Chelmsford

Scientists have announced that on the last twenty years that the number of bugs splattered on your numberplate has dropped by 60%.

They are worried by the drop in bug numbers.

These science types are not very scientific. Hard to splat an insect when your car is stuck in traffic queues ..

What's going on here guys.. ?

Isn't this down to better crash detection systems in modern cars?

I'm going to look to see if more of us could get involved, to record our data. Obviously plates would need washing before starting to drive but that's limited effort, if done before any trip.

It's shocking how much of our wildlife we're knocking out, with each of them having links to the survival of others. It's really sad.

Again if we are going quote science Tom, you need to give more details. If I presented my work like you do I wouldn't have passed my A levels

Makes sense though, standardised size of plastic and amount of bugs on them. Insects are cool and important, pollination is kinda a big deal.

I wear a white coat. I’m not a scientist. I’m in an East 17 cover band.

Maybe they have been checking motorbike number plates, they only have them on the back and most don’t have a reverse gear…

'Tis bollocks ! I was out on my motorbike for about 6 hours last Saturday and had to stop and clean my visor about 6 times as I couldn't see where the heck I was going ! Worst I've known it !! Nobody I repeat nobody wants that many dead bugs on their helmet !

"maybe that there's so much traffic on the road , we are all stuck in traffic jams"

It's just possible that scientists, clever little sods that they are, could factor in speed and distance travelled, thereby ignoring any variation in time taken.

It is worrying, the tiniest creatures can have the biggest role to play (fnaar) in ecosystems.

I like that we're being encouraged not to cut our lawns so often and I'd recommend anyone to grab a pack of seed that are good for pollinators - and you'll get nice flowers

Bugs arn't throwing themselves at number plates. They are busy saving themselves to eat me alive later in the summer.

I do believe they're farmed. Not that that's any better for the bugs...
