which made me expect more from the books. However, I like the characters of Brunetti and vice-questore Patta.

Not sure whether they have been dubbed or subtitled for English-speakers. Reportedly Donna Leon doesn't like them. The German actors are not acting Italian enough in her opinion. But they are definitely more captivating than this particular book. By the way, the actor playing Patta died recently.

It's very true that if you don't use it, you lose it.

"The Unnamed by Joshua Ferris" I've read most of his books but not this one. I was slightly disappointed by A Calling for Charlie Barnes, which was only partially successful as a reimagining of Death of a Salesman but absolutely love Then we came to the End and To Rise Again at a Decent Hour.

"I've 2 on the go ATM, Wolf Hall by Hillary Mantel and Contacts by Mark Watson" I absolutely loved Wolf Hall and Bring up the Bodies, but I bought the Mirror and the Light when we first went into lockdown and I couldn't get through it. I suspect it was the stress of everything going on reducing my attention span, and it's not really a book you can dip in and out of. Just the same, I've not yet gone back to it. It is still on my kindle, waiting patiently for me to return.

"I'm currently working my way through the Sharpe series by Bernard Cornwell, chronologically. However since my exodus from hell, I seem to have lost the next in the series. While I'm waiting for the book to arrive I'm reading Neptunes Inferno by James Hornfischer. It's about the naval action around the Guadalcanal campaign in 1942. Following the Sharpe series I intend to get the books that the Expanse is based on as I've heard some very good things about them." Gotta love Sharpe. Its the book series the TV show The Last Kingdom is based on, though the books are a million times better. Also try out The Warlord trilogy (The Winter King, Enemy of God and Excalibur) which is the best telling of the Arthur legend ever. Both the above by Bernard Cornwell. And yes, The Expanse books are epic. Nine in total (TV series only goes as far as book 6). The best sci-fi around.
